I will also add that the group does not need to remain together. If Sylvan wants to remain inside the fallen tower but Kassal wants to leave, the pair can agree to split up.

Ciar and Fulp can decide what they want to do, and Festus and Sparrow are prepared to make a decision as well.

Festus, the last to cross before Sparrow, is the closest, and is both 25' away and 5' above him.

Given the situation, no. At least not easily.

Actually... this is an interesting question.

Assuming...
  • When Ciar went first, he took the lead end of a length of rope with him and, once safely across, fastened his end on the target side. The remaining length of rope would still be on the “far” side.
  • With Sparrow being the last to cross, and therefore the last to be left holding the rope, it would make sense that he fastened it around his waist (or something similar).

Having said that, it would make sense that, yes, Sparrow is currently secured to the other end of the rope.

Is this narrative only, or does Fulp need to continue for another round/turn?

Narrative.

Fulp can continue to attempt to clear the last little bits, but Sparrow is safe from taking additional damage.

I know we discussed earlier, but I am confused.
How many ropes do we have? ie, whose rope was burnt/used for the ledge walk?

thanks

I will remind everyone that the tower is actually just outside of town, and town could be reached in minutes -- it's less than 1,000 feet to the center of town.

Yeah, I remember it was close but I thought lifting someone up two stories with a rope could be tricky.

Understood, and I wasn't suggesting the party do anything they don't want to do. It was merely a friendly reminder since it's been a while in "real" time, but not in game time.

Shouldn't be a big deal doing it one story at a time.

As it relates to game mechanics, it's a bad idea to stay in a dungeon when you can stay in the wilderness or, better yet, the safety of an inn.

In most RPG rule sets, random encounter checks are made quite frequently in the dungeon environment (maybe as often as once every few turns) and less frequently outdoors (as seldom as twice a day), with adjustments made for the climate. Obviously, there isn't too much of a chance of interruption of a night's sleep in the inn.

"And when the dice are really against you, it doesn't matter if you hole up in a room in a 'cleared' dungeon level, with only one exit, and you spike the door and set watches - bad things can still happen," says the voice of experience.

Sure if we can brace against something. I'll be the base, if Sylvan, you do not mind being the second rung. Although... Is that table loose? or maybe those cots we saw? MAybe we are overthinking this, and can just stack a couple things together and make a ladder for Ciar or Kassal to climb?
My thought here is that if the cots have slats built in, that maybe by stacking 3 of them end to end and securing them with twine, rope or anything else we have, we could build a 15 foot ladder.

Yeah, I agree regarding the game mechanics, but Sylvan thinks it's safe down there. It's a balance of relative risk between encountering a monster and causing damage to a near-dead ranger as we try to pull him up. Perhaps banging into a wall or the entrance to the trap door could kill him.

But it's a moot point anyway, considering the party's already decided.

Ahhhhh.... Things become more clear about the trip down now.

I was not envisioning the beam as being across the hole, but near the hole.

Across the hole, yes, I can easily see what onlyme is talking about. I just thought it would be too big and block too much of the opening.

The question, then, is where is the beam? Going across the hole? Or near the hole?

I always thought the beam was near the hole, not over it (though, over it makes a lot of sense).

Then again, I was confused how Sparrow was able to use his rope to get everyone down and retrieve it from below once everyone was already down.

I'll have to go back and look to see how things were set up (and left) later tonight.

Crap ... i was definitely thinking it was over it enough to loop the rope. That is why fulp said about shooting an arrow with twine over it and having it drop down the other side...
