The Tower of Wendall - Overview

The Tower of Wendall is the home of The Wendall, a magic user of some repute (some say ill-repute, but it is mostly his manners). It is located approximately seven miles northwest of Vaul.

Several services are available at the Tower:

1. You can learn a spell from among the following (cost includes price of special magical ink, as well as food and lodging for the duration of time needed to transcribe the spell):

Level 1 Spells-
Read Magic: 100gp, 2 days
Magic Missile: 100gp, 2 days
Sleep: 100gp, 2 days
Read Languages: 100gp, 2 days

Level 2 Spells-
Web: 250gp, 4 days

2. You can rest and stay as a guest. This costs 1 gold piece per day, includes food, and there is room for four guests at a time.

3. You can sign the charter of the Order of the Skull, The Wendall's guild of magicians. This costs 100gp and initiates you into the order. Details of the Order of the Skull will be appended to this post.

4. You can commission arcane experimentation or magical research. Currently the Tower of Wendall has a 10% chance per week to identify a property of a magical item, and each week costs 10gp plus 50gp when a property is found. Thus, if it takes four weeks to successfully identify the first property of an item, the end cost is 90gp. 60gp is due up front, and The Wendall will continue research until the client requests him to stop or he has found all the properties of an item. Payment is due in full upon return to the Tower, or the item will be forfeit and either sold to defray operating costs or added to The Wendall's supplies. Normally, items are dropped off and 100% guaranteed return, but you may choose to stay at the tower while your item is researched at a cost of 5gp per week (rather than the 7gp for normal guests).

This is getting a bit ahead of the Harrowing Thread, but a road has begun construction leading to the Tower of Wendall, allowing folk to arrive there within only a half-day's travel and as a result with a reduced danger (1 in 10 chance of encounter per half-day instead of 1 in 6 like with the wilderness, and some encounters have been removed entirely from the table due to PC actions).

The road will be complete on May 15, and until that time the route has been marked and is periodically patrolled by pairs of Ducal guards on horseback.

Charter of the Order of the Skull:

All magi who sign the charter and pay a fee of 100gp are initiated into the Order as a full member with all the benefits of the first rank of membership for one year. After that time, variable membership dues must be paid based on the individual's rank once per year to continue membership in the Order and access to benefits. All members must increase in rank incrementally, satisfying any requirements for each in turn.

Basic benefits:

accommodation at the Tower for 1sp per day
50gp discount on scribing any spell from the Order's collection

As the resources of the Order grow, the list of benefits will expand.

Ranks:

Member-Mage
Requirements: 100gp signing fee
Benefits: standard, access to 1st level spells from library
Dues: 100gp per year

Member-Wizard
Requirements: 50gp testing fee, ability to cast 2nd level spells
Benefits: standard, access to 2nd level spells from the library
Dues: 150gp per year

Wizard
Requirements: 500gp registration fee, ability to cast 3rd level spells
Benefits: standard, access to all spells in the library
Dues: 250gp per year

Arch-Wizard
Requirements: donation of one non-potion, non-scroll magic item, ability to cast 5th level spells
Benefits: standard, free lodging, access to all spells in the library at double discount, voting authority in Guild matters.
Dues: two weeks of guild service per year
Only three Arch-Wizards allowed at a time. If there is a new applicant for the rank, the current Arch-Wizards vote on whether one will lose the role. If not, the applicant may challenge an existing arch-wizard to a contest once, adjudicated by guild master. If unsuccessful, may not apply again for one year and a day.

Guild Master
Requirements: control of the guild
Benefits: all
Dues: none

Tower Description as of April 20, 1 VC

The Tower of Wendall is separated into three levels:

On the ground floor, rough accommodation for four visitors is available with simple pallets (slightly beefy bedrolls) and a simple kitchen space.
On the upper floor, which is under construction to become fully enclosed, is the Guildmaster's Quarters (private).
The lower level, accessible by a hatch in the ground floor, is kept locked and is the storeroom for the Order's valuable supplies (including magical items and the library).

The exterior is surrounded by a simple fence at a range of approximately fifty feet from the tower itself, slightly off-center, allowing for development of other buildings. Currently, the interior of the fenced-in space is occupied by several tents housing workers and a mercenary who is providing security.
