Exploring Otari - Locales and Locals
Blades for Glades - primary smithy in town; Carmen Rajani is the owner; kinda surly but has a variety of weapons.
Crow's Casks - potions and such; Magiloy is the owner.
Dawnflower Library - temple to Sarenrae and sells scrolls and various other magical things; Vandy Banderdash is in charge; Khawla has met her.
Odd Stories - wizardly place that sells spells and scrolls; Morlibunt is the head wizard.
Otari Market - you can find just about anything there; Keeleno Lathenar is the dour, humorless owner of the Market.
Wrin's Wonders - all sorts of adventuring gear to be had; Wrin Sivinxi is the owner.
A Day Out and About
Dawnflower Library (15)
Khawla leaves the Rockfish and walks down the road leading to the library/temple of Sarenrae. She is greeted by an acolyte at the door and escorted into a side conference room with high ceilings and the musty smell of books. A small fire burns in a small fireplace; there are no books or other flammable materials within 10 feet of it.
After a few minutes the acolyte returns with a tray upon which sits a small tea pot (steaming at the mouth), two plain cups and a tiny plate of cookies. Coming in behind her is Vandy Banderdash, whom Khawla has met before.
"Well now, back so soon? How are ya, deary?" asks the cheery Halfling, taking a the teapot and pouring two cups of dark tea. She hands one to Khawla, takes a cookie, and sits in a chair closest to the fireplace. "What brings you to the Dawnflower this fine morning?"
Otari Market (11)
Tuga ventures out of the Rockfish and heads north along the main road through town. He passes a lot of folks out and about who give me a nod and a "Good morn" as he walks. He crosses a bridge over the Osprey River and into a large open area strewn about with stalls, tents, and carts; all open for business and some already having patrons. Near the open market is a log-cabin with a sign that simply reads: Trading Post. Out in the open-air market, Tuga sees a cart with all sorts of colorful scarfs and hats, a tent with flaps open and music coming from within, a mule and wagon with various pieces of armor displayed, and a man hawking "boots and shoes as fine as you'll find in Absalom!"
Crook's Nook (10)
Sore and still somewhat tired, Tumbler walks out of the Rockfish and heads north, following the same road Tuga took a minute or two earlier. He is no more out of the bed and breakfast when he spies a large wooden structure spanning the Osprey River. There is no sign over the open door, but Tumbler can see straight through the building to the opposite side. It appears to be a 2-story bridge over the river. Hearing clinking sounds from within and voices, Tumbler walks over to the door and peers inside.
There is a large bar and a common room with tables and chairs and a fireplace which is being tended by a man wearing an apron. Leaning against the bar is a human woman looking as if she just rolled out of bed. Spying Tumbler looking in, she stifles a yawn with one hand and beckons him forward with the other.
"Early for a drink, isn't it?" she says, her voice somewhat still husky from sleep. She reaches for a foaming mug off the bar and takes a big gulp.
Into the Woods
When asking about the shortest way to the woods, Allean and Gurkan are told to take the road to the Dawnflower Library and then take the trail through the church cemetery to the woods. And so they do. They are only a few minutes behind Khawla and find the library to be quiet with few attendants this morning.
When they say they are just passing through on the way to the woods, an acolyte leads them to the door which offers access to the outside cemetery. The acolyte gives a few nervous glances at Lulu, but doesn't really speak about her nervousness around the creature. Once outside, Allean and Gurkan take the meandering path through the cemetery and eventually find themselves on the ridge above the town. They follow the trail and come to a fork in the road. Seeing the forest ahead, they take the left path and this leads them to a rather odd site: a large ring of standing stones, nearly 12' high, stand like sentinels around the shores of a shallow pond (3 on the map).
A bent old woman, quite short and somewhat disheveled, is prodding the ground around one of the standing stones. "Come to pay respects, have ya?" she calls over her shoulder, not turning to even look at you. "Approach if ya will. I ain't gonna bite ya!" she says, cackling with laughter.

Re: Exploring Otari - Locales and Locals
The merchant chuckles and bows his head slightly, appreciating the Gnome's humor. "My good fellow, those traps will be something to catch the eye of the market's owner, Keeleno. He's always in the market for traps, especially what may be considered 'wolf' traps. You may not know this, but wolves killed his wife years ago and he's always looking for pelts or ways to get them. Best not mention his wife, though. He's a fiery one."ateno wrote: ↑Thu Nov 09, 2023 6:12 pm A Day Out and About
Otari Market (11)
Tuga - "Well luckily these shakes the 3 three traps "did not pierce the leather or I would but a pair, Thank Yee I will let my friends know that your here. Walks over and looks at the wares. "Do you know anyone that might be in the market for there? Used only once! Har Har.
Tuga thanks the merchant and wanders over to look at the scarfs and hats. The person selling these smiles and nods at him as he approaches.
"Good morn to you, my friend. Need you a hat or scarf? All are hand sewn and blessed so as to never fray or tear. I am Ifan Terro, at your service."
Into the Woods...
While Gurkan is hugging his lizard...Alle speaks with the old woman.
We have come to gather herbs and enjoy the beauty of nature. I am a healer and I need some herbs to help the injured. What is this place? Do you tend this grove? Are you a healer?
The older woman chuckles, and shakes all over, saying, "Well, this here place is Stone Ring Pond...not a very mystical name, mind you, but it will suffice. And yes, I'm its caretaker you could say. I am Worliwynn, but most folk just call me Wynn. I've been known to offer a poultice or two, or brew a tea for ailments. Why are you and your man...and your, erm, lizard, here my dear?"
Sitting by the dock of the bay...
Elwood looks at Brelda and smiles "Dunno, was kind figrin' I'd eat it meself. What's yer offer?"
Brelda crosses her arms, not in frustration or anger, but rather out of habit. "Well, since you are using my fishing pole, technically, half of that fish belongs to me." She smiles again, looking tired and frayed. "Maybe if you catch a couple more, we can have us a nice lunch."
She blushes slightly, but maybe it's just the cold wind off the river.
Otari Market...
Tuga - Hello, a full billed leather hat, in my size? Could I see anything like that?
Terro nods and shows Tuga three nice leather hats "This one is made of tanned deer leather, while this one is made from beaver. It will keep your head very warm in the winter. And this one is all the way from the highlands of Ustalav." The third cap is of a leather so black it has a bluish sheen.
"I suppose that Keeleno, is in that building." Tugo says as he looks at the selection.
"Ah yes, he rarely leaves except to go hunting."
Dawnflower Library...
Khawla - "Thanks for the tea. I was wondering if you know anything of the area under the town? It seems it must have been built on the ruins of something else perhaps?"
Vandy blows on her cup and sips and says, "I can't say that I do, but I suspect there are some old sea caves underneath this town. Most of Absalom is riddled with 'em. Been delving in them I suspect, yes? Find anything useful? Any old relics or religious antiquities?"
Crook's Nook...
Tumbler chuckles and starts the dance. He isn't sure about the exact slang here in town but he tries anyway, Never too early fer' a beer. Me, I'm all charm, drink just helps me talents shine through.. He looks around the room in a casual way. I'm in town for some iron, was hoping to see the Blacksmith named Prince. You know em.?
The woman smiles slightly and takes another sip of beer. "Indeed, I know the Princess like the back of my hand." She raises her hand and looks at it, then moves her fingers in a way Tumbler has seen before. "She is always searching for new shipments of iron, which can be hard to come by in such a small port."
She takes another long pull from her mug, draining it, and sits it down on the counter...and belches loud enough to wake the dead! "Ah! That's damn good beer. I can take you to the Princess, if you like."
Tumbler -

Alle
Well Wynn, It's good to meet you. I am Alle and this is Gurkin. I am here to gather herbs and I could use your help and training if you would. I am an Herbalist from another place. I was ship wrecked here and lost all my herbs and poultices when the ship went down. i am trying to gather enough to restock and maybe make a few coins to get home. I am also looking for a couple of straight strong white Oak staves that can be shaped into Long Bows. Another hobby of mine. Could you teach me a couple of poultices that can be made from local plants? It would be much appreciated.

Re: Exploring Otari - Locales and Locals
The Dawnflower Library
Khawla - "Some sort of old temple I think."
After Khawla describes the temple as best she can, Vandy sits forward, cupping her mug of tea with both hands, looking at her feet. "Sounds like a shrine to Gozreh, god of nature and the fury of the ocean. Did anyone drink of the water in the silver bowl?"
Otari Market and Lodge
After Tuga pays a single gold piece for the black cap, he puts it on, thanks the merchant, and heads into the lodge to see Keeleno. Tuga goes to the door and knocks...and the door opens slightly to his hand.
Warmth and the smell of burning wood greets Tuga as he sticks his head inside to look around. Various items sit on tables and on shelves, while a large counter is arrayed with various bottles of all shapes and sizes. In many of them, Tuga can see some type of claw or feather or even more suspicious looking things. Someone coughs and Tuga looks in the direction of the fireplace. Sitting by the fire is a man wrapped in a woolen blanket. When he sees Tuga, he throws the blanket off and stands up, swaying. His face is covered with a sheen of sweat and he grabs onto the mantle of the fireplace to steady himself.
"How...how can I help you this morning?" his voice is gruff and he grabs a steaming mug from a small table beside his chair and sips on it, coughing again. "Did Vandy send you?"
The Stone Pond
Gurkan answers Worliwynn's query with a sigh. well, i guess city life hasn't turned out exactly how we thought, not that it was our choice but it is what it is. Lulu can take care of herself and i think she'll do good out here, better than going and clearing out the caves below Otary as we have been doing anyways
"Oh, well then. You're setting her loose on the island...is that it? Well...I hope she is able to survive here. There are no others of her kind around here. She's from the Mwangi Expanse, isn't she? Why not take her back there?"
Fishing on the River
Elwood chuckles and beams a big smile "Deal!" and he gives the fish over and goes right back to fishing to see if he can catch any more. His luck is good today and he lands two more of roughly the same size, and hauls them up the bank where Brelda is waiting. She offers her sad smile and touches Elwood on the arm. "Let's get these cleaned and cooked, okay?"
Elwood and Brelda walk back to the Rowdy Rockfish and she fetches a large bucket and lays the fish out on a table nearby to scale them and gut them. As she works, she looks up at Elwood several times, smiles, but really doesn't say much unless prompted.
Crook's Nook
My thanks Tumbler says and falls behind, following the woman into a side room where she asks him to shut the door. Tumbler notes there is another woman in the room, sitting behind a small desk. His guide strolls over to the desk and sits on the edge of it. She smiles at Tumbler and says plainly, "Convince the Princess, and myself, that you are not a spy and we won't have you gutted and thrown in the river to feed the fish and crabs."
The woman behind the table also gives Tumbler a long look, but she isn't smiling.

you know of the expanse! Have you been there?...
yes i'm conflicted about this, i think being out here would be better for her, i'm sure she can fend for herself and survive but she'll be lonely and the colonist might be uneasy about her, i think this new world is confusing ...
it would be good if i could take her back like i said, ending up here wasn't by choice, we were fortunate enough to have the Diobel navy rescue us from a pirate ship that capture us, but to get back to the expanse, hopefully i can earn enough coin to earn passage back

Tumbler lets out a sigh. I ain't got a clue how to do that, 'specially considering I ain't even sure who I would be spying fer. Names Tumbler, outta HighHelm. Trained lock maker, smith and lockpick. Didn't set out fer this village but fates, the seas and some pirates carried me here. Only person I knew from here was a man named Crave. Asked fer me help with his dying breath.hedgeknight wrote: ↑Fri Nov 17, 2023 2:56 pm

He takes a moment.
I came in here with only whats on me back. Needed a meal and a bed so I got mixed up with a job scouting under the Fishery. Turns out there is a whole lotta trouble under there. Now its ta' day after and I'm still skint. There may be loot down in those tunnels but I need gear up if I want to make it back. So I'm lookin' fer something that a person of my skills can do to make a few coin.
He holds out his arms and blows out a puff of air. And thats all I got.

Otari Market and Lodge
Keleeno says nothing.
"How long did he have this on his stands?"
Again, no response.
Seeing he is unsteady, Tuga asks, "Are you I'll? Do you need a doctor, can I help?"
"Pfah! It's just a cold," Keleeno growls. "What do you want? Looking for something in particular?"
Keleeno breaks into a fit of coughing and wheezing, gritting his teeth, holding onto a small table to keep from falling.
The Dawnflower Library
"No, no one drank from it. Do you think it was blessed by Gozreh?" Khawla says.
Vandy nods and sits back in her chair. "Oh yes indeed, I do! The waters of Gozreh are said to have magical properties, healing most like. When are you going back? I should like a flask of that water." She gives Khawla a wink.
The Stone Pond
Gurkan's eyes light up when he hears the Mwangi Expanse mentioned and he begins talking very excitedly and rapidly.

Worliwynn chuckles and holds up her pudgy hands. "Ho ho, slow down! Yer chattering on more than a squirrel!"
The woman looks at Lulu and smiles and then back to Gurkan. "I've never trod the Expanse, but I've heard tell of it from those who have. And a pirate ship brought ya here, eh? What were ya doing on the sea in the first place? Mighty unusual for a Mwangi man to leave his home. There's a tale to be told, I'd reckon. Would you and your lady friends like some tea? I picked the mushrooms fresh this morning?"
Crook's Nook
He takes a moment and notices a brief glance between the women at the mention of Crave.
I came in here with only whats on me back. Needed a meal and a bed so I got mixed up with a job scouting under the Fishery. Turns out there is a whole lotta trouble under there. He holds out his arms and blows out a puff of air. And thats all I got.
"Well ain't that a cryin' shame," says a man's voice behind Tumbler. The Dwarf turns to see a fellow leaning against the wall, who wasn't there a moment ago; how did he get there? The man is slicing a green apple with a little knife and stuffing the slices into his mouth, chewing silently. "What me to carve him up?" the man asks, continuing to slice his apple.
This time both women smile. The one sitting behind the desk says, "Not yet. I like his story, don't you Mera?"
The woman who led Tumbler in here nods and crosses her arms. "I sure do, and I have just the thing for you to earn...a few coins, Tumbler."
The man chuckles around another bite of apple, and "Mera" continues. "There is a woman, a girl really, who is a prisoner in the Garrison, and I want her out. I need her special...talents. Your specialty is locks, am I right? It should be little trouble for you to break her out, yes? All you have to do is get inside the Garrison and...unlock her cell."
"As long as Lard-Ass doesn't catch ya," the man says with a wink.
The woman behind the desk smiles and says, "Captain Lardus Longsaddle is the leader of the Otari Guard. Best not cross paths with him, Master Locksmith."
Mera claps her hands together and stands up, effectively ending the meeting. "Twenty gold for this simple task. Are you in?"
"Can you tell by my new hat? He hee," Tuga says, taking it off as he enters the lodge.Sitting by the fire is a man wrapped in a woolen blanket. When he sees Tuga, he throws the blanket off and stands up, swaying. His face is covered with a sheen of sweat and he grabs onto the mantle of the fireplace to steady himself.

yes i'm conflicted about this, i think being out here would be better for her, i'm sure she can fend for herself and survive but she'll be lonely and the colonist might be uneasy about her, i think this new world is confusing ...
it would be good if i could take her back like i said, ending up here wasn't by choice, we were fortunate enough to have the Diobel navy rescue us from a pirate ship that capture us, but to get back to the expanse, hopefully i can earn enough coin to earn passage back
Worliwynn chuckles and holds up her pudgy hands.

Asked fer me help with his dying breath.Tumbler notes there is another woman in the room, sitting behind a small desk.
He takes a moment and notices a brief glance between the women at the mention of Crave.
I came in here with only whats on me back. Needed a meal and a bed so I got mixed up with a job scouting under the Fishery. Turns out there is a whole lotta trouble under there. Now its ta' day after and I'm still skint. There may be loot down in those tunnels but I need gear up if I want to make it back. So I'm lookin' fer something that a person of my skills can do to make a few coin.
He holds out his arms and blows out a puff of air. And thats all I got.

Respectfully, I need details. We are all working persons, I only ask so there are no unnecessary mistakes. Whats the timetable? Your associate is expected today, tomorrow or when available? You already know I am a stranger here, it takes time to plan any job.. Tumbler waits before going on.hedgeknight wrote: ↑Tue Nov 28, 2023 4:28 pm Crook's Nook

"Respectfully...the only details you need are directions to the Garrison so you can observe guard patterns; so you will know the best time to arrive and rescue our friend. This needs to be done today."Computer +1 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 28, 2023 5:34 pm Respectfully, I need details. We are all working persons, I only ask so there are no unnecessary mistakes. The woman behind the desk pushes back her chair and stands up. "There will be a convenient distraction at noon today; approximately four hours from now. The Garrison will empty out to deal with it and that should leave the place pretty much open. Oh, there may be one guard or two, but you can handle that, right?"
She turns to Mera. "Perhaps we chose the wrong person for the job. What do you think?'
Mera cocks an eyebrow. "Perhaps. We'll see won't we, Tumbler?"

Tumbler remains calm, ignores the threats and carries on. This crew may kill him but they are still nothing compared to the abuse his own clan put on him during his apprenticeship. Tumbler is stubborn even for a dwarf and this is business. A distraction is good. Where is the meeting point fer me to bring the eh' special guest?". He thinks for a second and adds, An' is this guest going to be happy to come along or something I gotta drag?"

I would love a glass of tea, but I am in need of herbs. I must gather as many as I can. I have a large list and need to get on with it. Do you happen to know where I can Find some Dingle-berry Dand-al-ions. I have no idea what they look like and this guy wants 2 sprigs for his brewery. And I need some healing herbs for a poultice to heal some friends too. And there is the need for a Long Bow so I am looking to find a long stave to make one. If you would be willing to help me gather some then yes I have time to enjoy some tea.

yes i'll take some tea if'n ya got time, you got anything for Lulu? just watch yer fingers or do you mind if she hunts?
A tale for certain: the Diobel navy brought us here. The pirates seized us from the expanse, attempting to sell us. I reckon they could have fetched a better price for her than for me. As soon as they loosened my shackles, I broke someone's jaw. Luckily, the navy were good men, but as kind-hearted as they were, they weren't keen on making the journey all the way back to the expanse

Tuga waits until Keeleno is more steady, fidigiting slightly.
"We gathered some well made man traps yesterday, I heard you might be interested in them.
Tuga moves up and places the 3 on the table.
"I washed my blood off them, Ha. I figured I would offer them to you first."

Re: Exploring Otari - Locales and Locals
While Elwood climbs the riverbank back to the main road, Brelda fetches his gear. They trade gear for fish standing outside the inn and the worry on her face is plain. "Please be careful," she says, pressing a calloused hand on Elwood's arm. She then watches him walk away for several minutes before going into to prepare lunch.
Elwood walks up the main road along with dozens of others who have turned out to see what the explosion was about. Some are running toward the area where plumes of smoke continue to rise in the sky; others are running away from it, concern and perhaps fear on their faces. There is a lot of talk about what this could mean. Whether it was an accident or intentional, and if intentional, will it happen again?
Elwood arrives near the burning remnants of the building which is cordoned off by the town guard, dressed in their deep blue uniforms, their faces grim as they hold back the crowd of onlookers. A lot of folks are chattering and asking questions, but then Elwood realizes, one man near the building is talking in a loud voice.
"Like I was saying, if anyone has any knowledge as to why this happened, you know where to find me. You have my word, and the word of my men, I will not sleep on this! I will find the culprit and they will be punished...severely!"
Elwood hears several folks murmur and chuckle about "Ol Lardass" and his bravado; these comments seem to mostly come from younger Otarans. Elwood doesn't see any dead bodies or any burned bodies for that matter, but there is debris everywhere; some folks are even filching a piece or two, seemingly for souvenirs. Suddenly, a hand is laid on his shoulder. Elwood turns quickly and sees an older fellow standing beside him, slight droopy smile on his face, and he already smells as if he has been in the wine this morning. "Say...didn't I see you last eve at the Fishery? You're new in town, ain't ya? Whaddaya make o' all this, eh?"

The old drunk murmurs something about "no respect for folk anymore" before Elwood moves away to find the captain of the guard. The man is not hard to miss, dressed in his green-tinted armor and looking mad as hell. He doesn't really notice Elwood approaching him until he's only a few feet away. Then the man steps back and reaches for his sword. "What do you want, citizen? Can't you see I'm in the middle of something here?"
