Adrift into a Strange Land

#1 Post by Dizlexus »

Adrift into an Strange Land
You wake in darkness with a fine lump on your head. You are chained and bound inside a small compartment. You can see nothing. The most prominent sound is that of timbers creaking. You also hear the muted moans and muddled speech of other people. The ground rocks to and fro. You have enough room to get up on your knees and you find what must be a chamber pot. For six days your only company is a chubby faced boy who comes to cram foul food into your mouth. He says nothing you understand. He empties your chamber pot, at least every other day.

On the 7th day the boy is joined by several armed men who take you out of your box for exercise. A half an hour of walking back and forth on the lower deck - - then back in the box - - never a ray of sun. The exercise occurs every 2nd day - - like the chamber pot. The men and the boy have olive toned skin and their eyes are almond shaped. Their clothing is strange and sometimes beautiful. They are from the Orient.

Perhaps a month passes, and one day there is a commotion in the hull of the ship. Loud foreign speech and many footsteps drown your deprived senses.

The lid of you compartment is flung open. The chubby faced boy appears and begins to unlock your manacles. You look up to notice the armed men – sailors – this time more of them. The little boy pulls you out of your compartment and goes about removing other people from other compartments. This is the first time you have seen the other prisoners. Some of them you may know from your home in the west.

A month in a box makes folks feel and look bad. The smell must be enormous. The look on the faces of the sailors suggests as much.

You struggle to find your feet as you are led out of the hull of a ship and up to the deck. As your eyes adjust to the painful light, you begin to discern some detail. The ship is a merchant’s vessel and even the deck is full of western trade goods. The ship was not built to specialize in the slave trade and there are only a hand full of prisoners.
Image

Several sailors are on deck rummaging through boxes and barrels of rations. They are throwing most of the food overboard. You see that the food is blighted by an aggressive green and white mold.

An Oriental man in elaborate and strange clothing approaches you. He keeps the company of one of your own – a westerner.

The foreigner speaks, “Jūbun'na shokuryō ga arimasen. Anata ga ikanakereba naranai”.
The westerner translates: “He said there is not enough food. You people have to go”.
The westerner continues, “be thankful, you would have been sold as slaves to the ruling class of Wa, or worse yet, you may have been forced to fight in the arena at Narconia in the land of Tessera.”.

As the westerner finishes his sentence you realized that you have been grouped with the other prisoners. You are heavily guarded. To resist would to be cut down. You think for a moment that you will be thrown overboard when you notice the life boat in the water, port side.

You are instructed to lower yourself into the boat. Once you and the three other prisoners are seated in the boat, sailors begin to toss in your gear.

The boat was no gift. It is leaking, and bilge water will have to be removed constantly to stay afloat.

The rope mooring the party to the ship is thrown into the boat. The boat begins to drift away into the open sea. As the ship rotates toward its heading the western figure appears on the starboard side. He yells “that way”! and points toward the east.

Those in the boat include: Garrett, Calen, Baruch
(whose pet bird survived, cared for by the boy), and Sevent

There are 2 ors in the boat.

Garrett will grab an oar and motion for someone else to do the same less they sit and sink where they are. "Might do some good if we start rowing now unless you all like a good swim."

Svent looks to Garrett and the others "Ah well my good fellow I might have a way to help stop this infernal leaking." he takes out two small lodestone magnets and insights some words none can understand *Casting Mending* upon the boat to repair the leaking issue.

The boat no longer leaks enough to be a concern.

Svent "Well now we should be good. Perhaps someone can bail that water out what little there is." and after his little show he grabs the other oar and joins Garrett in rowing going the direction the sailors indicated.

Calen, seeing that the two oars are being used and the boat is no longer leaking, silently removes the water left from the boat and then quietly watches the sea as the group makes their way towards land.

While rowing to land "hopefully"

Svent "Well that certainly was a terrible experience back on the ship. I've never been treated in that manner. Though I must say it was fair luck we were evicted from the arrangement. Nice of them to give us our things back as well." he half smiles apparently in a jovial mood despite the prior treatment and living arrangements.

while also observing the weather conditions (any omens or rain clouds approaching?)

Rowing for Hours

It was a fine day for being set adrift at sea, if there is such a thing. The Orientals started the party adrift in the morning.

They were not senselessly cruel. They cut their losses and did the party members no further harm.

They were, however, going to sell you.

Right about the time Baruch gets hungry the party can see land.
Image

The party can reach the shore by sundown, perhaps sooner. It is difficult to estimates the land's distance.

With land approaching some party members must decide whether or not to get dressed in armor.
Baruch, hold your belly. The GM don't like Ocean adventures. No need to open a deli out here. ;)

Dressed in armor? Aren't we all in rags on a boat head for some strange land? I figured what we bought and attached to our Character sheets would be provided after finding some kind of town or something."

Te Kang, to Baruch: "Tweet chirp beep tweet!!!!"

Baruch: "What? Mustn't kill your winged cousins ? Oh, sorry, Te Kang, I didn't think at all. Been in a box for too long. OK I'll munch some of these soggy rations instead. Anyone else want a b***** bite ?"

and puts on his armour, but keeps the helmet secured to his belt

The kidnappers had your stuff. They gave it back after you were loaded in the boat and thus, not a threat to them.

Man, Baruch is hungry. I should have set up a random fishing table just for him.

In that case...

Calen raises his halberd, "This pointy enough?"

He will also equip his armor before he exits the boat, preferably when they hit the shallows so that if he falls he can just walk towards the beach.

Garrett puts his armor on when he stops to rest from rowing.

To Calen: "By Guth's gadlocks, that looks a mighty fine harpoon! But perhaps we will soon find other fine fare ashore"

A Landing

The party navigates the little boat to a calm spot near the shore -- away from any waves crashing on rocks.

They enter what is almost a lagoon. The water is calmer here, the tide but a ripple.

Just before they land, to their left, they notice a sea cave.
Image
On the shore there are several dead Sahaugin.
Image
A chest has been broken open and spilled.

Five crabmen strain to pick silver coins out of the sand.

Garrett notices two humanoid faces peeking down from the rock edifice above the caves. Perhaps they spy on the crabmen.

The crabmen notice the party's boat.

Calen looks over the crabmen, "Finally a battle." He jumps from the boat onto the shallow beach and strides towards them, halberd in hand.

Halberd(Specialized): [1d20+1] = 2+1 = 3, Damage: S/M[1d10+4] = 1+4 = 5, L[1d12+4] = 10+4 = 14

and the dice roller ****blocks me from an otherwise dramatic entrance in to who my character is...

Baruch: "Huh! Godless crustaceans!!" and follows Calen:

Hammer to hit: [1d20+1] = 4+1 = 5, damage vs S/M opp: [1d4+2] = 3+2 = 5

Sorry, job duties call: I've prepared a coupla more rolls if combat continues while I'm AFK:

Hammer to hit: [1d20+1] = 19+1 = 20, damage vs S/M opp: [1d4+2] = 1+2 = 3

and

Hammer to hit: [1d20+1] = 3+1 = 4, damage vs S/M opp: [1d4+2] = 4+2 = 6

Edit: now back again, but I'll let those pre-rolls stand

Svent begins making more of the strange chantish speech wiggles his fingers in a strange manner a sparkling bolt shoots out of his fingertip off at one of the crabmen *he casts Magic Missile*. He quips after casting his spell "I'll do you the favor of pre-cooking them for you."
Magic Missile[1d4 +1] = 1+1 = 2

Garrett grabs out a dagger and throws it at one of the crabmen.
Dagger Throw[1d20 +3] = 6+3 = 9 dmg[1d4] = 2

forgot the 18 Dex +3 attack adjustment, so I added it to the roll I posted it will not show that way if you look at my characters roll history.

A large horseman appears from the far side of the caves. He rides up to join the party in attacking the crabmen with his spear.

Attack: [1d20] = 2

OOC: Another undramatic entrance into the campaign.
