Act V Search for the Skyfish

#1 Post by OGRE MAGE »

After a long day of resting and playing with their newly found toys, the party wakes to the new day, ready to continue on with their quest.

The groups thieves take the liberty of scouting ahead in the central tunnel and they find that after about half the distance through the mountain, the tunnel is blocked by a thick, clear wall of ice. They can see a huge cavern on the other side of the ice but have no way of getting any further until the ice wall is dealt with.

The pair return to the group with their findings so they can discuss possible solutions.

Blodget, halfling thief:

The foolish young hobbit has no ideas on how to get past the ice wall.

He looks to the mighty champions for answers. Maybe one will melt it with a ball of fire?! Maybe one will shatter it with a bolt of lightning?! He couldn't wait to see; excited with anticipation, even as he felt badly that he had no good ideas of his own.

Thomas looks over the ice wall, hefting his hammer. If no one wants to use a spell to blast or melt the ice then he has no problem using his hammer and strength to carve out an opening.

Halo wakens and lays hands on himself before getting ready to explore, saying a prayer and blessing the companions at the sign of Pelor's light.

Looking at the ice wall the small chevalier will mull over their predicament.

Is the ice wall holding up the ceiling do you think? Can we make a tunnel through it? Anyone have a flame tongue sword?"

Mira taps the ice with her staff lightly. I could perhaps get around it, but I don't see that would do any good. Under the night sky I would have no problem melting this barrier, but inside this cave my powers are limited.

Trotter says, I've no good solution to defeating ice. Ice giants, yes. Ice blocks, not so much.

To build a fire, perhaps?

"We have some wards against cold so breaking through shouldn't unduly hurt us," says Halo once his healing is done.

He will test the ice barrier by hacking his sunblade at it.

Ice Wall

The three remaining dwarves wish you all well and thank you again for helping them rid their cave of the nasty giants. They eat a small meal with you and then watch as the party disappears down the central tunnel.

The tiny paladin lays his hands upon him self, in the purest of ways of course. healed 14 points

Xano suggests employing more help from the dwarves but then realizes that they weren't actually mining down this tunnel. This is simply the passage through to the other side and there is no evidence of veins in the rock containing precious metals. She takes a closer look through the ice wall and can see that the huge cavern beyond is also filled with ice and there are massive stalactites of ice that hang from the tall ceiling.

Trotter suggests the most simplistic of solutions in lighting a fire to melt the ice while Thomas thinks of simply smashing a hole through it. Then he sees Halo begin to do just that.

The sunblade whacks hard into the ice, taking out a large chunk of the frozen wall. The blade is bright but, does not give off heat like a flaming sword so, Halo gets the impression that it might be possible for them cut a hole through the ice, but it might take some doing.

Thomas smiles and waits for his turn to smash the ice.

Smashing/slashing the ice is certainly feasible, although it will be loud and take a bit of time to get all the way through. you estimate at least a turn judging by the walls thickness.

Will you continue your hacking?

Do we really want to chop at this, possibly alerting whatever lurks beyond to our presence? This does not bode well with my teachings of stealth. Mira's lovely features contort for a moment, and she covers her face with one hand, suggesting she realizes she has overlooked something. What am I thinking? Of course I could melt at least some of this ice. If you please, my friends, allow me some room.

The Apparitionist approaches the ice barrier to about 2 meters, and produces a small red gem. She twiddles her fingers above the stone and whispers a few arcane words and closes her hand around it. When she again opens her fingers, a grapefruit-sized glowing, translucent, ruby-colored sphere appears with a puff. Her eyes affix on the spot Halo hacked away, and she pitches the globe at the weakened spot.

Chromatic Orb, Heat application.

Wyntar Thomas and Morgi, I think it would be wise to cast some healing on the party members that still need it, so we are at our strongest before we encounter any new enemies....we don't know what will be waiting for us on the other side of this ice wall!!

Morgi watches Mira with interest. He has an idea too, but waits to see the effect she has on the ice wall.

"I would prefer to retain some healing spells in case someone goes down, to keep them from death."

Morgi examines the wall with interest, trying to determine if it is natural or of magical origin.

Halo will move out of the chamber once the witch begins her fire magic, unconvinced the whole chamber won't collapse as no one in the know has checked it out.

Ice Wall

The white wizard humbly asks for some healing for the remaining injured members of the party. His suggestion is quickly dismissed by the druid, who has ideas of his own if Mira should fail at melting the wall. He can easily tell that this ice structure is a natural occurrence and not made by some wizards magics.

Mira face palms herself when she remembers that she has the perfect spell already picked out for this very instance. She pulls out a small ruby from her components pouch and begins reciting an incantation over it.

Halo backs away, doubting that the structure is sound enough to melt, even though he himself just whacked at it with his sword.

Mira tosses the red orb of light at the base of the ice wall. (I won't make you roll to hit a wall) Suddenly, the orb begins to glow with intense heat, melting a round hole in the ice wall about 4 feet across before it fades away as quickly as it appeared.

There is a great rush of frigid air that shoots past you through the newly melted hole that now leads through the ice wall and into the huge cavern beyond. This may indicate that beyond this wall, there are other openings that lead to the outside air.

Blodget, halfling thief:

Blodget scurries forward, pulls up the hood of his magic cloak, and hops in after Xano; in order to help, yes, but also to make sure she doesn't pocket any shiny treasure she finds!
"There's just no honour among thieves anymore!" the thief thinks.
