Sasha follows the others lead and stows her armor in the "girls" cabin. She stashes her sword and bow with the others above deck and carries only her dagger on her person.

Lets just hope it doesn't come to us having to make a swim for anything, she says dryly.

I'd like to change my last action. Please note that Morgan will stow her weapons (sword and bow) above deck, not with her armor in the girls cabin.

Morgan will then approach Avi and let him know that she's here to help him with whatever he may need.

A steady wind most of the day propels the Devil's Mistress effortlessly, and the ship is able to make great progress; further than either of the first two days, which were solid days in themselves.

Soon after rising, the volunteers are ordered to report to their respective trainers and are given signal whistles attached to secure, tightly braided rope necklaces. "Secure 'em," you're instructed, "'And don't be afraid to use 'em if you see somein'."

Thus begins your training. You are each quickly thrown into learning opportunities, and provided with volumes of seafaring knowledge. You're also worked into guard duty on the same schedules as your mentors, alternating patrol over the port and starboard sides of the ship in five hour watch installments (which feel much longer, as staring out at the endless sea demands much more attention and focus than expected).

At midday, a sharp whistle sound overpowers the normal sound of chopping waves crashing against the side of the ship. Anton, while patrolling the starboard side, notices some activity off in the distance and Kennit produces a pair of lenses with magnifying glass and begins to survey in the direction being pointed out by Anton. Kennit brings his whistle to his lips and blows twice in rapid succession. "Is just a pod of dolphins," the Sailing Master reports. The dolphins are heading in the opposite direction as the Devil's Mistress is traveling and closing on the ship rapidly. "Anyone harms one of these magnificent creatures will be dealt with swiftly, and harshly!" Captain Raleigh barks out from his station. The dolphins leap from the water and perform tricks while passing the ship, with a few of them breaking apart from the rest of the pod and following alongside the ship, continuing the jump and play, before breaking off and returning to the rest of their pod.

The rest of the day is uneventful, and the group manages to sleep when their trainer does. Sleep does not come easy and life at sea is quickly proving to be more difficult than anything the young volunteers have faced thus far in their lives.

End of Day Three
Estimated Miles Traveled (Destination: 275 miles)
- Day 1: 45 miles (45 total)
- Day 2: 45 miles (90 total)
- Day 3: 65 miles (155 total)

----

Please add the signal whistles to your inventories.

Before pushing the action further, I wanted to pose a question for the group. Please see: Devil's Mistress: Trip Details, and discuss there, not here in the 'Prelude' topic.

I'll also add that, if the majority of the group wants to push the action along, and only one (or a few) of you want to spend more time detailing the journey, I'll be happy to move the public action along and work with those players in their private forums. Since this "training" and time spent at sea won't necessarily affect what happens if/after the ship reaches its destination (hint: it should will), it can still be played out even if the "future" is also being played out at the same time.

Day Four
By the Captain's count, it was still a productive day, but the progress seemed less this day, with many crosswinds. Even with the extra eyes manning the various watches, there were no spottings this day.

End of Day Four
Estimated Miles Traveled (Destination: 275 miles)
- Day 1: 45 miles (45 total)
- Day 2: 45 miles (90 total)
- Day 3: 65 miles (155 total)
- Day 4: 35 miles (190 total)

Day Five
After several hours of otherwise calm sailing, a shrill whistle sound fills the air, rousing Anton, whom along with Sasha and Donald, was resting at the conclusion of their period of watch. Elias, whom had been training under Kennit in its use, raises the pair of lenses with magnifying glass and surveys the are with the suspected movement. He concurs that there is, in fact, an unusual waving pattern splitting the surface of the water over the port side bow.

Four elongated shapes, varying in length between four and six-feet, rapidly slither with flattened bodies and paddle-like tails towards the ship. "Sea snakes..." Raleigh growls loud enough for everyone to hear. "Heave to!" the Captain shouts and, without pause, Kennit takes action to balance the ship's rudder and sails, slowly bringing the ship to a halt. "Shift the ballast starboard," he continues, with his crew members following obediently.

The creatures are approximately 60-feet out and swimming in close proximity to one another. "Ranged attacks... ready!" Captain Raleigh orders. His crew quickly rush to the port side of the ship and free crossbows which were being stowed for such purposes. The crew members quickly feed bolts into their weapons and aim, awaiting the Captain's orders.

---

Okay, the ship is roughly 80-feet long, so there is room for everyone on board to take a position on the side of the attack. All the crossbows on the port side have been taken, but an equal number (4) are still available on the starboard side, if people are interested.

We're simply setting the scene here, so please indicate what actions you'd like for your character to take, but do not make any attack rolls at this time.

Sasha doesnt like to be woken up for no reason, so she rises in an even worse mood.

Once she can see what is happening, she runs to the stowed wepons and retrieves her bow.

Never was much with those clunky dwarven pea shooters. But this trusty unit has gotten me out of a few jams. She pats her longbow and knocks an arrow. She rushes to the port side of the ship to get a shot off with the other sailors.

Every wrinkle, corner and whisker on Bingus's face betrays panic. "Water worms! Keep yer wits about ya, folks!"

He makes no move towards the crossbows, but instead gets as close to the middle of the ship (and away from the water) as possible.

His friends, having known him for so long, are accustomed to his lack of grace under pressure.

In his element, Wilby grabs his shortbow and quiver of arrows from the weapons locker and prepares to fire on the sea snakes.

Morgan finds her stowed bow and quiver and lines up along the side of the boat, arrow knocked and ready to fire upon command.

Pendleton stays back from the edge of the boat but watches the sea snakes with interest. "Look at the way they move," he says as he waits for the captain's order. "There are many who theorize that reports of mermaids, sirens, and many other sea monsters are merely sightings of dolphins or sea snakes. Personally, having seen the former, I do not believe any sailor would mistake a dolphin for a mermaid unless he has had far too much rum! But in the dark, at a distance? Perhaps an untrained eye might mistake a sea snake for something else."

"How do these snakes attack boats?" he asks the captain. "They are in the water and we are several feet out of it; one might believe we would be safe from the attacks of water creatures. And yet you reacted with alarm, which suggests that such is not the case. Interesting."

Bingus forgoes his usual joke at the expense of his verbose friend. Instead, he concentrates on not soiling himself.

Elias makes his way to the stowed weapons grabbing his shortbow, quiver, and his short sword just in case he takes position with the others along the starboard side knocking an arrow and waiting for the Captain's order.

"This is quite the line up we have here, how tough could these snakes be?" He doesn't take his eyes off the shapes in the water as he speaks.

The crew, and all volunteers except for Bingus and Pendleton, line up along the port side of the ship, readying their ranged weapons against the potential threat of the rapidly approaching sea snakes.

Pendleton, standing back away from the edge of the ship, wondering aloud how the snakes would attack the ship. "Them sneaky bastards find a way," the Captain snaps, never taking his eyes off threat. "And, make not mistake, their poison'l kill ya!'" When the snakes don't alter course and close to within 30-feet, they force the Captain's hand.

"Fire!" he yells!

---

Alright, here we go.

The crew will have a free round of attacks, so no need for initiative. Remember, we're using the 'Target 20' system. The snakes have an AC of 6, so you'll use one of the two following macros:

Example:
Bow attack (Lvl 1, +1 Dex, AC +6): [1d20+8] ---> (20+ hits)
- or -
Bow attack (Lvl 1, +1 Dex): [1d20+2] ---------> (Result +6 > 20 hits)

Make sense?

Any questions, feel free to ask (in the 'ooc' thread).

Pendleton begins chanting in a strange tongue.

"Vale petra serpentem in magnum mare
Uentus silex cum aqua
Cum de salo frangit aqua, cadent,
Et descendit veniet serpens album caps negant omnes!"

Apologies to anyone who knows Latin.

"Alright you mongrels let's see how you fair against our volley!" Elias fires his bow toward the snake closest to his side, hoping the arrow hits home.

Morgan Ironwolf fires her bow at the oncoming sea snakes:

Bow attack (Lvl 1, AC +6): [1d20+7] = 15+7 = 22, damage [1d6] = 5
(I just realized that since the snakes are within 30 feet, there should be an extra +1 in the macro for short range. So make that 22 a 23.)

Dagg the dwarf hears fire and does so without any hesitation.

Bow attack (Lvl 1, +1 Dex, AC +6): [1d20+8] = 19+8 = 27
Dmg [1d6] = 1

He takes no other action.
