I'm just gonna, you know, start doing stuff. And then question every response by Dave to make him research it further. :D

Kidding.

But this was a legit question. I thought if he was casting, then he was unarmed and couldn't AOO. Or... OA (opportunistically attack)? However you say it.

AoO (attack of opportunity)

It depends on the spell. Spells require specific things..either verbal, body motions or materials. A spell requiring verbals doesn't matter if your arms are full.

Thanks for all the responses since my last post. Good stuff! And, anyone, do not hesitate to chime in at any time. Yes, I will research anything I don't know, which helps me learn the game, but it is time consuming... and I am running three daily games (which have been playing like at least six of late)... do don't hesitate (even if I will eventually check everything out myself).

tl;dr
Ty would NOT have been subject to an attack of opportunity last round.

dmw71 wrote:He does have a dagger, but it wasn't in his hand when Ty attacked.
Okay, this is important because...
Das wrote:If you're unarmed, you don't normally threaten any squares and thus can't make attacks of opportunity.
Attacks of Opportunity > Threatened Squares
"If you're unarmed, you don't normally threaten any squares and thus can't make attacks of opportunity."
dmw71 wrote:I'll have to look into what action type drawing a weapon is, and if he would have been able to draw it in time. The more I think about it, the more I doubt it.
Drawing a weapon is a 'move' action (see: 'Table: Actions in Combat')
dmw71 wrote:However, entering a threatened square should produce an attack of opportunity (but it will likely need to be changed to a simple unarmed strike instead of a dagger attack).
Attacks of Opportunity > Provoking an Attack of Opportunity
"Two kinds of actions can provoke attacks of opportunity: moving out of a threatened square and performing certain actions within a threatened square."

So, it's moving out of a threatened square, not moving into one. The "performing certain actions" piece is when the 'Table: Actions in Combat' table comes into play.

dmw71 wrote:I also want to confirm that it's possible to make an attack of opportunity in the same round after already acting. I'm fairly certain you can, but just want to make sure.
Yes, you can.
Attacks of Opportunity > Threatened Squares
"You threaten all squares into which you can make a melee attack, even when it is not your turn."

---

Okay, I think we're good here. I'll have to back out that AoO against Ty last round (I will need to correct this... later... Alethan, feel free to remind me if I forget).

I kind of rushed through the above, so if anything seems off or is flat our wrong, feel free to correct.

Just to be crystal Shiney on this moving into combat by moving through a threatened square to engage an armed opponent DOES provoke an AoO.
example
Image

If Ty approaches our sleepy mage by moving to square N ,he's safe.
if Ty goes through square M or N to reach H, and mage had dagger out ,he'd get AoO.
This gets even worse when dealing with large creature who threaten 10+ feet and can make closing to melee dangerous.
Check out the feats Spring Attack and Combat Reflexes. Things can get so damn messy. There's a reason i switched to BRP after so many years. :)

Those squares would be accurate... if Ty were to attack where the light was.

The mage you're in battle with is in square DD, with his back to the fireplace. ;)

Ty snuffs out the light.

Does it have a chance of burning him back?

The light is actually out, per: Subject: 0. Prelude.

In light of this, I'll actually still need an action from Ty for round 6.

They have been remarkably bad. Just be thankful they're coming against this opponent, and not one more deadly.

Yeah, but so far we're 2 for 2 on crappy rolls vs. opponents. :-\

Heh. I hope in all of the games we've played together in, I've made it abundantly clear I have no control over that damned thing.

Ok. Plutivarch is either scared of dying (and i have NO IDEA why :) ) or.....really not involved with the kidnapping? Or knows reinforcement is on its way and willing to stall ?
But he's talking. He may be out of offensive spells?
How do we convince him to sing?
Tell him one of the girls kidnapped is the kings niece and the great crime families don't want a war on crime the king will start to find her?
Tell him one of the girls kidnapped is a niece to a crime boss and he'll pay handsomely to get her back?
If they're kidnapping for slavery, those slaves are probably for sale?
