After a twenty minute walk gently downhill, the Cat's Cradle crew, newly joined by Michael Hilkowitz, finds yourselves waiting in line at the Caliph's Menagerie, where young and old alike, natives and tourists, are awaiting entry. Ten minutes later you reach the front of the line and the lobby doors, where it appears the main hold-up has been Mengerie clerks trying to sell memberships to visitors. Today's Grand Opening is free for all, and those who turn down the membership offer are waved on through to the lobby.

The lobby features fiteen-foot tall murals on each side, depicting the ecological history of planet Amir. The sides of the mural closest to the front are gray, white, and pale blue, and show icy mountain peaks and glaciers. This was Amir of the past, hundreds of years ago before the first Caliphs began to terraform the world to fit their vision. As one proceeds further into the room, the murals show increasing greenery, culminating in palms and tropical birds, and the city of Oasis itself.

The exhibits within the Menagerie are some living specimens you've all seen represented by the dolls outside--the bug-horse and many more oddities. There are also some holographic representations of now extict animals.

The children's area has a jungle-gym of enormous animal bones, and a little in-door kiddie train that is designed to look like a seeder, which is more or less a tractor with tank wheels and some additional pretech parts.

There is a poster near the cafeteria for some speakers in attendance today--a prominent local biologist, a popular Amiri artist, and the Vizier of Cultivation himself, who oversees much of the Green Zone's expansion concerns.

Guy walks around trying to glean as much as possible about the transformation and seeders in particular. He looks for any maps of the transformation and looks to see if there are any areas where terraforming might be recently finished or if its farther removed from the others and it might be easier to poach a seeder before they move it elsewhere. He also looks for a biologist to discuss animals or for a terraforming scientist in the crowd.

(Was there anything of interest in the air samples of Oasis? Do we have an ear bud on the preacher and is there anything interesting in the accusations?)

Malachi blends with the locals, but pays special attention to the exhibits for information on the PreTech and science of it all. He follows Michael to keep an eye on him in case of trouble, letting him take the lead on the science inquiry with the officials.

Michael is most interested in the local biologist and uses the compad functionality of his techvest to research this person as he examines the wildlife, both current, and extinct.

Is he familiar with the work of this biologist? Perhaps it is someone he's clashed with in clinical discussion. Maybe Michael isn't a fan of this person's work, if they have made a career of changing the native biology and has lambasted this person in scientific media outlets?

Malachi
The air samples are very clean--purified and breathable. From various exhibits within the Menagerie as well as the data found on the public Net, you know that Amir's natural state is not fit for human habitation, both in terms of its frigid climate and air quality, so the seeders' actions must be having an overall effect on the atmosphere, specifically the massive new forests popping up all over the Zone.

Neither you nor Madoshi could scrounge up a suitably hide-able listening device (just narrowly missed the Luck Save) but if you hang around the dissident a while you'll hear her spout off about the harmful effects of extreme climate control. "It's about balance!" she shouts, briefly locking eyes with you. "Leave the Green Zone as is--put an end to expansion before--"

Before she can finish, Oasis guards haul her away for disturbing the peace with her "Harmonist propaganda"...

Michael
You're certainly aware of Dr. Lyla Kleinsmith and her work in the fields of xeno-ecology and botany. She taught for several years at the University you attended, but actually left the year before you began your studies. Still, her reputation loomed larged in the school, and she'd returned a few times to speak.

Some would say her attitudes about terraforming are quite progressive--others would say "progressive" is an understatement of the sort of extreme planetary engineering she promotes.

It's quite possible you've publicly debated Kleinsmith before. Also, please make a Pretech roll for me please...

Guy
A colorful map of hot spots shows that the next major Zone expansions are to be west and south, projected for completion in 3205 at the earliest.

A young man next to you scoffs as he reads the map's timeline. "Five years? That's being a touch optimistic, considering the fiasco out east," he mutters. His saffron-colored turban bobs as he throws back his head with a sniff. "Seriously, where do they get these so-called facts?" he whines.

"If the terraforming on the eastern border's been stalled, what makes them think they can catch up just in five years?"

Killdozer
As you browse the exhibits, living and taxidermied, you observe many strange creatures--many of which look like they might be decent eatin'. What's the strangest animal you've ever encountered, and/or cooked?

Michael, likely kicked out of more than one seminars, Hilkowitz, Xenobiologist

Michael scoffs, learning that Kleinsmith is involved.
“Of course, miss ‘aesthetics’ is involved.” The last time Michael had seen the woman had been when she had him kicked out of her lecture at his university for asking if she had augmented her pet poodle with two penises to fit her needs along with the other modifications she had made. Seriously, the woman’s dog had pink fur...

Guy shrugs and replies to Killdozer, "Sure we can stay - maybe they'll have a thing or two to say about raising chickens." Guy gives Killdozer a wink.

He then proceeds over to the young man in the turban and says, "This whole plan seems aggressive. What's holding up the eastern front specifically?"

Malachi

Makes sense, he thinks, watching impassively as the Harmonist is dragged off. If the green zone is purifying and expanding, then the undesirable elements are concentrating somewhere. Either grey zone atmospherics are growing more toxic or they're concentrating it in stablized solid compounds which need somehwere to go. Either situation can create an unbalance, like water behind a dyke, and the Amir is the little Dutch boy.

Malachi slides into the exhibits, spotting Michael and falling in as a tail. He blends with the locals, but pays special attention to the exhibits for information on the PreTech and science of it all. He follows Michael to keep an eye on him in case of trouble, letting Michael take the lead on the science inquiry with the officials and thus draw the attention. Malachi takes care to observe those who take an interest -- scientists, officials, or dissidents -- in whatever argument Michael is about to start.

A brief gastronomic overview:
In the gladiatorial slave-pits, food was filthy slop best left unexamined. It was, however, fuel that kept you strong enough to survive, and, as such, worth killing for an extra bowl.

Most of Killdozer's time since then has been aboard ship, or at space-ports, where food is highly sterilized and processed with an emphasis on maximizing nutritional density and long shelf-life. The storage units of the Cradle are full of discrete brown cubes marked with amino acid counts. On the space-lanes, any crew-member can tear open a packet and keep themselves alive, but the monotony of this kind of diet is considered a concrete danger to the mental health of the crew. So, culinary skills, however rudimentary, are prized, and most ships have at least a small galley with a standard-issue copy of Food for Crew: Rotational Schedule of 17,000 Indexed and Illustrated Recipes for Purposes of Gustatory Stimulation.

For Killdozer, this file was Aladdin's Cave of Wonders, and he has branched out from their to explore the wider culinary universe. The idea of being able to track the source of your food to actual plants and animals grown in orbital banks or even in the soil of real planets seems sublimely luxurious to him, almost decadent. On these stressful forays off ship, the only way he can keep his feet moving is to seek out such foodstuffs.

Smaller animals with simpler food chains are the most common to encounter in and around space stations and ports. Bivalves and insects are fairly common. The traveller-fish that Killdozer has his heart set on bringing aboard are rarer: a mini-ecoystem in a self-contained aquatic environment, based on a half-dozen varieties of bacteria that feed off spare radiation from the ship's drive. The bacteria feeds a breed of minute mollusk, which feeds blind, albino flatfish. These fish have been genetically engineered for the ravages of space travel, and to provide succulent, flavorful flesh with a rich nutritional profile. Having a pod of traveler-fish is a status symbol.

Larger animals that require more extensive support systems to raise are the most exotic and expensive morsels.

With xeno-forms, the first thing is to inspect the standard information sheet (or scan) on bio-compatibility. In general, they would be considered less desirable to eat than the more familiar species, with their millennia of breeding and engineering for taste and nutrition.

All of which is to say: A pig is probably the most exotic animal Killdozer has ever eaten. A cow is a creature of legend. A whale is a dream-food fit for gods and emperors.

Guy:
Turban Man points to the eastern Zone on the map. "Of course those Harmonists, for one thing. Like, not that they’re a big group, but there're always just enough of them around to cause trouble." He smiles with faint approval.

"Also--and of course the Caliphate just won't admit it--but the seeders are having trouble making their changes stick. The Gray Zone's…resisting, somehow."

He stops talking abruptly, and eagerly offers to send you a link to his blog--"AMIR REVEALED". "Well, you should read up about it here. Natives know all the shit that's going down on Amir, though most are cool with just going with the flow. This museum seems cool and all, but it's just a distraction, y'know?" He gazes at the map once more.

Malachi:
The majority of the crowd seems to be fascinated offworlders (much like yourself), and enthusiastic natives (much like you appear to be), with some showing from the scientific community as well. There's a few people, including a cute little old married couple, whom you recognize from the Fallen Angel Casino.

Your homeworld was lower-tech than Amir, so there wasn’t any gene-modding to speak of on Agamemnon, and certainly the Republic would never encourage the study of such a thing, but in your military service you heard stories of engineered warbeasts, so the basic principles aren't foreign.

From what you can tell, most of the living species on display have been engineered for aesthetics, but some are a bit on the predatory side.

Michael:
You also pick up on the species' mostly benign design, and the few that are made of stronger stuff. What astonishes you most is just how pervasive Amir's catalog of engineered species is. Judging from the exhibits of native beings, the Caliphate imports and introduces dozens of new species every decade. Though seemingly selected specifically for this new terraformed environment, their populations are not as abundant as one would reason.

Kleinsmith will be speaking at 4:00 this afternoon. There is a picture of her on the poster, looking smug as you remember her, wearing a fine pantsuit. Tailor-made to fit, you assume.

Killdozer:
Passing a rather large cage, you are spotted by a two-trunked mammoth, who gently stomps his way over to you curiously. It wraps its right trunk around one of the cage's gilded bars, and lets the tip his other trunk dangle idly through the cage. There is still a railing that leaves five feet between the cage and the spectators. The mammoth seems to almost wave at you with its free trunk, letting out a brief grunt.

The little kids bopping up and down on either side of you turn their attention from the beast when they notice your own visage, and they scoot away to their mothers.

Turban Man is the worst super hero. His power is apparently to create conspiracy websites.

Guy is not what to make of the man. On the one hand, what he's saying could be valuable in acquiring a seeder. On the other hand, he seems quite odd. Guy thanks the man and goes off to find a terminal to look at the website or a zoologist.

In response to Killdozer, Guy replies,"Mayhaps - do you think he likes to cook too? It's hard to say whether he's happy; not everybody hates their cage. For some it's preferable to what'd outside. Here he has food, shelter and no real danger. Who would we be to take that from him? That's all some men long for."

Michael, wishing he could smoke inside the museum, Xenobiologist

Michael shakes his head at the picture of his pantsuit clad antagonist. She’s a kind of crazy that never goes out of style.
Michael flicks on his communicator as he heads toward the lecture area.

“Hey Gee, Mal, KD. I recognize the dame behind this mess. She’s bad news. I’m going to go see if I can get a seat at her lecture. That may not go too well.”

“Thanks for having my back.”

Michael will head into the lecture area, looking for a seat in the back, staying as inconspicuous as he can (which isn’t very).

I think we’re all kind of wandering away now, so didn’t want to assume I’d hear the turban guy conversation. I’m also assumimg that Malachi and I have met. Not sure if we played that out.

I am happiest hand-waiving that. "The group found a quiet place to talk before approaching the menagerie. After finding what Michael was about, they divulged the basic nature of their plans and established a sense of comraderie and trust, with him agreeing to Guy's proposal to join the crew after a successful venture." Sounds good Marullus--good getting the crew all on the same page!

Oasis, Planet Amir
June 3, 3200
4:00 PM

Michael
The menagerie's Event Hall is pretty well full, but you don't mind, as there's plenty of room at the back of the auditorium. The front stage is smallish, and set up with a podium and a holo-projector, as well as three chairs--one for Dr. Lyla Kleinsmith, and the others for the other speakers, the Vizier of Cultivation and the local bio-artist.

The Director of Operations for the Menagerie takes the stage promptly at 4:00, and introduces Dr. Kleinsmith as a "revolutionary voice in the field of terraformation science". Kleinsmith arrives at the podium to uproarious applause.

Her lecture has the typical hallmarks of her published work--feverish enthusiasm for experimentation and refinement, pooh-poohing moral considerations.

A crowd-pleasing display cast by the holo-projector shows a grand forest, one of Amir's Green Zone jungles. A massive tractor-like machine on tank treads crawls into view--one of Amir's famous terraforming devices, the 'seeder'.

With these inspiring images, Kleinsmith expresses how proud she is to give back to her homeworld, and then announces that, in conjunction with the Caliphate's Vizier of Cultivation, she will be spearheading the next Green expansion effort personally, contributing some of her own biological designs.

Guy
The staff zoologists are all attending Dr. Kleinsmith's presentation--all save one small woman, with a badge that reads "Assistant".

As for checking out the site, you try to get to it on a public terminal in the lobby, but the Menagerie has blocked access to it, flagged as "Offensive Materials". The lobby terminals seem to be mostly for the benefit of tourists, to look up good restaurants and clubs to try after touring the zoo.

Also, as you walk to the terminal you get the distinct notion--and yes, now you are sure--that someone is eyeing you from afar. In the crowd there have been a few faces popping up seemingly wherever you go.

Killdozer reluctantly pulls himself away from the two-trunked mammoth to attend the lecture. The moment he sits down, however, he begins to fidget. "I don' know," he says to one in particular. "Some animals is okay in cages. But that guy got spirit. Yuh kin see it innis eyes. An' spirit don't like t'be behind bars, no matter how cushy they got it." He nibbles fretfully on his fingernails.
