Into the Spiders' Den (Trendt/Sammy/Freddie)

#1 Post by SlyFox »

Trendt has gone out to the cart to bring in the last two barrels of oil and places them near the door where the goblins are locked up, two very large, very heavy statues leaned up against the door to hopefully help keep them in there. Since Trendt speaks the kobolds' language, both Osh and Kosh go with him and tell him that they have the key to the door where the goblins are locked up, should he want to get inside, but they will have to spend some time moving those statues out of the way to get to the door knob.

The other two barrels of oil have already been placed at the entrances to the two main spiders' lairs, one barrel at each entrance. Rubesca, very strong and hardy, has decided to join Trendt in dealing with the spiders and Freddie has followed along, deciding that anyone facing the spiders needs to have more in numbers at this point. Besides, where there are spiders, there are usually dead things and maybe even treasure.

Trendt wearily and with lit torch looks into the cavern. Hoping the light from it will not draw the spiders attention. He looks to the ceiling, around to the walls and the floor to see where any spiders might be.

ooc: fine by me.

Trendt speaks quietly to the kobolds "Have you ever seen how many spiders reside here? Also either of you a good shot with a bow? Or know how to use throwing hammers?"

Freddie readies his bow and sneaks in quietly beside Trendt as the dwarf holds his torch aloft. They both investigate the walls and ceiling and see a lot of webbing going from floor to ceiling along the western indentation of the wall. The entire room is circular, definitely nature made. Large cocoons can be seen in the webbing up high on the wall and there are pieces of old clothing stuck to the webs, along with some kobold bones here and there. Behind the thickest part of the webbing near the floor, there appear to be human bones, probably an adventurer who met his end. There is a glint of something shining beside the human bones, but the spiders are not readily seen.

Rubesca and the kobolds walk in and the kobolds whisper their answer to Trendt. "We only use daggers and swords, but have trained to use spears and javelins. These short swords are all we have right now though. The others kept us only with rusty daggers as a sign of our low rank."

There appears to be some slight movement on the ground next to the human bones, but it is only a flash, then it is gone. Rubesca holds her torch aloft to get a better look without moving closer. She keeps her flail ready.

Trendt backs out looks to freddy or someone for help pouring this oil barrel's contents into the room. Once the oil has traveled as far as it can hopefully inward Trendt will touch the lit end of his torch to the oil unless the oil runs back out towards the party members with him.

Sorry I have to keep playing Freddie. I wish he'd get his buns in here.

The floor in this room slopes slightly upward from the hallway, so the oil poured out touches the very edge of some webbing. Rubesca uses her torch to light the northernmost side of the web on fire while Freddie backs out of the room with Trendt. Once the kobolds and Rubesca are out of the room, Trendt lights the oil that goes in enough to touch the southernmost part of the webbing. Not too much of the oil is used as a result and can be used in another room after this.

Within moments, the web is in flames, being highly flammable.

3 large spiders drop from the ceiling and begin scrambling toward the companions, hissing and squealing.

Fire damage: Roll for initiative.

Spider Initiative: [1d6] = 3

Sammy, being late to the party decides to step into the fromt and defend the rest of the group. He selects a target and swings as he says "Don't worry, I got this."

[1d20+1] = 19+1 = 20 to hit, [1d10+1] = 7+1 = 8 damage

Party wins initiative.

Round 1!!

As the 2' diameter spiders scramble toward Trendt, he throws a hammer at one of the smaller spiders, injuring it. It hisses and squeals, but continues its pursuit, pouncing on the dwarf.

Sammy has come from the statue room and steps in front of the others, swinging his massive sword. He easily chops a spider in two, but one is left and pounces on the barbarian.

Rubesca and the kobolds are trapped behind Trendt and Sammy and cannot fight as they are backed up into the entrance to this room.

Freddie had snuck into the room quietly, but now finds himself stuck inside of the room without escape. Instead of worrying about spiders, he notices 3 giant centipedes coming after him, apparently having been what was moving around near the human bones. He backs into the eastern wall to avoid the flames in the webbing, but aims his bow, letting an arrow fly at one of the centipedes.
To Hit [1d20+3] = 1+3 = 4; Dmg [1d6] = 1
Natural 1

Freddie's arrow misses as the wood elf stumbles back against the east wall in fear of the creepy crawlies coming directly at him!
Saving throw: [1d20] = 7
6-10 = Fumbled Weapon

Freddie, surprised, drops his bow as he can't believe what is happening, surrounded by flames and giant centipedes as he is. The centipedes are on him in seconds.
Freddie can't attack next round - must pick up his bow.

The spider that pounced Trendt goes for a bite with its moldy fangs.
[1d20] = 10
The creature hits the dwarf's helm and does no damage.

The other spider bites at Sammy's face.
[1d20] = 20 Double Damage!
The spider's fangs chomp into Sammy's face and he feels the pain hit him immediately! -2 HP (Make Save vs. Poison)

C1: [1d20] = 4
C2: [1d20] = 13
C3: [1d20] = 16
Each of the centipedes hits a piece of Freddie's leather armor, the last one nearly getting his ankle!

Monster Init: 4
Party Init: 1 - Monsters win!

Round 2!!

Trendt begins struggling with the spider that sits atop his head, but the spider tries to bite him again.
[1d20] = 13
The spider's moldy fangs come frighteningly close to his throat, but miss as the dwarf manages to get a hold of it and toss it off of him, clear across the room.

Sammy, too, is struggling with the spider that just bit him as it goes for another attack. +2 to Save; Saving throw successful.
[1d20] = 6
Sammy grabs hold of the spider with his left hand before it can bite down and uses his right to slice its head clean off! The spider falls dead at his feet while the other that Trendt threw across the room begins making its way toward him.

The three giant centipedes go in for what they think will be a kill on Freddie the Fop!
C1: [1d20] = 19 No physical damage. Need Save vs. Poison
C2: [1d20] = 13 Miss
C3: [1d20] = 4 Miss

Freddie's Save vs. Poison +4: [1d20] = 20 Save successful!
Forgetting his bow for the moment, Freddie draws his short sword, intending to attack one of the centipedes.
To Hit [1d20+1] = 17+1 = 18; Dmg [1d6] = 6
With a clang to the stone floor, Freddie's sword slices the head of one centipede off, effectively keeping it from going in two separate directions. He merely winces at the sting on his ankle, shaking it off as he prepares to kill the other two.

End of Round 2

Roll for initiative.

I edited the outcome for Freddie as he made his saving throw, but I was thinking he needed a lower number. I swear, senility strikes at will. But that's what happens on Wed. and Thur. Sorry about any confusion.

Monster Initiative: 1
Party Initiative: 6 Party wins!

Round 3!!

DM Secret Roll:
[1d20] = 14 Negative outcome
Trendt pulls out his mace and moves to fight beside Sammy as the last spider comes into position. He swings his large mace at the eight legged freak. His mace lands a heavy blow, but the spider proves tougher than it looks. Two of its legs pop off from the force.

Sammy swings his massive sword to finish off the spider and succeeds. The thing crumples up dead, two legs separated from the body and twitching on the cave floor.

Freddie is still fighting with two giant centipedes and swings at one with his short sword.
To Hit [1d20+1] = 18+1 = 19; Dmg [1d6] = 2
The centipede struck stops moving as its head falls off with the force of the blow.

The last foe in the room is 1 giant centipede and it is on top of Freddie's foot. It goes for a bite at the wood elf's ankle.
[1d20] = 10
The centipede fails to get through Freddie's leather boot and squirms as it bites the material, doing no harm.

End of Round 3

Freddie moves his foot in the nick of time as Trendt brings his mace smashing down on the centipede, leaving the creature nothing more than a stain on the rock floor of the cave. Freddie grabs his bow from the ground and sheaths his short sword, thanking the dwarf for helping out with that disgusting, squirmy little problem.

The spider webbing along the east wall has burned away, the egg sacks having exploded in the fire and killing off the unhatched babies. All that remains are the bones of kobolds and a human that met their end here long ago. Something glints on the floor beside the human bones, but the room is too dark to see and the glint is coming from something small and hidden up against the east wall, partly hidden by the bones.
