Usually its just one hitpoint at a time, for most games at that. Let me dig up the actual reference....
Even a child that receives one bit of praise has the ability to excel in a single talent, and those who receive regular encouragement can feel confidence, achieve success, and become leading members of society. Because they don’t believe they are worthless, they don’t need to raise a fist and have vengeance against fate or the world at large… ~Inspector Lunge

Reference says as you stated 1 HP per day of rest, as in nothing strenuous but it does say bed rest is a gain of 3 HP. But I am also citing my 2nd edition players handbook.

Right. Here is the excerpt from the 1e handbook.
"There are numerous ways to restore lost hit points. The most mundane is by
resting and allowing time to do the iob. For each day of rest, 1 hit point of
damage is restored. After 30 game days have passed, hit points accrue at
the rate of 5 per day thereafter."

well, here is the rest of the excerpt....
"The "laying on of hands" by paladins, spells, potions, and various magical devices will quickly restore many lost hit points. A wish spell can be used to restore lost hit points to several characters at once."

Admittedly though, health is a valuable commodity in the early levels; you sort of have to play it safe to live long enough for the day to see a wish spell or a round of potions to be drunk.
