Round Three

Enemy Initiative [1d6] = 5

The orcs are fast.

Jem rushes up to the entrance just as the orcs begin to pile out of it, a half-dozen springing into view but with an indication of more to come, waiting inside for the opening to be clear. The rest of the party moves up almost simultaneously, as Orrin struggles to keep the dog between him and the advancing party. Lug breaks stride briefly, letting fly with another arrow from his unusual bow, and is satisfied to see it plunge directly through one of the leather armor plates on the dog's back. The mangy cur continues its assault against Orrin without effect, taking a small slash from the dwarf's sword in return for its efforts.

Dog vs. Orrin [1d20] = 6, damage [1d6] = 5

Remus fires his crossbow, finding the back of one of the orcs massed around Jem. The thing looks infuriated but is still standing! Naila remains at a distance, continuing to hold her spell in expectation that more orcs will be in sight soon, and wanting to catch them within the effect of the spell. Her caution seems merited, as Jem somehow manages to keep four of the orcs at bay as they surround him. In turn, he swings his flail in a mighty arc around him, crying out to Pelor for aid against the powers of darkness, and the god seems to hear. The head of the flail sweeps behind the neck of one orc, and the force of the attack wraps it around, dragging the hapless creature along with it until the head smashes into the chest of the orc next to it. The pair of them go down in a messy heap as a result of the attack, one dead and one prone.

Orcs vs Jem [1d20] = 7, [1d20] = 13,[1d20] = 5, [1d20+2] = 2+2 = 4

Jem vs. Orc [1d20+2] = 20+2 = 22, damage [1d6+2] = 2+2 = 4

Nearby, Adrienne fares far worse. Two orcs have split from the group to target her with their curved swords. Despite her improved armor, she is unaccustomed to the weight and her lamed leg, weak from her sprint across the valley, is ready for collapse. As a result, her guard is weak and both of the orcs successfully strike her. She collapses under the attacks, bleeding freely from wounds on her arms and torso.

Orcs vs Adrienne [1d20] = 17, [1d20] = 19
Orc damage vs Adrienne [2d6] = 6

Actions and Initiative!

Jem's Enemies:
Orc 1: 2 HP (hit by Remus' arrow)
Orc 3: 3 HP (prone)
Orc 4: 2 HP

Adrienne's Adversaries:

Orc 6: 6 HP

Lug, starting to get the hang of his new bow, sets his sights on one of the orcs fighting Adrienne.

Symurgwyl (Longbow +1/+2): [1d20+2] = 16+2 = 18, Dmg: [1d8+2] = 8+2 = 10

The powerful bow sends its arrow straight, true, and deadly.

Somone throw an initiative just to give us two shots at it. If it's low, I'll roll.

Orrin takes a swing at the dog, but the cur seems to shift and move out of his way with each stroke.

I was thinking that too...if we have one more pack of orcs boil out that doorway, she'll maximize the effectiveness of that spell. Then we don't die so fast.

Also, I was looking at the character sheets - I didn't realize Jem was so beefy! Remus is pretty solid too, for an old guy. :lol: we may survive this yet.

You can always say something like: if possible, I wait until more orcs are in sight then I cast sleep, but if they seem to be done pouring forth I don't miss the chance to cast now. Then if your initiative is higher then you can still catch a second set.

Naila casts sleep on the latest batch of orcs...

sleep [2d8] = 5

Sadly enough, with a sleep roll like this, I don't think it's going to matter when it goes off. We need to drop whats here and start putting the blade to the sleeping orcs before they wake up.

Round Four:

Enemy Initiative [1d6] = 6

God damn these are well-disciplined orcs.

Jem sees Adrienne go down, horribly wounded, and his first instinct is preservation. He turns from the cluster of orcs attacking him to force his way through the melee and tend to her injuries. As they attempt to strike him down, he throws his shield out to one side, deflecting two blows, but the third sword-thrust is cunning and cuts up in under his guard, dealing him a significant blow. (max damage 6 points taken). It does not stop him, however, though he is staggering as he reaches the fallen woman's side and begins bandaging her, surrounded by the entire mass of orcs.

Orcs vs. Jem [1d20+2] = 5+2 = 7, [1d20+2] = 12+2 = 14, [1d20+2] = 20+2 = 22

Remus fires his crossbow at the group, but the nearest orc raises his shield and the bolt lodges itself harmlessly in its surface. The orc snarls at the older man and breaks off the shaft with a swipe of its short-bladed sword.

Naila rushes forward a bit further and incants her spell. Three of the orcs around Jem fall to the ground, joining the large number already unconscious on the battlefield. That leaves only two orcs up and in fighting condition, one of which was previously wounded by one of Remus' missiles.

Orrin, however, is not faring as well, and the dog finally finds a break in his defenses, allowing it to bite him viciously in the back of one leg. (he takes 6 damage)

Dog vs. Orrin [1d20] = 19, damage [1d6] = 6

Lug's well-aimed shot lands squarely in the chest of one of the orcs standing over Jem--in fact, the one that had taunted Remus with his sword-stroke. The orc is easily felled by the powerful shot and lands atop his unconscious comrades.

The opening of the structure continues to pour forth more orcs, adding five to the melee around the entrance this round. For now, the entrance seems clear, but the drums within the structure continue to beat. The lone orc from the initial group still ready to attack levels a sword-blow at Jem, but once again the cleric's shield protects him from harm.

Orrin, increasingly nervous with his fresh wound, fails to finish off the injured dog.

Orc 4: 2 HP (asleep)
Orc 5: 6 HP (asleep)
Orc 6: 6 HP (asleep)

Orrin growls in the dog's face and dispatches it with a quick swing of his sword, his attention now on the crowd of orcs surrounding Jem and Adrienne. This is starting to look like a very bad idea, he thinks.
