PM sent, and you do see Husker triple time back to the party. But I am going to let him tell you what he saw. ;)

Ceric, witnessing the hastily retreating thief, begins to deliberately advance towards the intersection, allowing the thief to pass behind him.

"To arms!" he calls out, eagerly awaiting the unknown threat.

Felgorian stops his investigations and quickly positions his sword and shield. Not sure what he is preparing for. But, no sense taking chances.

"Just the one?" asks Coenbeorht "I think 'tween all of us we can handle it."

The halfling readies one of his axes to lob at the spider as soon as he sees it in range.

The Thumping heartbeat of the Steam pipes is the only sound.

Then you hear a clicking sound.

Click Click Click CLick Click Click

Around the corner is a metal encased spider-thing. It walks golem like in steady, measure steps towards the party. (the metal is the same metal as the bronze like metal that the steampipes are made of.)

Brother Meldred looks down the spider. "Well, I've seen many a spider in my days. Even heard about hte variety that is a bit larger than the rest. But one made out of metal? This is surely new! Now, let's have at this beast and be on with your quest!"

Brother Meldred will continue to stand his ground and prepare to engage the spider.

Beya; the worried Mage (Joining the herd with the Bolded personal description! :) )

Beya; standing close behind the brave Cleric and angry Halfling; pulls out some spell components while keeping a frightened eye on the mechanical spider moving ever-closer. "Well....what are we doing; standing or fighting? I have one spell that might damage it; but I'd hate to waste it if we're planning on running!"; she says to her companions.

OOC: If we elect to stand and fight; Beya's gonna cast Magic Missile at the thing

Coenbeorht, pissed off halfling barbarian

"I'll lob an axe at it. Might get lucky."

And so he shall, when the spider-thing is in reach.

To hit with thrown hand axe: [1d20] = 19, damage: [1d6+3] = 6+3 = 9

ooc: Holy S***! Now if that doesn't hit it, or harm it I'm getting the heck out of dodge, pronto!

Ceric, momentarily taken aback at the sight of a metal spider, stands his ground firmly. Shield raised before him, he waits for the creature to come to him and lashes out at the abomination with his sword at his first opportunity.

Normal Sword [1d20+3] = 5+3 = 8[1d8+3] = 7+3 = 10

Husker the thief is going to skulk about, hiding behind one of the columns for a bit. After a round or two, he will attempt to maneuver around the beast. That is, if it comes into melee range.

Brother Meldred will try to engage it with his mace

(I forgot to add in the +1 to hit but I don't think it mattered)

[1d20] = 8 Mace [1d6] = 6

I dont have the books with me at work, but what is the melee/missile rules in Becmi? ie if a hammer is thrown, not sure we want to be going in with swords?

ooc: You just make a normal attack roll, using your DEX modifier (if any). The distance to target may add in a bonus or penalty (the GM will take care of that). Damage is the same as in melee (i.e. you still add the STR modifier to dmg).

I meant the idea of missile weapons not having a target, so melee'ers are random victims of friendly fire.

ooc: ah, with that I can't help ya. I don't know what the BD&D rules for shooting into melee are, only AD&D.

ok, (First off, sorry for the delay, appears that every 4th week work will bury me.)

Still outside of close range, the Ax buries itself into the spider-thing. It turns and flees, surprisingly quick you do see a cog wheel on the ground, as the spider thing flees to the north. (Let me know if you chase it) the hand to hand combat is moot since the spider turned and fled before getting into range.
