Last Mumbo Jumbo Roll: [1d4] = 4

Seeing the mule free, the companions begin debating whether or not to hobble it where it is when they notice a few shapes zoom out of the night air...

Opponents' Initiative: [1d10] = 2

Wow, you guys aren't catching a break at all! Going with random assignment, and including the mule...1=Hemp, 2=mule, 3=Pursic, 4=Stanilus.

Bat-Midge Attacks: [1d4] = 3 [1d4] = 3 [1d4] = 3 [1d4] = 2

Poor Pursic, he was such a nice lad...

As the three debate what to do a number of strange, bat-like creatures zoom out of the air and attack Pursic and the unfortunate mule:

Bat-Midges' Attacks on Pursic: [1d20] = 5 [1d20] = 13 [1d20] = 9

Slapping his arms in alarm, only one of the things manages to penetrate the youth's unconventional defense. Latching onto his upper left arm, the bird-sized thing raises its ugly head and jabs a piercing proboscis into Pursic's flesh:

Damage to Pursic: [1d2] = 1

Bill, the mule, is also attacked by one of the bat-midges:
Attack on the mule: [1d20] = 7

Kicking and bucking furiously, the mule jumps around the meadow in terror and manages to avoid the bloodsucker's needle-like snout.

Screaming for help, Pursic fumbles with his knife and attempts to slash the thing at his arm:
Pursic's Attack: [1d20] = 18
Pursic's Damage: [1d4] = 2
Hitting the thing, Pursic scores it across its back, but does not kill the creature.

OK, state what you're doing and roll for attacks, damage and next round's initiative...

Hempel attacks the flapping things that are engaged with Pursic, hoping he doesn't accidentally stab the lad.

[1d20] = 9
...and he probably just stabbed the lad.
[1d4] = 2

Stanilus brings his knife to bear and swipes at one of the flying creatures, not trusting his long sword blade around his new friends. Hitting it, the thing shrieks a bit and flaps awkwardly for a few moments before coming back in for another attack...

OK, rolling initiative for you fellas...
Players' Initiative: [1d10] = 10

Flying Cretures' Initiative: [1d10] = 10

...and of course that happens! Rolling again...

Players' Tie-Breaking Initiatve: [1d10] = 10
Creatures' Tie-Breaking Initiative: [1d10] = 3

The beast that has impaled young Pursic sucks some of the youth's blood...

Automatic Sucking Damage: [1d2] = 2

Random Attacking: [1d4] = 1 [1d4] = 2 [1d4] = 4

Bat-Midges' Respective Attacks: [1d20] = 14 [1d20] = 2 [1d20] = 3

Seeming to pick their targets at random the three free bloodsuckers dive in at Hempel, Bill the mule and Stanilus. Landing upon Hempel's collar, one of them jabs its appendage into the base of the unfortunate thief's neck and (Proboscis Damage to Hempel: [1d2] = 2) causes the man grievous harm! Stiffening like he was stuck by an assassin's stiletto, the Felderman screams in agony. Reaching back, the thief can't reach the beast!

Feeling faint, and about to drop, Pursic tries once more to kill the thing latched onto his arm...
Pursic's attack: [1d20] = 3
Unfortunately, the young man is frustrated by the purchase that it has gained from its sharp claws.

OK, go ahead again. Don't forget to roll next round's initiative this time!

Seeing that Pursic is in dire need of help, Stanilus tries for the Bat-Midge attached to him & Scores a Hit:

Initiative:[1d10] = 1

Hempel (2/6) backs roughly into a tree, hoping to dislodge the creature just enough that he can pierce it with his dagger.

I'm not entirely sure what to roll for this action, but a d20 is probably useful, right?
[1d20] = 5
Oh dear. That automatic blood sucking damage is gonna hurt.

Killing the one on Pursic's arm, Stanilus rushes over to Hempel's defense. Though he looks confused, Pursic follows the older man's lead and also does what he can to aid the thief.

Creatures' Initiative: [1d10] = 6

Reaching Hempel, Pursic tries to use his blood-slick dagger in some way:
Pursic's attack: [1d20] = 14
Pursic's Damage: [1d4] = 3

Cutting into the creature, the boy's hit proves fatal (it was the one Stanilus had wounded just moments before). Finally grabbing ahold of the thing, Hempel flings it away- a wild look in the his eyes. The former city dweller had never seen, nor heard of such things back home.

Stanilus can still attack the remaining two pests. Roll for initiative afterwards.

Now Stanilus attempts to help the Mule with the other 2 bloodsucking pests and:

Die Rolls for:
To Hit: [1d20] = 13
Dagger (To Damage): [1d4] = 2

Initiative for Next round of fighting off Bat-Midges : [1d10] = 1
Dungeon Master : Guido's Keep on the Borderlands & the Hills of Horror & Chaos (1st Ed D&D) :
1A: The Inheritance (1st Ed D&D)

Player:
Erico Caravellino - Thief : Elphand Adventures (ACKS Wilderlands - On Hold)

Responding to the fighter's attack the remaining creatures focus their attention on the Varner:
Bat-Midge Attacks on Stanilus: [1d20] = 17 [1d20] = 4
The uninjured one sweeps past the man's slashes and lands upon his back while the creature that had been struck flapped around in confusion. Digging its claws into the fighter's tunic, the attacker jabs its proboscis near Stanilus' spine (Bat-Midge Damage: [1d2] = 2).

Bellowing in pain, Stanilus now knows what his friend had been suffering just a moment before.

Creatures' Initiative: [1d10] = 3

New Round:

Moving over to the warrior, Pursic attempts to return the favor done and dislodge the thing from Stanilus' back:
Pursic's Attack: [1d20] = 2
Still a bit woozy from bloodloss, the youth is unsuccessful.

OK, finish up this round's attacks. Stanilus took 2 HP of damage. I now have the characters at Stanilus: 3/7, Hempel: 2/6, Pursic: 1/5.

Hurt and angry, Hempel goes after the bat-midge that Pursic isn't attacking, waving his dagger in wide, wild sweeps, as though trying to swat a fly.

Initiative: [1d10] = 6
Attack: [1d20] = 9
Damage: [1d4] = 3

It is not an effective strategy.

I guess it's my turn? If so:

Trying to get at the Bat-Midge on his back Stanilus' attempt proves futile:

To Hit: [1d20] = 3

The injured creature flaps away to lick its wounds, while the last one sucks some more of Stanilus' blood. As the fighter failed to dislodge the thing is get a contented slurp of the man's precious life-essence.
Automatic Slurpage: [1d2] = 2

The fighter is feeling woozy, and is about to collapse!

Initiative: [1d10] = 1

Another Automatic Slurpage: [1d2] = 1

And, unfortunately, the man falls victim to the thing! Drained of enough blood, Stanilus falls to the ground, unconscious and unaware. Avoiding being crushed, the bloodsucker detaches itself and lazily flies away...having sated itself and ensured its survival for the next few weeks.

With their companion unconscious and unresponsive, Pursic and Hempel debate what to do. After collecting the mule, they drag Stanilus near the trees and establish a camp, of sorts.

OK, you're going to have to figure out what to do. Stanilus is at zero HP, Pursic is at 1, and Hempel is at 2! It will take 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep and meditation for Pursic to get to a point where he can cast 4 cure minor wounds orisons.

On the bright side, you guys get 14 EXP for Stanilus and 13 EXP for Hempel for killing the midget stirges.

"Felder's fleas! What are those things? No wonder cities have walls around them—you can't take two steps in these blasted wilds without some horrorible thing trying to tuck in on a bit of flesh. Remind me, when we get back to town, to make nice with the local thuggery and never leave the security of city streets, again."

Hempel tends to everyone's wounds as they make camp. He really wishes he'd splurged on a tent, right about now. He'd put his hands on one, but had picked up some extra climbing gear, instead. He tries, with his extremely limited sense of tactics, to find as defensible a spot as he can, as close as possible to their present location.

"Pursic, do you think Stanilus is stable enough to leave to rest? You look like you could use a lie-down, as well. I'll keep watch."

Hempel considers borrowing Stanilus' sword. He's not proficient with it, but it would make him feel more secure in the dark woods to have a larger piece of steel nearby. Instead, he takes some time to find a good hiding spot, so that he can disappear at the first sign of trouble and try to surprise any interlopers.

Pursic considers Hemp's proposal and agrees that the Felderman makes sense. There was only five or six bells until dawn, and the youth figured that he could regain his strength and capacity to cast spells with sufficient rest.

Tending their wounds first, the youth then drips a bit of water into Stanilus' mouth and wraps the man warmly in blankets and clothing. Ensconcing himself between the roots of a gnarled oak tree, Pursic reassures himself that Hempel will guard them sufficiently and promptly falls asleep.

The mule settles down again, secure in the presence of the men.

Mumbo Jumbo Roll: [1d100] = 54

Dawn comes, with no further encounters or mishaps.

Each of them regained a single HP after the fight, and pick up another HP with dawn. At that point I have Stanilus at 2/7, Hempel at 4/6 and Pursic at 3/5.

After meditating for an hour and gathering the requisite energies, Pursic uses his arts to partially heal Stanilus and his self (casts three cure minor wounds on Stanilus and one upon his self).

That puts Stanilus at 5/7, Hempel at 4/6 and Pursic at 4/5. Unfortunately, you guys are about 9 hours behind the others and will have to wait for them to make some progress. :(

Phew! Can't believe we made it through the night!

So we should sit tight until we can sync up with the other players?

All right, I've moved you both to the main thread. Each character regains a single HP for resting through the night. Hope you integrate well withthe others!
