Session 10: Temple of the Utterkell Cult

#1 Post by Johnny Champion »

DM: I have no idea if this is the 10th session or the 20th, but I thought this is the best way of labeling dialogue and actions based upon that session (next week's topic will be Session 11).

I will place an update on where the party is, what happened the previous encounters and what is at stake in this thread.

Players need to let me know how many HPs, spell slots, HD they have at this point.

More to come....

Looking forward, what's our plan of action after this temple? Rickul feels an urgency to seek out Dorian, to our Southeast, and find out what happened to him.

Update: As you inspect what is left of the skeletal figure of Navaron, Mooki detects strange markings on the back of the raised altar. Brandishing his Holy Symbol, cleric Lumiere, calls upon the light of Malazar, and soon, with the guidance from the Forgotten Sun, the feint outlines of a secret trap door are detected, and the markings are revealed to be a code of sorts.

Meanwhile, Navaron's body has become dust and his weapons and armor have broken upon the ages of time, clearly animated from the life once his. Faelwen calls upon her arcane knowledge and realizes that Navaron, though clearly with some lich like powers, was in some other state of undead. She worries what lies ahead.

The decayed corpses of the ghasts, once peasants of a lost town that may someday be under the protection of the party's keep, have soon vaporized into a pile of bones. The Oberdon Paladin offers a rite over the remains to secure passage to the light.

With no interest in the bones of the undead, Mooki is able to use the combination revealed by the light of Malazar, and then unlocked the latch which opened the trap door. Dampness enters the room and eerie sounds of chains and drops of water meets her senses. Looking into the darkness below, Mooki sees nothing with her dark vision other than stairs winding down. It appears that this opening and passage have NOT been used in many years.

Voices are heard by the large double doors that seem to be the primary entrance to the Sanctuary. Rickul recognizes the rough guttural voice of minotaurs and his ancient bow informs him through a strange combination of emotions and colors, that evil approaches outside the doors. But as he looks into the stairs below, a even more dreadful sense of death and ancient evil, await.

But the sense of foreboding that Rickul feels is not echoed by his mighty bow. He informs the party that though we feel some semblance of evil, it mustn't be active in the chamber below. He, with several of his party members (please enter here), proceed down the ancient stairway. They arrive to a dark chamber, where a large stone table with intricate bas-relief of a land somewhat familiar to the party, carved into the 8' x 10' limestone surface. After shining magical and natural light upon the bas-relief, the party recognizes certain natural markers. But the most important mark is a etching with a symbol that indicates where the party is currently, a symbol of Navaron's Crypt. An ancient symbol of Vecna, with a scripted V, is clearly marked. The party knows now where the lost tomb of Vecna resides!

DM: Bas-relief is a type of 3D sculpture that has less depth to figures than they actually have, when measured proportionately (to scale). In this case, the figures are geographical landscape of the Scholl Valley. This technique retains the natural contours of the land, and allows the work to be viewed from many angles without distortion of the geography itself. This is a master work.

Faelwen casts a ritual Detect Magic spell to see what lights up within the hoard. She looks with great interest (and a ritual Identify spell) at the Incredible Ring, Great Sword and Girdle of Giant Strength. Should anything else light up with a magical aura ( perhaps the gold medallion, exquisite necklace, bracelet or man's ring) she will turn her attention to it at once.

DM:
The Great Sword is magic: Drugonfell, one of a line of swords (assumed to be around 20) made during the Nexus of the Dragonkind over 350 years ago.

+1 Great Sword (2 Handed), (+3 vs Dragonkind + deals extra 1d10 damage on hit)

Wall of Force: If readied, the wielder can use a 5' radius Wall of Force (WoF) to protect against dragon breath. This must be invoked as a full action prior to breath. The dragon will not be able to detect the invisible WoF. If the dragon has True Sight it must make a DC16(perc) to detect.

Fearful Presence: Wielder is immune to this effect

Obviously Tungsten takes a major shine to this Great Sword, but he knows there is another great weapon fighter in our party as well. He also ponders about how much good this sword did its wielder who is probably a pile of scorched bones in this lair. He would put it to better use.

The answer to Tungsten's unspoken pondering is evident in the dragon-dung smell emanating from the weapon O.o
If Tungsten does end up wielding this weapon, combined with his other sword, we're gonna nickname him "Flame's Bane" or something. lol

Well we can all be sure that he wasn't cowering in the corner for the entire battle unlike some bounty hunter we know

All,
please note that on the Gems spreadsheet, under the "Treasure" tab (where we'll put whatever treasure we find until we divvy it up and/or sell it off), for the Chest #2's contents, you'll notice several gems to start off with, then a piece of jewelry, then gems, then jewelry, etc.
NOTE that there's only QUANTITY ONE (1) of each of the pieces of jewelry. The written quantities are for the sole purpose of having the base value for the piece add up correctly. The GEMS directly underneath the piece of jewelry are what kind, grade, size, & qty of gems are IN the appropriate piece of jewelry as listed:
  • Bracelet inlaid with 21 yellow quartz gems
  • Amulet (medallion) containing three sapphires
  • Ring adorned with two topaz
  • Pearl necklace consisting of the noted pearls
