oh the times when a bit of ventriloquism or audible glamour can help a mere performer...

Idriss has to think quick. He doesn't recognize these creatures but from the sight of them they have at least no sight of him. Hearing and smell perhaps primary senses and hopefully not a ghoulish touch. He cannot distract them as he has no further spells left to create a sound so he will do thus.

Taking the rolled up contents of a pouch from his belt Idriss he will make Wilbur grip part of it in his teeth and send him to run through the nest room, under the tables and out up the stairs. He is running with a fish head and tail, the portion taken from the river earlier. Dragging the scaly fish scent behind him across the floor Wilbur runs off with a plea, "Go Wilbur, save us and yourself, lead them sniffer ghouls up the stairs to those zombies and sneak back when you can.".

Idriss prays again that the ruse works.

Following this the lantern light gets dimmed right down to a candle flame. He is tempted to continue down the hallway but afraid footsteps may give him so stands motionless a few steps away from the door so the sniffers can't sniff his sweaty odour underneath the door frame.

With quick thinking, you grab-up a fish head and point Wilbur at the stairway door before closing your own door behind you. You stand, breathless, and listen, knowing Wilbur is risking his life on your gambit.

At first, you hear nothing but the sound of your own labored breathing, struggling to get it under control. Eventually, after a number of minutes, you manage to calm yourself back under control. You try to listen again. You hear the squeak of rats from the room you exited from, but hear shuffling still beyond the second door, which you presume to be the Mask Room. Finally, you hear a door shut, and then (waiting for good measure) several minutes of silence from the Mask Room.

Abruptly, you hear the squeal of several rats and then the distinct hiss of a weasel hunting behind the door you came through. The cries of the rats are numerous and aggressive.

Idriss Doorkeeper

Idriss has few resources but thankfully 10 flasks of oil. He will ready a fresh torch to light and pour one flask of oil out so that it spreads under the door to the nest room with the rats in. After it is poured he will open they door but a few inches and whistle softly for Wilbur to come through.

Idriss hopes Wilbur comes through the door without being chased by either rats or sniffer ghouls. Should any of those follow he will strike the torch and light the oil to be a flame barrier to dissuade them chasing us and Foxy.

I would have a mind to use that entrance room if it were clear of threat and I could secure the doors, but if not Idriss will move further down the hallway away from the mask room door.

Idriss uncorks a flask of oil, carefully pouring it as a trap at the door threshold. He hears the squeals of triumph as the rats attack and the hiss of Wilbur followed by a yelp of pain.

He opens the door and sees a mass of normal sized rats, a horde of them with almost two dozen furry bodies. They see him as well, immediately pivoting and charging towards Idriss' door. As they surge across the floor, he sees Wilbur's broken body lying bloody and twisted on the flagstones with the bodies of two dead rats. Idriss rushes to light the oil before the rats reach him, igniting it just as they begin pressing through the door. Two of the furry bodies squeal as they go up into flame, dividing the horde. Five of the little furry parasites dive at Idriss' legs, biting at him fiercely, their sharp little teeth drawing rivulets of blood as they nip his vulnerable limbs. -3hp Fourteen more crouched and hissing on the other side of the flames, but not fleeing away.

Both hit, 7 damage, Wilbur has 3hp. He's dead.

Idriss seeing Wilbur dead, could he have not just shut the door? His intention was to open it but a few inches

Shuts the door and throws the second flask of oill into the flames and takes off down the hallway with floating Foxy, determined not to have her served up on a plate.

He has the remains of the fish portions in a waist pouch he will drop and push Foxy's satchel off the disc as we run/float, I think it has food in also. Down the hallway, in hand, hopefully putting some distance between us and the rats. First door on the left?

-2 flasks of oil, -1 torch, -Foxy satchel, - fish portions all marked from inventory.

Your stated action was to light the oil if they chased. They were swarming Wilbur while you spent a round pouring oil and you couldn't see his body until they did chase. You didn't win initiative, which is what determined if you lit it first. BUT, I forgot your Dex bonus, which makes the difference - all rats are on the other side of the fire and I will redact the damage.

You throw another flask of oil, which splatters over the writhing swarm of furry bodies and ignites from the wall of flame. Four of the rats emit high pitched screams as they are lit, running pell-mell among their fellows as they are consumed. The swarm breaks and scatters chaotically as they do so.

You run before the fire can abate, quickly escaping the scene down the doorless hallway until you reach an archway without a door which leads into another chamber.

You enter through the archway at the corner of a 30' by 30' spartan chamber which extends to the left and forward from you. There are two doors - one on the left wall adjacent to the corner closest to where you stand, the other on the far wall adjacent to the wall on your right. The far corner - forward and to the left, between the two doors, is a spartan barracks. It has three plain-wood bunks, the blankets and matressing long-ago shredded into mess by vermin and scattered around the room. A simple wood table with four chairs sits in the open area while an axe caked with dried blood lies before a fireplace. Two wooden chests rest next to the bunks and some items are on an inset shelf on the wall. A goblin-sized skeleton is curled up on one of the bunks, still dressed in dried, cracked leathers with a shortsword on its belt and wearing a golden necklace.

You can choose if you still throw any fish, but not Foxy's satchel, which you'd need to detangle from her first.

If he can release the oil and escape he will do so, no further delays. He is basically running to the first 'safe chamber' if anywhere can be declared safe here.

Is this archway on the right or left hand if the hallway and how far down, I am making a map for references.

Well, let's make the best use of this room. Idriss will command the floating disc to carefully place Foxy in a bunk, once he has placed his cloak down over some rescued stuffing for a mattress. I guess this will be the last action of the Floating Disc and it should dissipate soon. 3 sperate beds or one triple bunk? Place Foxy in topmost most out of sight of smaller creatures.

Idriss has no interest in disturbing anything...well just yet anyway. Check out the fireplace, if any warm embers indicate room usage. If none Idriss will place the torch in it to give some flickering light, unless a wall sconce exists.

Three separate beds. You get Foxy into one as your spell ends. There is no sign of activity in the room for a long time, but the fireplace has a chimney and flue of sorts that would allow you to make a fire safely to warm the cold room for Foxy's recovery. The hallway ends at the archway, it isn't to the side. You didn't have time to pace the hallway as you fled. You can go back to measure it (and close the door) once the oil fire is out if you wish. There are wall sconces, so you place the torch in one and set your lantern on the table.

You return and gently close the door, the rats seeming to have scattered, poor Wilbur's body left behind with the two rats who's lives he claimed valiantly in his last moments. You pace back the hallway - it is roughly 80' long, with that door on the side at the one end and the other end terminating in the archway to where you now rest.

A glass jar full of human teeth rests on a shelf inset on the wall. A handful of quartz crystals are scattered on the table. You are careful not to touch any of them. The goblin skeleton seems to grim mockingly from its own bunk to where Foxy now lays, her breath ragged, inches from death. You lay her on the makeshift bed and do your best to make her comfortable (blanket, bedroll, fireplace?) so she can begin to recover... gods willing.

You settle in, hoping for Foxy to wake before anything worse happens and also knowing that you need rest before you can again tax your mind with the rigors of spell use. You nod off, knowing you have few other options.

After three hours or so, you are woken by the sound of scrabbling in the room beyond the door (left from where you entered), waiting with baited breath. The door never opens and eventually the scrabbling subsides. You drift off once more. You awaken, finally feeling refreshed, and know that eight hours passed. You lie in the dark and consider your options.

Your lantern and torch are long out; you can use another oil flask to light the lantern or you can stoke up the fireplace if you lit it, but you'll need light to memorize your spells.

Will use the goblin short sword to poke the fireplace embers and hearth. He will light it, a small fire not a raging thing, enough to give light and warmth into the room.

A few precautions to guard 'the Alamo'. Idriss will line up a few flasks of oil incase he needs to throw them, the three from Foxy. Take a little draft of her whisky for medicinal purposes of course and breakfast on the remaining fish. You mentioned a few tattered blankets on the floor, hopefully not too mouldy or flea ridden. Idriss will use them to keep warm as a blanket, he has a bedroll (Foxy can use) and yoga mat in his backpack which he carried not on the horse. ( His pack is quite light, just oil and food and basics,). Remove axe and put it under Foxy's bunk. ( Checking for traps and wires or spring loaded darts etc this is still goblin central and would hate complacency to ruin us now.) After learning new spells he will open chest number one, ( from a distance using upturned table as a makeshift shield and broken chair leg or slat from bunk to prise it up.

Setting the fire to get warmth and light, Idriss prepares the room for better comfort and defense. Foxy seems to rest more easily. You spells memorized, you open the first chest. Within you find a leather sling and two goblin-made iron shortswords. The second chest contains a small box of resin-based incense sticks and a third iron shortsword.

Five more hours pass as you inspect and prepare your room, waiting for Foxy to awake. Your attention begins to drift as the monotony continues, until you are startled by a voice in Common, a nasally, small voice which caught you by surprise, coming from the hallway. "Hands up, human! No weapons or your lives are ours!" You see two goblin bowmen with their arrows trained on you, a few more shuffling in the hallway behind them.

no other doors off the hallway, Idriss assumes then they came from the other side of the entrance hallway from the stairs.

"Oh brothers, please come in, though not all of you, I don't want to waken our prize asset just yet."

Idriss will look up from the table and seeing the shadowy figures wave at a couple to come forward.

"Armed oh no! but dangerous yes, but not to you. I am just a humble servant of...of... Idriss tries to remember the report of the raid written by the guards and uses the name of the old king who fled from here. If no name is recalled he uses the name if the priest who Foxy fought with to get entrance to the goblin fortress, goblin cleric Dmukas. As a friendly action he takes the jar of teeth, emptying it in the fire and pours some whisky out offering it to the first goblin who enters.

Idriss speaks fluent goblin.

caution better than valour here, he did think flipping the table and magic missile one but I don't think it is a fight he can win yet.

Evoking Foxy's nom de guerre evokes no response from the goblins. The lead goblin seems emboldened by your words, switching from Common to Goblin in response to your recognition of their tongue. "A smooth criminal... I see... then clearly, you understand a robbery." He tosses a large sack on the floor. "Keep your hands where we can see them and put your treasures in the bag." The other two goblins grin, pulling back their bows and looking down the arrow shafts at you to emphasize his point.

"Treasures, oh my friends, my most precious treasure was eaten by the rats. A few coins us all I have hence trying a life of roguery and ransom. A man must eat must he not? Are you guys hungry, I saw some nice lamb joints hanging up, shame if they are just gobbled by the other guys. Perhaps if one if you sneak up and get a joint I could put it in the hearth and roast it for tonight?"

Idriss will throw the contents of his purse into the sack and push the whisky flask to the bowmen to squabble over and point to the hearth as if making a spit to roast on.

"Do you prefer southern spicy or ogre chilli flavours".
