Favor of the Gods

#1 Post by SlyFox »

Instead of just having the gods interfere willynilly, which they may still do if people are in dire straights, I've decided to come up with a system for earning favor points and using them.

Clerics (and Druids as the sub-class) will be the gods' highest priority, so will earn points at a higher rate than most. Paladins and Cavaliers will be right up there with clerics and Rangers will usually be a close runner-up of the three.

Non-clerical (non-druid) characters not of the paladin, cavalier and ranger class who have chosen deities will be awarded favor points at a slightly slower rate than the above stated.

Non-clerics (non-druids) and characters not of the paladin, cavalier and ranger class without chosen deities can do things without being aware of it that earn them the favor of the gods, but they're rate of gaining points will be even slower than another character who has chosen a patron deity.

These points will be looked at each time someone wishes to ask a serious favor of their deities, and some favors will cost more points than others, depending on the severity of the favor involved. This can include intervening on behalf of a character who does not have a chosen deity, and that is when those characters without deities will have their own points looked at as well, to add to whatever favor is asked.

Favor points will be earned by undertaking quests that involve the deities in some way, completing tasks given by the deities, and basic religious practices and attention paid to deities. The number of points earned toward deity favor will depend on these variables along with the character involved. You may never know when you might be doing a favor for a deity, while other times it will be specifically stated. Keep the favor points earned on your character sheets somewhere and when the time comes, they will be noted and subtracted for particular favors. These favor points have nothing to do with experience points.

The favor of the gods also has nothing to do with alignment. There can easily be evil clerics, anti-paladins, and cavaliers and rangers with evil natures who serve evil gods. The same is true of neutral characters.

Sometimes you may be asked to subtract favor points from your sheet. This is because something fortunate occurred in your favor that was a direct result of divine intervention. If you are ever in the negative, that means you owe your god a favor or bigger sacrifice than usual.

I will use this thread to keep a running tally of favor points in case anyone needs to update their sheets. To start, everyone has 0 points.

Hmm just one more thing wouldn't paladins & knights be a bit more in favor of earning favor points at a slightly clerical like pace?

Yep! You're right. Actually, not just paladins and cavaliers, but also rangers since they tend to give what they can't carry toward some charity. I'll add that in.

Hmm in that case wouldn't druids be semi in favor as well?

Yes, I was considering druids as a sub class of cleric. I should just put it there and be clear though. ;)

don't we all need that from time to time? It was my pleasure to be of assistance. :)
