23. Right Branch (Strom, Aric, Shan, Fim, Kaltar only)

#1 Post by dmw71 »

Strom, and Aric standing tall behind him, can immediately see that there are two side branches on the right hand side of this right branch, and the passage does appear as if it will bend back and connect further north, where Ewell is leading the other group.

Strom pauses as he approaches the first of the side branches. (PM forthcoming)

Without the full benefit of a light source, Strom finds it difficult to make out what, if anything is down this first side passage, so he waves for the torch to be brought closer. The chef hands it to Aric who extends it forward, just enough for the paladin to see.

Almost instantly, a pair of giant spiders (s2, s4), with smaller bodies but long, hair legs with a reach easily covering six feet in diameter, pounce upon the party.

They - amazingly - did not surprise, and I have asked Strom for an initiative roll (1d10), but I will accept the first one posted from the group. Only Strom and Aric are in a position to engage in melee, but everyone should feel free to state actions for round 1.

"Yep, there they are, just like I said. Here they come."
Actually ...They would not have surprised us because I would have told them to expect spiders before we went in....i have been to this spot, but not really any further.heres an inititiative...
init [1d10] = 6
Shannigans hopes the warriors rip these spiders a new one. He holds his magic missile until a more accurate count of the spiders can be assertained. If both Strom and Aric get bit, then he will release the MMissile at the end of the round.
Ill roll here in a second, roller site is screwy.

Strom was warned ahead but the sight of the spiders still sent a chill down his spine. He keeps his shield up high as he slashes with his sword.

Attack:
[1d20+2] = 12+2 = 14
Damage:
[2d4+3] = 7+3 = 10

If Aric drops the torch in order to engage in combat, Fimmion will pick it back up and wave the spiders away from with it if necessary.

"Die bug beast!" exclaims Aric, slashing with his sword.

A good omen hopefully for first roll. Do you do anything special for natural 20?
Edit: Read up on criticals. Here is my second roll:

Surprise was still a possibility. Consider a haunted house. You know what you're getting yourself into when you enter, and can even anticipate from when and from where something might be coming from, but they (haunted houses) are still successful because surprise is... well, a surprise, even when expected.

The spiders act just before the warriors are able to strike. The first spider (s2) on Aric somehow manages to land awkwardly when it pounced down to attack and misses terribly. The second (s4), however, is able to sneak its bite past Strom's defenses (-4).

In retaliation, Aric (+20xp) and Strom both land solid, successful blows against the large arachnids and manage to quickly end the threat. (108xp each)

I will need a saving throw from Strom.

Aric / tunnel

The Iron Tribes barbarian scans ceiling and walls for more of the spiders. He realizes then from Shannigans' comment that the spiders were poisonous. Aric flips over the corpse with his blade and looks for the venom sacks. If possible he will coat his sword in the poison, then his knife.

I'm going to have to admit, I've never had a player attempt this before. I will look into the logistics of this and respond again sometime tomorrow.

I need a decision as to your next course of action. I also need a saving throw from Strom.

It takes several minutes, but after some careful dissection, the barbarian is able to locate the gland containing the spider's venom (not poison).

Given your barbarian background and knowledge, I'll assume you'll know how to safely transfer the venom from the gland to the weapon itself. The coating will be in place for a single attack, hit or miss. From Gwillt's experience, there was a delayed onset, and also a missed saving throw, so even a successful hit may not result in the expected results (unless you stick around and wait until the affects kick in to see whether or not the creatures saving throw was successful or not).

As he finishes coating sword and knife blade with poison, Aric mutters: "Not down this passage, if this be where the spiders came from. Mayhap the next right up?"

The barbarian considers that treasure from past victims could very well be down this passage, but he has an aversion to poisonous monsters.

Is this what you're going to do?

"No talk of the spiders bothering Ohare if I remember correctly, so lets take this more western passage, just incase there are more. I think this left wall circles around to where I threw some oils. Yea, hug this left wall as we go more of a north-northeastern direction. Good. Good. Careful now, more spiders maybe, and I have no idea whats up ahead in that direction. "

i know that was probably hard to discern what my intent is. So, .....but im thinking of heading in a 2oclock direction?

Aric lets Shan go ahead of him as the man seems to be familiar with the passage. The barbarian puts both hands on the hilt of his sword.

Shannigans assumes the point and elects to bypass the spider-infested first passage and leads the group northeast along the second passage. This second tunnel begins east, bends northeast after approximately 30 feet, then turns east again. The halfling peeks around the corner and notices that the passage opens up into a cavern. The depth of the passage extends beyond the range of the hobbit's infravision, but Shannigans is able to notice troglodyte activity. The lack of overpowering stench would indicate that your presence remains unknown to the swamp creatures.

We can easily correct for this. I read your "2 o'clock" as being you intended to hug the left wall until reaching and taking that second passage. If you meant to pass the second passage as well and continue north, we'll make that happen by saying you scouted the passageway only.

---

Shannigans returns to the main passage and reports his discovery of more troglodytes down the second passageway.
