The Dungeon of Crows - Expedition 1

#1 Post by Raven Crowking »

The dark narrow passage travels some 30 feet, and then steps descend into further darkness. This area seems markedly different from what has gone before, and Milner notices a scattering of black feathers near the lip of the descent.

The stairway goes down perhaps 20 feet into the darkness before reaching a landing, some 10 feet to a side. After that, another flight of stairs continues down to your left beyond a mouldering stone archway. Some detritus – old sticks, leaves, dirt, and rags – is piled in the far right corner, and spills out along the far wall toward the arch.

Milner pauses and picks up a couple of feathers. "Crow? Or cock I wonder?" He puts one feather in his cap and the others in his purse. He waits for backup.

They appear to be crow or raven feathers.

"In fer a copper, in fer a gold as me dear pap used ta say." says Willem as he moves up beside Milner. He too picks up one of the black feathers and twirls it between his fingers. "Raven I'd say. Or it be one damn big crow." He tucks the feather into his shirt hoping it will bring him some luck.

Jonas also walks to the top of the stairs, knuckles white as his fists are clenched in fear. "I...I don't know why I'm going, but I can feel the hand of fate pushing me towards these steps."

Jed stands behind Milner, peering down into the darkness and sniffing at the air.

The air smells old and damp....but there is a strange sweet current in it as well, as though of the outdoors.

Milner pokes around in the detritus by the arch. He also looks long and hard down those stairs. He checks his gear and prepares to descend.

The debris is mostly natural, although there are bits of unidentifiable cloth and small animal bones (mostly those of rats). Most of it seems to be old leaves, feathers, and the like.

Beyond the archway, the stair go down another 20 feet, before emerging into a larger space.

Now that Milner has gone down the first flight of stairs, he is surprised to feel fresh, cool air coming from behind him. Although the sunlight is not pouring in from above, it is definitely sunlight. Those who have not gone down the stairs cannot see this. Indeed, when Milner looks, he sees that the stairs behind him now lead to the surface. He cannot see his former companions, although they can still see him.

+1 Luck for Milner, for being the first to take the plunge.

Jed moves to join Milner, taking up a position behind him. Murq looks behind him, trying to make up his mind.

"Huh?"
Milner heads up the stairs towards this strangely natural light.

Wilem and Jonas look at each other. The halfling gives an exagerted bow, "After you, me good sirrah!". After a moments hesitation, Jonas moves downt he stairs to join the others, followed closely by Willem.

After a few steps, the halfling turns and calls to Murq. "Are ye comin' or stayin'? Ye best make up yer mind afore ye be left standing there alone."

There is daylight up above, at the top of the stairs. Strange ruins spread themselves across several acres of land. About three hours' walk away, you can see the walls of a city with shining golden domes and minarets rising beyond. The air seems warm, and there is a faint tang of the sea to it.

You can see the passage between worlds fading. The option will soon be gone.

"Hurry up ya lily-livered git. before it be too late!" Willem calls back over his shoulder to Murq as he hurries towards the fading passage, Jonas close on his heels.

The portal closes. If you entered, you are on the Dungeon of Crows side. Otherwise, you remain in the Barrowmaze.
