I don't want this to seem completely railroadish right off the bat, but most of this game happens along the path to Bag End. There is nothing to do out in the empty fields and the Shire doesn't house very many wandering monsters.
And, of course, it's our duty as players to head immediately into the part of the map you didn't plan for!
I hope that didn't sound too pushy. It was really just meant to entice some action and possibly a small attempt at humor.
