Qelgrax Klilxuac

The sorcerer moves so he is 10' due North of the armored male. It is...distinctive. I can honestly say I have never seen its like before. Please, can you tell us more about the fruit it bears? The goblins were short on details.

The Gulthias Tree
Sky studies the two flanking youngsters and believes they're the Hucrele children they're seeking; or, at least one of them, the daughter. The other, wearing heavy armor, she suspects is likely Sir Braford, who led the twins and their friend into this Sunless Citadel in the first place.

"So, is this the tree that produces the apple the goblins were selling then?" Kelben asks; the question draws a broad smile across Belak's face. "Indeed it is," he says proudly. Klilxuac follows the line of questioning. "Please, can you tell us more about the fruit it bears? The goblins were short on details." At the mention of the goblins, the bearded man shakes his head.
“I give fruit to the goblins with orders to disperse their seeds on the surface -- deceitful beings that they are, the goblins always seem to barter the fruit, but the seeds are dispersed all the same..."

"...my plan for colonizing the surface with the children of Gulthias continues.”
he finishes; his tone becoming less calm, and more sinister.

"Have you seen some kids with a knighly fellow come this way?" Kelben follows. "You mean them?" he asks, confirming Sky's suspicions by indicating the younger male and female flanking him. “They're supplicants now," he says. "The Gulthias Tree has accepted them, and they are mine to control, just like the twig blights."

"You can’t save them,”
he adds, sensing your motives.

The younger, armored male takes a few protective steps to stand before Belak, while the young female moves up alongside her robed owner.

Their movement is slight, but you notice the twig blights, behind the tree, begin to slowly creep forward.

Kelben scratches his head "What do the apple's seeds turn into those twig things or wouldn't they grow more trees like that one?" he says pointing at the grand evil tree. All the while thinking so the kids are his slaves now that can't be good. "So if thats the kids then are you the knightly fellow that brought them here from the town?" the gnome adds sounds more curious and confused intentionally.

Sky

How tall is the tree? Actually, how large is the overall chamber? The walls are 20 feet tall, is the tree larger?

Sky's fur is standing on end, not happy with the situation. She suspects talk is useless here which is very unnerving for her.

Sky moves south and east behind the large wall. She tries to do so sneaky like. Stealth:[1d20+5] = 9+5 = 14

Her main goal is to spread out a bit. Her secondary goal is to climb that tree. :D

What do you mean, we "can't save them?" Why do they need saving? Their mother wishes them to come home. To the others, he raises his voice a bit, saying, Talgen, Sharwyn, would you like to go back home? Your mother misses you very much.
Persuasion: [1d20+3] = 7+3 = 10
Persuasion: [1d20+3] = 5+3 = 8
With advantage, not that either was very good.

The Gulthias Tree
Sky creeps south and east and ends up behind what would have been the eastern wall of the sunken structure. The tabaxi stares through a gap in the wall and focuses on the Gulthias Tree. The gargantuan plant easily matches the 20-foot height of the pieces and sections of wall, which is half the height of the ceiling, which is estimated to be roughly 40-feet above you.

The cavern itself is massive. Looking back, Sky can make out the rough, grooved outer wall to the east, which is maybe 30-feet behind her. The outer wall to the west is beyond the 60-foot range of her infravision. Even the sections of the western wall of the sunken structure she's hiding behind aren't in the range of her current view.

As the tabaxi performs her investigation of their surroundings, Kelben and Klilxuac continue to dialogue with Belak.

"What, do the apple's seeds turn into those twig things? Or wouldn't they grow more trees like that one?" Kelben asks, pointing at the grand evil tree, all while trying to buy time for the minds of the collective group to race to put all the pieces together; at least as far as the kids are concerned:
  • The twins -- Sharwyn and Talgen -- came down with Sir Braford and friend, Karakas.
  • Durnn, the hobgoblin leader, admitted to killing Talgen after the younger man insulted him.
  • Talgen's body was burnt.
    • Talgen wore a family ring; it's likely Durnn had it, a goblin has it, or it's mixed in with the ashes where the body was incinerated.
  • Durnn also shared that "Only the girl and the shiny man go down to the grove," suggesting that the friend either didn't accompany the others down, or was possibly killed earlier?
The above suggests that it is, in fact, Sharwyn and Sir Braford that currently accompany Belak... or, based on the fact their
skin is rough, gray, and bark-like, what's left of them.

"The fruit from the majestic Gulthias Tree do bear seeds -- at least one, but I've seen as many as four. But, alas, these seeds do not produce another tree, for it is one of a kind. Instead, they produce the leafless woody shrubs which, after one year, animate as twig blights, like these here," he says, indicating those continuing to creep up from behind the tree.

"What do you mean, we 'can't save them?'," Klilxuac asks, switching subjects back to the matter of the kids. "Why do they need saving?" The dragonborn stares at the pair, and something is definitely not right about them. "Sharwyn, your mother would you like to go back home. She misses you very much." The young "woman" huddles closer to Belak, and snarls. "Your friends are no longer," Belak responds. "They've been elevated!"

"See, once a subject has been bound to the bole of the Gulthias Tree, over the next 24 hours, they are completely absorbed by, and into the tree.
There, they become its thrall, and once they've reached this elevated state -- as your friends here have -- the tree expels them, a process which takes roughly an hour..."

"Then, they are this,"
he says proudly, indicating Sharwyn and Sir Braford in their new, corrupted and obedient state. "I could suggest you could be next -- but only two of you, as there can only be four thralls."

Any takers?"

The twig blights, Sharwyn, and Belak form a bit of a semi-circle around the front of the tree, with only Sir Braford standing in front.

Hargrem

Sensing that the time of dialogue is coming to an end, Hargrem said a quick prayer to Tymora. In his gut, he knew that Belak was part of the problem, but he was not the source of the problem. The tree.. this Gulthias tree seemed to have a hunger all of its own. If it was turning innocent people into tree like thralls, it must be stopped, and for good. He turned to the dragonborn and quietly spoke as he walked by him. "Prepare your fire."

He started his incantation in preparing for his holy sacred flame upon the tree itself.

Kelben mutters more or less to himself "This sure will be tough to explain to their mother." referring to the kids. The gnome sighs and takes up his bow sensing the time for fighting again has arrived. Not entirely knowing what a thrall is other than obviously nothing good the gnome targets the nearest twig blight and fires an arrow. "I'll pass on being a thrall thank you." he says loud enough to be heard as his arrow misses the target and makes him feel a bit less heroic in the moment.

Initiative [1d20+2] = 16+2 = 18
Short Bow [1d20+4] = 4+4 = 8 to hit; [1d6+2] = 1+2 = 3 damage

Sky

Sky hears Kelben quip and spots the arrow. "Boring conversation anyway." Sky moves to the south, around the corner of the wall and starting singing once more. "Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-ra-li"
Inititative: [1d20+4] = 11+4 = 15
Sky casts sleep as a second level spell, centered on Sharwyn.

Qelgrax Klilxuac

Getting confirmation that they will be unable to rescue the children, the sorcerer goes into attack mode. Stepping next to Sir Braford, Klilxuac reminds everyone of his heritage, belching fire at the assembled group.
If he moves one square south, can he get Braford, Belak, green tree blight, and Sharwyn in the 15' cone?

  • 12: Belak
  • 10: Klilxuac
  • 9: Sharwyn
  • 8: Hargrem
  • 7: Sir Braford
  • 6: Twig Blights
Round 1
"This sure will be tough to explain to their mother," Kelben mutters to himself once the realization that her kids are lost -- one to death, at the hands of a hobgoblin bully; the other suffering perhaps an even worse fate...

Upon realizing the time for talk has passed, the gnome quickly draws his bow and, in his haste, sends a arrow whizzing past the nearest stick figure's head. "I'll pass on being a thrall, thank you." he says loudly.

"Boring conversation anyway," Sky quips as she fetches her lute while moving to the southern corner of the eastern wall she's hiding behind. The bard targets Sharwyn and begins singing once more: "Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-ra-li" Suddenly, affected by the melodious lullaby, all three twig blights and Sharwyn herself topple to the ground and fall into a deep slumber.

The group watches as Belak reaches into a pouch and produces a handful of oak bark. The middle-aged, bearded male throws back the hood of his robe and quietly chants a few repeated words and taps his staff on the ground -- an instant later, his skin begins to darken into a dark brown color and take on a rough, bark-like appearance.

Klilxuac goes into attack mode. The sorcerer steps next to Sir Braford and reminds everyone of his heritage, belching fire at the assembled group -- capturing Sir Braford, Belak, and one of the twig blights in the blast of flame! Both non-wooden targets seem to anticipate the dragonborn's intentions and manage to avoid most of the flame damage, but still howl in pain as they're even partially engulfed in flames. The blight erupts into flame that is reduced to cinder after it combusts.

Sharwyn sleeps.

"Save some of that fire for the tree," Hargrem says to Klilxuac, then, after saying a quick prayer to Tymora, casts Sacred Flame, sending a flame-like radiance down upon the Gulthias Tree. Its twisted, evil branches sway.

The escape route Sir Braford takes to at least partially avoid Klilxuac's breath weapon has him stepping forward, ending alongside the the flame-breathing dragonborn. The heavily armored warrior raises a long sword above his head and brings it down against the sorcerer with two hands... sparks fly as the tip of the sword clanks against the floor, narrowly missing its intended target.

With the battle now in full swing, Hargrem moved closer to the armored night threatening Klilxuac. However, his target continues to be the tree itself. He cast his radiant fire down upon its branches hoping to let it burn under Tymora's blessing.

  • 12: Belak
  • 10: Klilxuac
  • 9: Sharwyn
  • 8: Hargrem
  • 7: Sir Braford
  • 6: Twig Blights
Round 2
"Wonder what happens if we try to burn tree?" Kelben wonders aloud as he pulls back his bowstring and sinks an arrow through the breastplate in Sir Braford's armor, eliciting a pained scream from the armored man-tree.

"Momma always told me not to climb trees on fire." Sky says as she handles a flask of alchemist's fire and heaves it towards the Gulthias Tree. The toss is slightly short, but does manage to coat some branches with the sticky substance, igniting it in a slow burn.

Movement.

From the top branches, just above where Sky set the fire, a giant frog with white skin leaps to the ground, and proceeds to bound towards Sky, snapping its powerful jaws in the the bard's direction, but the tabaxi is able to dart out of the frogs bite attempt.

"You fools," Belak says, again assuming the calm tone he first greeted you with. "Things would have been so much easier if you just listened..." With that, you watch as he produces a wooden wand hidden in the sleeve of his robes. "Tangle," he utters, pointing his wand at an area just behind Hargrem. Almost immediately, the entire area surrounding Klilxuac, Kelben, and Hargrem erupts into a maze of grasping weeds and vines which sprout from the ground and begin to entangle those in its area of effect.

Klilxuac, battling the twisting vines beginning to take root around his ankles, launches a pair of purple bolts of energy at each of Sir Braford and Belak.

Sharwyn continues her peaceful slumber.

Hargrem, fighting the weeds as they begin to take root around his ankles, remains stationary and launches Sacred Flame spell on the tree.

Okay, Sir Braford still gets to attack, but the outcome of Klilxuac's saving throw against the Entangle will determine whether his attack will be normal, or made with advantage.

I will wait to make his round 2 attack until Scott submits his saving throw.

---

I will need a Strength saving throw (DC 12) from Klilxuac, Kelben, and Hargrem. Failure means being restrained by the entangling plants.

Please declare any actions/movement for round 3.

Kelben appears to be stuck. Even though he is stuck he still takes a shot with his bow this time at Belak.

Ability/Skill/Stat Check Rolls [1d20] = 8
modifier of 0 doesn't help

Short Bow [1d20+4] = 8+4 = 12 to hit; [1d6+2] = 5+2 = 7 damage
Advantage/Disadvantage [1d20] = 5

I may have to do some corrections please let me know if i do Dave.

I probably should have added this detail in my response:
  • If you succeed on your Strength check, you personally are unaffected by the effect. The area, however, is considered difficult terrain, essentially halving your speed.
  • If you fail your Strength check, you become entangled which causes you to add the 'Restrained' condition, which essentially does the following:
    • Your speed becomes 0
    • Your attacks have disadvantage
    • attacks against you have advantage
    • You have disadvantage on Dexterity saving throws

If you do become restrained, you can use your action to attempt to break free -- same Strength saving throw (DC 12).

So, Kelben, because you failed your saving throw, the roots take hold and entangle you. You can't move (speed = 0), and while you're free to keep using your bow, your attacks will be made with disadvantage (I see you added a second roll, which is perfect). Plus, any attacks against you will have advantage.

You guys had a great 1st round (Sky's Sleep spell was very effective), but this is still very much a battle.

Hargem

The cleric remained steadfast on his attempt to burn down the offending tree. From out of the ground, a series of brambles sprouted and attempted to secure Hargrem and his nearby companions. They wrapped around his legs and froze him in place. There was little he could do, except to focus his divine energy down upon the tree. Again, he called forth his holy flame among the tree.
