XII. Flooded Quarry

#1 Post by dmw71 »

The group recalls that the Baroness is aware of a local tribe of kobolds living near the flooded quarry just east of town which has evidently become problematic. Their services have been retained to drive these pesks out of the region. Electing to keep their numbers small for this first mission, the group exits town, crossing 'Rogue Creek,' and begins heading east on 'Old Quarry Road' which grows more overgrown the further from town the group travels, just as the Baroness speculated would be the case. The group splits two low, rolling hills, and a second pair of low hills line the roads to the north and south, shortly after passing the first pair. As the group begins passing through this second set of hills, the flooded quarry comes into view straight ahead in the distance.

The group slows its pace at is draws close, moving cautiously. A fifty-foot-wide strip of shore stretches between the lake’s edge and the forty-foot-high quarry wall. It’s strewn with stony debris — the result of centuries of rockslides. Several larger boulders stand against the middle of the quarry wall.

As soon as the quarry comes into sight, Ciar quietly informs the others, "I'm gonna see if I can slip around from the north and spot anything up there, sticking to the side of the cliff. Move slowly to give me some time."

Without waiting for a reply, he quietly moves to the north.

Fulp will take the moment to find a defensive position, trying to stay vigilant to any movement and/or attack that might be directed their way.

Sparrow looks around at the ground, searching for any signs of recent activity through this area.

While Ciar scouts, let's try to stay out of sight. I feel like we are sorta out in the open right here. No point in announcing our arrival before we have to. These things don't like bright light but, there might be thousands of them hiding in all the dark holes that must litter this place.

Sylvan takes the opportunity to heal Grim.
Actually, he does it twice.
The Druid nods in agreement with Sparrow. "We should not fear retreat either. If we can lure them into undergrowth I can incapacitate many of them at once..." he muses.

Once they spot the wall to the east, Ciar slips away from the group and heads north. While the rest of the group remains behind in concealment, Sparrow searches the ground nearby, looking for tracks, and not finding anything the jumps out at him. Nearby, Grim issues Sylvan an appreciative nod after the druid gives him a second tap of the wand returning the dwarf to full health.

Then they wait.

After several long minutes, the group notices a pack of four red-scaled kobolds erupt from behind some of the northernmost boulders near the cliff wall and focus their weapons to the north.

Ciar must have been spotted.

"Agreed!" says Sylvan solemnly. The druid readies his spear and shield and charges directly towards Ciar.

If the kobolds make a hostile move, Sylvan will hurl his spear at the first one that gets within 20'.

Ciar retreats about 20' back from the kobolds, using a series of leaps and rolls in order to make himself a harder target, in case they throw spears at him.

Please indicate on which cell your character will end up on at the completion of your turn, keeping in mind movement rates and the 5' scale.

(Ciar, I realize you'll likely be off the map -- if you're currently 20' away, and tumble 20' back, I will know you're 40' away (unless you only wanted to be 20' away in total, in which case you already are.)

Sylvan will head for square 8, but may very well attack before then if a kobold comes within 20'

Fulp will go to 110, then turn up toward 96 82, etc...He is hoping to stay in their flank while also looking to see if others appear from behind the boulders. how far he gets is directly related to whether they move north toward Ciar.

Sparrow will rush ahead and try to get behind the creatures that are moving to intercept Ciar. He will move in behind them 99 and attack them k4 from behind if it is possible.

If along the way he sees more of the creatures crawling out from behind the rubble, he will attack the first one he comes upon. If there are more visible coming from the south, he stops his advance sooner, trying not to get himself surrounded.

Knowing these creatures are quite weak, he changes his battle strategy to a double weapon attack for a better chance to hit them, attacking multiple opponents if it is possible.

So much for approaching using stealth!

2 Weapon Attack with Club [1d20+2] = 13+2 = 15 Damage [1d6] = 5

2 Weapon Attack with Dagger [1d20+2] = 19+2 = 21 Damage [1d4] = 3

Round 1
Ciar tumbles away from the kobolds, creating some distance between he and them, and deftly bringing his sling to hand at the completion of his roll. Two of the kobolds continue to move on the halfling, stopping just short of his final position, and hurl their spears at him, but neither is able to find its mark.

"We have to help the halfling!" Kassal cries in a rising panic, and his fellow companions lying in wait respond quickly.

Sylvan brings his spear to his hand and rushes directly towards Ciar. His approach is detected, however, and one of the spear-toting kobolds (k4) peels off and intercepts him. The druid slows his rush and looks to skewer the approaching lizard creature. While he is unable to land his intended strike, he is able to avoid the incoming spear being jabbed in his direction.

Grim, like Sylvan before him, gets intercepted by a rogue kobold (k3). The dwarf attempts to disconnect the creature's head from its body with a vicious swipe of his battle axe, but the kobold ducks out of the way just in time. Its attempts to run its spear through the dwarf but the weak thrust is unable to pierce through the dwarf's chain mail armor.

Fulp and Sparrow took a different approach, hoping to catch the foursome of defending kobolds from behind, but find themselves confronted with a new pair of kobolds which emerge from a bit further south. The first (k5) is quickly bludgened to death by Sparrow's club, and stuck with a well-placed dagger strike an instant later. Fulp, armed with his walking stick, narrowly misses connecting with his target... and pays the price, as the second kobold (k6) lands a perfect strike against Fulp, wounding him heavily.

Kassal with his daggers drawn, remains in place, looking to survey the situation before taking any action, and making sure there are no further enemies approaching

Sylvan sticks his spear point-down into the sand, cursing. He draws his scimitar from his belt and swipes at the ugly humanoid.

"Hang in there, Ciar!" he calls to the imperiled halfling.

"Shit..." Ciar mumbles as the two kobolds close in, making his sling useless.

He drops his sling, draws his sword and one of his daggers, and attacks K1 with both.

Sparrow tries to end the little varmint that nearly ended his friend Fulp. He swings both weapons at the scaly dog thing.

If you're hurt badly, fall back! I got this last one.
