Chapter 2: Hell's Back Road

#1 Post by Pulpatoon »

Operation: Unfathomable! Day Three: Morning
A summary of events so far can be found here.

The party awakes the next morning to find that, in the night, everyone has ended up cuddled up against the warm, furry bulk of Dr. Ephram Thontorius. There is something comforting on a deep mammalian level about his gently snoring presence that acts as a powerful soporific, and, judging by the cool ashes from last night's dinner, the party has overslept.

Everyone is at full Hit Points, and all the PCs are leveled up! That was a very restful night's sleep!

As the party groggily starts gathering up camp, they notice that Cedric, who had the last watch, is missing. His backpack is still there, as, oddly enough, are his boots. But the man himself, including all items he was wearing on his person, are gone. There are no obvious signs of struggle or anything else out of the ordinary.

Cedric's Possessions:
Shield
Battle Axe of Cleaving +1 (takes 2 item slots)
Backpack containing:
Rations [1]
Tinderbox
Chain 10'
Drill
100 gp
Scroll of Membranous Inconvenience
Scroll of Charm Monster
Sergeant Oothu makes a point of whispering to each of you, "We must not listen to the bear's balderdash! Our mission is to return the Nul-Rod. We cannot let this creature destroy it. For all we know, he ate Cedric!" He clasps Bubba's arm. "You're with me, right?"

The Underworld looks unchanged. You are in a rough tunnel, sloping gently down to the east, lit by blue-green fungus that grows in ragged patches across the walls and ceiling. There is a small passage that continues east, while the main tunnel bends to the north.

Next update: Monday Wednesday Evening, EST!

Please double check your character record against the spreadsheet, and confirm that everything looks right. Please note that I subtracted 1 ration from everybody for last night's dinner. Galot doesn't have rations, so I took one from Gurzubar. If that arrangement doesn't suit, let me know.

Also, please note that a Wand of Magic Missiles is lying nearby.

Ollan whispers to Bubba, If that friendly bear is right, we need to get that null-rod from this madman. But Oothu's got a point and if this bear's purposes are nefarious then we are doomed regardless with these tattoos. We should be prepared to take him out....

Operation: Unfathomable! Day Three: Morning
Ollan and Gurzubar dig through Cedric's possessions, supplementing their own supplies while the rest of the party packs up.

Thontorius: "Honestly, I've been blundering around a bit blindly, down here. Do you folks have your bearings? Do you know where to head to find either Professor Gormonite, or the Nul-Rod?"

Krodok: "We go north, now. Find pretty grey-skins, yes?"

Oothu: "No, the beast is right. We should pursue the Nul-Rod." Giving the rest of the party a significant look, he adds, "We must remember our duty."

Dice: From the west, the party hears the flapping of wings, and sees the same flying worm creatures that had briefly appeared right before they had decided to enter this present passage.

There are eight of the creatures. They spot you and your camp. They big, glassy eyes flash red—a startling color of light to see after three days of the blue-green glow of the Underworld—and fly in tight loops, revering direction and heading South.

"What a curious life-form," says Thontorius, just in time to be interrupted by a wet-sounding battle cheer from the west. The eight flyers return, accompanied by thirteen worm-warriors, shaking with eager blood-lust!

Anurak

"Oh dear!" Anurak squeaks, looking around desperately.

He sees the Wand of Magic Missile laying where he left it and makes a dive towards it. Scrambling to grab it, he plans to weild it with some flourish.

"Back you fiends," he tells them. ZAP. ZAP. ZAPITY ZAP ZAP.

Operation: Unfathomable! Day Three: Morning
The party is shocked into inaction by the onrush of worm soldiers!

"Death in the name of Shaggath-Ka!" shout the soldiers in rubbery, slavering voices, thick with bloodlust.

First, the winged worms fly in, flapping and buffeting the party. Several surround Ollan, slapping him with their leathery, membranous wings, knocking him to the ground. Four more of the flying worms stay aloft at a higher altitude, and emit brilliant flashes of light from their eyes! Gurzubar and Oothu are blinded!

Then the soldiers' charge reaches the party. The rush in, but in their frenzy, they can barely lay their spears upon the party. Despite their greater numbers, they only manage to scratch Anurak, and give the Oothu a painfully solid jab. Oothu, swinging wildly, manages to hit a worm soldier with his own spear.

Krodok emits a fearsome cry, and brings his great stone spear down on a worm soldier, only for it to wiggle out of the way, unharmed.

"Lumbricus monstrous!" shouts Thotorius, pulling his small pistol from inside his jacket. The pistol's green light disintegrates a worm soldier!

Ollan, dismayed by the overwhelming flies, clinches his fist: I thought we had a connection....

Initiative: [1d6] = 6

He scuttles across the floor as best as he is able, trying to get out from under the flies, and gets himself back to his feet, drawing his sword.

Can he attack? If so, here's the roll: Sword Attack & Damage: [1d20+4] = 15+4 = 19 --> [1d8] = 8

In this case, since the flying worms are coming at you from above, I'll say that Ollan can attack normally, but will be disadvantaged to defend, and, if he were to attack one of the standing worm soldiers, that attack would be disadvantaged, too.

Anurak

Anurak gives the Wand of Magic Missile a vigorous shake. He could have sworn the operating instructions had read '2 magic missiles per charge'. Perhaps he wasn't using it properly. He tries purposefully twirling the tip of the wand in mid air and then flicking it towards two of the worm warriors while picturing them exploding spectacularly. "Stupefy! MORTIFERUS DISPLODO!" he yells excitedly, bobbing and weaving to avoid further injury.

ooc: Remind me, do each of us need to roll for initiative? If so, mine is : Initiative: [1d6] = 5

If blind Gurzubar feels he can swing his axe without hitting his companions he will. If he doesn't, then he will blindly look upwards and shoot his lazer eyes.

Either of Gurzubar's attacks will be Disadvantaged, so roll twice and keep the worst. If you fumble on either roll for the melee attack, you'll hit a comrade. If you fumble on both rolls with the ranged attack, you'll hit a comrade.

Operation: Unfathomable: Day 3: Morning
Ollan scuttles across the floor and away from the flapping wings of the worms. Sliding upright, he neatly pierces one of the creatures as it attempts to swoop upon him.

Anurak gives the Wand of Magic Missile a vigorous shake. "Stupefy! MORTIFERUS DISPLODO!" he yells excitedly, bobbing and weaving to avoid further injury. The wand fizzes and sparks, and emits three erratic beams of magical energy which zag crazily through the cavern, striking three of the worm warriors! The worms are staggered, but do not fall.

Galot bats down a flying worm with his sword, killing it, and Bubba kills another with an arrow.

Blinded Gurzubar, unsure where to strike with his weapon, faces the sound of flapping wings and releases a crimson optic blast upwards. He destroys another flying worm.

Oothu barks in frustration as he swings his spear around, unable to connect with an enemy. Krodok, however, grins with bloody relish as his heavy stone spear knicks a worm warrior.

Dr. Thontorius aims his devastating little pistol and evaporates another worm warrior in a burst of gamma rays.

The four remaining flying worms regroup after having been scattered by Gurzubar's unexpected eyebeam. Keeping their distance from the party, they each flash their blinding eyes. However, the party members successfully avert their eyes in time.

"WE ARE THE MAW OF THE WORM SULTAN! FEED YOUR BODIES TO THE GLORY OF SHAGGATH-KA!" scream the ten standing worm warriors as they renew their attacks. They particularly clump around Galot and Ollan, although, in their frenzy, they seem to get in each other's way as much as anything. However, Ollan and Bubba both take a few unpleasant jabs from their spears.

AND! THEN! SUDDENLY! The cavern is full of the segmented, ethereal body of some vast worm. Its gelatinous body fills the cavern, including where you stand, passing around and through your body like a current, filling your mouth with the taste of copper and mineral earth. You see its ghostly, annelid organs pulsing and churning all around you—it seems you have an interior view of a giant worm in the act of trying to force something out of its throat. With a thick, mucusy retch, the worm dispels the offending object, which proves to be sinewy, hawk-faced human completely covered in the mother-of-pearl secretions of pan-dimesnional dispesia. The man looks shocked beyond comprehension by his sudden state of affairs.

As suddenly as it appeared, the worm fades/undulates away, burrowing through the dark humus of realities.

The worm warriors are no less shocked than the disgorged man, seemingly caught between the urge to worship him as a worm-prophet and murder him as a blasphemer.

Hey, everybody! It's Doctor Gori!

With a quick look around, he decide that the group with the ragtag team must be the good guys. Bad always always look alike, so he shoot from his crossbow directly to the enemy, with weird noises of *pew!*pew! coming out of his mouth

Anurak

"Jeepers!" squeaks Anurak a little queasily, as the ethereal monstrosity passes. "What in the Eleven Kingdoms was that!!"

He pauses momentarily, debating whether to blast the disgorged arrival with his wand but quickly decides not to when the shocked-looking man starts pew-pewing the worm warriors with his crossbow.

"What he said!" Anurak shouts enthusiastically, flourishing the wand for another salvo. Magic Missiles: [1d4+1] = 4+1 = 5, [1d4+1] = 1+1 = 2

Continuing to bob and weave while peeking out from behind his shield, Anurak is ready at a moment's notice to duck back and protect his eyes from the flashing of the flying worms. "I can assure you, we have no intention of being fed to your spineless Worm Sultan!!" he declares, feeling both heroic and pleased with his own rapier wit.

And then, he suddenly recalls a Worm Charming Festival he once catered for, and begins to incorporate a curious and erratic foot-tapping into his movements. "Ollan, do you tap dance? Tap your feet everyone," he shouts. "The vibrations! It will confuse them!"

ooc: When I stumbled across Worm Charming, I couldn't resist incorporating it into my response! :D
