Back to the Outpost

#1 Post by Rex »

Early morning of the 12th of Larane. Summer. Weather is cloudy, currently drizzling. A short journey begins.

Everyone sets out on their short journey, spending the night of the 12th in the village of Meldun, the last inhabited village along your journey. Nothing noteworthy occurs on the 12th.

Everyone sets out on the 13th, a little more alert and cautious as you travel into the wilds. Nothing unexpected occurs along the journey but you do get throughly wet as the day proceeds and the rain picks up in the afternoon. Travel once off the Genin Trail is very slow with the wagon, with lots of clearing, pushing, and pulling going on. About an hour before sunset it is decided that you won't make the outpost today and camp is made for the night. With the memory of Orcs from the last time in this vale, it is decided to have a cold wet camp.

The morning of the 14th dawns drier, if still dark and cloudy. Once again you get moving, very slowly. About midday you arrive at the outpost and are greeted by Volin and Etiri.

Arngeir grins at the two dwarves

"Is good to be back, and not have to climb cliff to get in. We get wagon in, get warm, and you show what you've been doing, yes? Oh, we have new friends, from Azadmere, sent by the king. "

Lharzin is grateful that they were able to clear the way and that her wagon with its kitchen, anvils, and alembics has arrived intact. She bows deeply and respectfully as she is introduced. To Eitri she says "your aid is already of great service, friend smith. I have birds to carry an update to the king once we have discussed further here." No one has mentioned Volin, so she looks him over before speaking. Does he have vigils or signs that might reveal his Occupations to her?

Volin was one of the PC's for a while, now NPC, Shek-Pvar are not common in Azadmere so he would be known to her by name if not having met. He is a young member of Clan Grimshald, a clan of alchemists. He is a Peleahn mage with some Alchemy skill (72 ML, just equivalent to a human master of average quality but considerably better than Lharzin).

Ingram's actions for the first day:

He takes a quick look inside the outpost, just to confirm the layout.
Exits from the top level and surveys the area from above.
Looks for a pathway that a horse could take from ground level to the top of the hill.

Eitiri

"We will talk soon then. But first I will show our new comers around the outpost. A solid, if ancient design, we have made excellent progress in our repairs."

He leads the way through the outpost explaining as you go.

#2, front door. Eltiri explaining, "Front door is working again, brilliant work whoever built it. Even I can't tell it is there from the outside and I know it's there."

Volin adds, "Near impregnable, it is enchanted Pseudo stone. Would require magic of the highest order to damage it. No tool we have here could even mar it. Broke the haft on the 12 pound sledge hammer trying to. Deformed the metal hammer head, never scratched the stone."

#3, portcullis and murder holes. Eltiri, "Doors still need to be made and installed. Portcullis is working and in fine condition, enameled Khuzdul iron. New chains and winch above, this was the biggest project we have tackled and took the most work. But it now works fine. Near impossible to lift without the winch, must weigh close to 1000 pounds."

#4, storage area. Volin, "We haven't done anything here yet except store supplies. Needs a new door and maybe some way to keep vermin from crawling in the drain."

#5, stables. Volin, "Not much done here either. Needs a door and the dividers for the stalls built still. We have brought in feed for the animals and muck it out daily."

#6 and #13, Hall and water closet. Eltiri, "The front door has been replaced and can be barred. Could be improved, it is just plain oak slabs, no binding. We have a passable table and benches. Curtain to the water closest and a brass piss pot in there. We still need the other 5 doors built, 6 if you count the water closest. Fire wood stacked and the chimney cleared. The fireplace works great now."

#7, bunk room. Volin, "Pretty sure this held 4 Khuzdul sized bunks based on the debris we cleaned out. Have just been using our bedrolls on top of some evergreen boughs for now. As is I think we can get the 4 male Khuzdul in here."

#8, officers room. Volin, "The commander of the outpost lived in here. All cleaned out. Probably fit 3 men in here, maybe 4. Looking at everyone now, maybe the two women folk would be best. If so the last 3 men would need to stay in the hall maybe?"

#9, stairway. Eltiri, "just some minor clean up, all good."

#10, well. Eltiri, "New rope and bucket. Water is good, we boiled it at first but got lazy and we haven't gotten sick yet."

#11 and #12, kitchen and pantry. Volin, "My favorite part of the outpost. Nicely designed for ventilation and the fireplace. It is all working again. Stacked firewood. Needs a new pantry door and a better workstation, mine is poor at best. I have it stocked with the essentials as far as pots and what not. Could use some more."

#14, ladder and back door. Volin, "We haven't tried repairing the metal ladder, it is weak in places and dangerous to use. We will need to figure out how to get it out of the stone without damaging it. We have a simple wooden ladder we built that is working fine for now. The door is pseudo stone like the front door. Equally as difficult to damage. works good and can be barred from inside."

#15, winch and murder holes. Eltiri, "All cleaned up, working winch and plenty of stones for the murder holes. Enough space we could build some weapon racks on the walls and use it as an armory if need be."

#16, defensive passages and arrow slits. Eltiri, "All cleaned up. We could use some crossbows and bolts to leave at the 2 internal and 4 external arrow slits. 2 or more at each would be best but that will be for later I assume. I have spent time studying the outside from the 4 external slits and the ground outside. Anyone attacking the front door has a serious problem, especially if Volin is in one of these slits. He demonstrated his battle magic in the woods one day, from here it would be deadly."

The area above is wooded (25-50% tree cover). Scattered rocks of various size, including some quite large. From a defensive point the top entryway is well concealed but you can't see out to know what is around you exiting and could be blocked from above by putting something heavy on top of the door if someone knows the location. Best as a escape hatch not normal use entry way.

The route up the cliff face is more a goat path. A donkey or mule can make it for sure. Riding horse maybe if sturdy footed and disciplined. Nothing a larger horse could get up safely. Looking around there are a couple of pretty large trees that maybe a crane/winch could be built off to lift a horse up. Those who have been here before tell you that there is a place about a half mile further north where a cart and horses can easily get up out of the chasm/vale and up on top on the same side as the outpost. You can check it out and nothing has been up recently other then small deer sized animals but with some clearing a cart and horse or large horse could use it easily enough.

Beryl

Beryl will introduce himself to Volin and Eltiri. "Sounds like you have accomplished a lot. How long have you been working on it?"

He will take Sorkin Blue (his mule) to the stables.

After making sure that Sorkin Blue is secure he will take a slow walk through each room using his Engineering, Woodcraft and Metalcraft skills to confirm he agrees with the assessment as given by Volin.

Volin is someone Lharzin has long desired to meet. While she was sent to temper her inner fire, he was taught to utilize it. Now, in meeting him, perhaps she can learn from him and his example...

She talks to them about being the Speaker of Stone and that she wished to spend time in the most untouched areas to learn what she may of the Outpost's memories of its own long-past. She is earnest in this with Volin especially, and spends the first day(s) doing this before newer memories begin to build amidst the stone's experiences.

She spends breakfast and dinner each day with the others, encouraging them to talk about what they wish for the outpost and what they think of Eitri's assessments of the rooms. She will send a letter by pigeon back to the King after the group decides direction and needs.

Arngeir is impressed with all the work that has been done so far. He is happy to spend his time here helping out with whatever needs fixing up and letting the dwarves do their dwarfy thing.

He is interested in getting a better feel for the land and its layout hereabouts. He also wants to spend some time doing things to improve his condition skill.

Beryl agrees with their assessments. They have made obvious progress on the most important needs but there is much more to be done. For something abandoned for almost 1500 years it is in remarkable shape.

Lharzin, could I get 3 Skill rolls (1d100) for her speak with stones and an exact location you intend to try first.

Arngeir will wander around outside some, inspecting the area and getting a fell for the land. We will address his Condition skill on the 20th when I next award SMPs.

Algrim, a hunt sounds like an excellent option, it also meets Ingram and Arngeir's gather info on the land actions. Do you want to combine them and hunt together in any way?

Beryl

"Lharzin if you want the lowest point, perhaps I could lower you down into the well? There will not have been much interaction recently and there is the chance to get to stones further down in the earth. Of course I have no idea if that is a good thing or not. Thoughts?"

From Beryl's knowledge this is an excellent idea. From how Lharzin's power actually works within the rules, maybe-maybe not. The stone she specifically "talks" to to can only relate back what it has directly experienced through one word answers (usually yes/no) to Lharzin's questions. Critical Success may expand on this but that is how it will work in practice. So the stones at the bottom of the well likely have not interacted very much with anything other than a bucket, unless someone dropped something down the well and Lharzin thinks to ask the right question. The key, as I think shaidar has learned with his version of this Talent is in knowing what questions to ask.

Arngeir

Arngeir is happy to do some hunting with Algrim if that is what Algrim wants.

As part of learning the land he's particularly interested in learning the best routes to approach the outpost without being seen by those on the trail.
