"Sod all beardless troll-loving orcs!" Bran shouts as the sword cleaves into his back.

He turns to the orc, points his finger at him, and shouts, "FLEE!!!"

Casting Command on the orc who just hit him with the sword.

As soon as Savik realizes that his charm person spell did not take, he mutter a curse in elvish under his breath and unslings his bow to make ready with an arrow. "Yes, well, I guess it would be a misunderstanding to offer you any quarter then, my good swine!" he cackles sarcastically.

When the orc leader moves on Bran and attacks, the elf's visage turns dark and he mutters another curse, this time with much more venomous contempt. Not wanting to chance hitting Bran now that he's been engaged by the orc leader, Savik will target the remaining orc that Gordon fired on and missed.

To Hit: short bow (bonus for high Dex & Elvishness) [1d20+4] = 14+4 = 18, Damage vs sml/med creatures [1d6] = 4

If that arrow does not finish him off, he'll fire on him again with his second arrow. If it does, he'll target one of the wounded orcs that are still alive and struggling. (Regardless of whatever possible orc target that might be, he will not fire towards one that is engaged or where there is a chance of friendly fire!)

To Hit: short bow [1d20+4] = 18+4 = 22, Damage vs sml/med creatures [1d6] = 5

OOC: now THAT is what I'm talkin bout! :P Both arrows marked off.

Glogs continues his straining, trying to minimize wrinkles and ruffle damage.
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

Ulf, since you're moving into the AOE of Gordon's entangle, you'll need to save vs. spell.
Failure is always an option.

Iomhar doesnt see the point in straining too hard at the moment, but does try to keep anything from getting more entangled.

how long does this stuff last?

One full turn. It's been in effect for two rounds, so eight more to go.

ROUND 4

Both of Savik's shots hit home vs. the uninjured orc. He is no longer uninjured. He is, in fact, slain.

Gordon's first shot bites home in the orc leader's flank, who howls out in pain. The second falls short, and I'm going to assign this a base 20% chance of striking either Glogs (1-3 on a d4) or Bran (4 on a d4).

Percentage roll: [1d100] = 1
Glogs or Bran?: [1d4] = 2

It's Glogs, who takes 4 points of damage. Gordon, mark off two more arrows.

Bran COMMANDS the orc leader to flee (I'm assuming you're doing this in the orcish tongue). His intelligence isn't high enough to merit a savings throw, so he turns and limps off through the writhing underbrush as quickly as he can. Moving at halved rate (45") does get him clear of the entangle spell's AOE.

~~
So this leaves you with one gravely injured orc lashed down to a boulder off to your left and the injured orcish leader who's retreated about 45 yards down-ravine from you — still within bow range.

You have 3 injured of your own: Glogs, Bran and Stregghi. And 4 (possibly 5) immobilized within the AOE of the entangle spell.

Entangle is in effect for 8 more rounds.

We'll have an actual initiative roll for round 5. Declare actions please.
Failure is always an option.

"Now shoot the bastard!" Bran yells at the others.

Who is nearest the remaining orc? Is it in melee range with anyone? If not, how far away is it from Bran?

OOC: We need to be cautious about ranged attacks into melee when party members could be hit by friendly fire. That arrow would have killed Bran.

Save vs. spells: [1d20] = 15

If not entangled, Ulf attacks one of the trapped Orcs.

Yes, Ulf, you make your save, but your movement rate is still 1/2d inside the AOE. Assuming you have initiative, you can get in range to deal the entangled orc a coup de grace.

The orc leader is @ 45 yards down-ravine from Bran and Glogs, @ 120 yards from Gordon and Savik at the head of the ravine where it meets the trail. He's clear of the AOE, so can move freely. Not melee-able. He's probably due a morale check, but first that initiative roll:

Orcs' initiative: [1d6] = 2

Ulf stabs the entangled Orc through the throat and then quickly dashes away from the entangled area...heading for the ravine.

Gordon takes careful aim at the back of the leader.

[1d6] = 5 init [1d20] = 18 to hit [1d6] = 6 damage

Just in case, iffin he ain't dead....

He pulls another, waiting to see the result of his first.

[1d20] = 18 to hit [1d6] = 5 damage

Ahh, don't think he gets much further.

I'll post a battle recap here later today. (I'm going to dispense with the formalities of offing the last orc: he's down to 1HP, he's immobilized and he's hopelessly outnumbered.)

In the meantime, I'm going to close this thread until the next combat is joined, and reopen Chapter III: What the Dead Mage Said. You can pick up there with post-combat actions.
~~~
BATTLE RECAP:
Kills: 5 orcs, 1 orc leader
XPs: 119
Casualties: Stregghi -4 HP; Bran -8 HP; Glogs -4 HP
Missiles expended:
Savik: -3 arrows
Gordon: -7 arrows
Spells expended:
Entangle (Gordon)
Charm Person (Savik)
Command (Bran)
Failure is always an option.
Combat 2: Orcs (2) outside tomb entrance
Round 1:
Orcs initiative: 5
Party initiative: 6
Go ahead and state your actions/make rolls for the first round. (Gordon already has taken his; see below.)
I had a battle post, and lost it???
Iomhar sees that sneaking wont work, so he fires at the orcs as well.
short bow : [1d20+2] = 11+2 = 13 ; damage [1d6] = 6
short bow : [1d20+2] = 15+2 = 17 ; damage [1d6] = 5
I don't know the penalty for his firing distance...
Glogs takes shots with his bow as well:
[1d20+2] = 11+2 = 13 [1d6] = 4
[1d20+2] = 16+2 = 18 [1d6] = 3
Bran holds his action until the bowmen fire their rounds. The next round is when he will move closer. If he can get within throwing range, he will do so before hurling his hammer.
