The Tomb of Magyar Varghoulis

Moorheeth can only stand and stare, a paralyzing fear and numbness overcoming his senses. By his side a guard quakes under the chill touch of the undead. Sundance wards herself by invoking an arcane Shield.

The guards weigh in, a flurry of sword thrusts slash at the ghouls and one falls beheaded upon the ground. The ghouls, famished and unrestrained press relentless towards the little group. Despite her summoned shield, the mercenary mage is raked twice, -4hp and a guard is savagely bitten, -5hp.

In the aisle between the pillars, the trio of Sir Dewey, Cosmo & Bharazd'had advance. A smite of divine wrath obliterates a ghoulish head. Smashing animal skull and undead cranium apart in a devastating whack. -19hp. The paladin can return the baton to Vann Hector as they keep score of critical hits and foes vanquished. The elf misses.

The way open to the radiant shield, the trio gather within its aura. Upon a coffer a gilded statue stands, holding up a shield emblazoned with a Sunburst design. St Ygg devotee Sir Dewey can recognise the sigil straight away as a blessed sign.

Despite the brilliance of the radiance emanating from the shield, it does not stop another ghoul stepping from the shadows. It attacks the Soothsayer, rending chunks out of the Lizardman. -7hp.
next actions please (and some observational contemplating from Moorheeth).

his eyes now getting used to the dimness, takes another swing at the nearest hostile:

Magic miner's pick: to hit [1d20+1]=16+1=17, DMG S/M [1d6+2]=4+2=6 L [2d4+1]=2+1=3

Sir Dewey

His disappointment at seeing a ghoul enter the radiant area and stand firm fails to distract his aim.
Flail: [1d20+1]=17+1=18
Flail Damage: [_2d4+2]=(4+2)=6+2=8 L:[1d6+2]=6+2=8

"How many are there?!" He calls out, trying to understand the situation.

Vann Hector's: Crypt Knight's longsword melee vs s/m [1d20+2]=13+2=15 [1d8+1]=3+1=4

"Don't let them out of the door!"

They have strange skulls certainly. Do they wear them as masks or headgear or are these ghouls part critter?

The Tomb of Magyar Varghoulis

Moorheeth, agape and paralyzed with ghoul venom can do little but watch helplessly as the comrades fight off the crypt ghouls.

-11hp, a ghoul bleeds, his blood soaking the coffer and radiant shield as he is hacked down by gnome and paladin. The lizardman Soothsayer overcomes the poisonous drool in his wounds and claws back at the ghoul. He wrestles him to the floor and ties the chain of shackled between his legs around the ghoul's neck. A twist, a jerk, a bone snaps. The undead put to lifelessness finally.

In the other combat, another guard collapses from the poison. The two remaining ghouls are subject to numerous assaults. They eventually fall under a dozen blows but not before injuring Sundance with a critical injury, -5hp. The pretty mage mercenary begins to bleed out upon the floor. With combat ended, a 1st Aid Kit can be used to staunch the wound and stabilise her condition but until a healing potion, spell it skill is ministered, she will remain unconscious.
The ghouls are dead. You can attend to Sundance and wait the turns until the guards and Moorheeth are back on their feet. The radiant shield seems to radiate less dazzlingly now that the undead are no longer around. Perhaps that gives some clues regarding certain traits it may have. The Sunburst shield, formerly wielded by a paladin of St Ygg can be passed into new hands. The seemingly heavy metal feels lightweight in Sir Dewey's hand and in this dark eerie crypt, a portal to the edge of the Abyss prisons holding a Nergal knight, you feel extra blessed.

The guards help you search the room. There are no vast contents of trove, just dark corners that smell of centuries old rot and decay. The ghouls vanquished. The bronzed statue that held the shield stands upon a small stone coffer. Not large enough for a body, it nevertheless holds some grave ashes in a decorative urn and another urn that jingles with glistening stones.

actions please Moorheeth, Sigrid, Cosmo, Vann Hector and Sir Dewey.

stares in horror tinged with triumph at the denizen of the underworld in shreds on the floor in front of him. "What other apparitions on the borderline of good and evil await us, in this unholy kurgan? Oh, and by the way, may I have my hand token back ?"

Sir Dewey

His head swivels around, trying to find more hostiles. "Everyone ok?" The Knight moves to examine the downed and finds Sundance bleeding out. He calls out for aid but spots Moorheeth on the ground. The Paladin mutters a prayer and lays hands upon the elf, attempting to save her.

As they wait for the others to recover, he examines the new shield approvingly. "What of that urn? The jingly one? Also, who is this statue of? The Knight who imprisoned the death knight?"

What's the layout of the area? More doors, or archways deeper?

Vann Hector

Searches the area. He can do little medical wide for Sundance. "F@#£", he thinks, "she will be roused from near death and look into this saviour's big blue eyes and ... be grateful ..."

He gives the Hoodoo back (sorry I thought you had that after we opened the door). He checks on Bharazd'had and the stricken guards and cleric Moorheeth.

Once folk are up on their feet, I will move to the stairs beyond the statue. "Cosmo, you did a good job before as party treasurer. Can we trust you with these?" He hands the 'urn of glistening stones' over to the gnome.

I certainly don't trust the men from Lord Krothos and probably not myself either, having started Barrowmaze by robbing the dead man in St Yggs crypt and nicking the gold ring from the swallowed elf.

What can I see down the next passage?

Cosmo

to Vann Hector: "Thank you for the continued vote of confidence. Strength is not my main quality - could I skip the urn and just carry the stones?" he turns the urn upside down, lets the stones form a pile on the floor while inspecting the urn to see whether it might be of value or could be discarded. If the urn isn't anything special, he counts the stones /how many are there ? how much do they weigh ?/, informs Vann and bystanders of the number, then carefully puts them away inside the small sack he carries in his backpack.

Sigrid

Sigrid looks around the room curiously. She wished she could help Sundance, but lacked the skills or knowledge to do so. Hopefully Moorheath would recover soon and could assist the stricken mage. So in the meantime, she allowed her large eyes to scan the room and its contents.

Moorheeth

As the paralysis fades away, Moorheeth stumbles forward staggering, but holding himself upright with his staff. Forcing his stiff muscles to obey he staggers over to Sundance to first apply medical attention, and then call upon magical healing!

The Tomb of Magyar Varghoulis
The doors open to an arched room, perhaps thirty feet wide and twice that long. Pillars with ghoulish bas-relief figures, elongated and alien form an aisle, at the bottom of which a statue of bronze holds high a radiant shield, the light from which dazzles with a brilliance that actually inspires hope in an otherwise dark and morbid place. Beyond the statue some stairs descend.
The group take a breather. Sundance is stabilised from continuing to bleed out by the laying on of hands the paladin. Once that is done
Moorheeth, recovered from his own paralysis prays over the stricken mage Sundance. Her rosy red cheeks full with healthy colour once more and the bleeding wounds seal up by the graces of St Ygg & Arcantryl. She breathes again much to everyone's joy.

The exploration into the dark unknown comes always at a cost. A war of attrition, slowly chipping away at character's health, spells, sanity. Still, undeterred the intrepid crew advance down the dark steps. A fetid blackness, not just of rot and decay but an atmosphere of unholy intentions.

The group are encouraged though. Not just by the sight of a hundred uncut rubies but the protective aura radiated by the shield.

the statue on the coffer holding the shield is a generic figure of a man holding the shield in some veneration or raised up to display its enhancements rather than a representative image of either the deceased, whose ashes are within the urn or Magyar Varghoulis.

I was also fielding questions ooc regarding the previous horse sounds and banging of hooves upon the door. There is no horse here though infamously, Magyar rode a hellish Nightmare steed. These ghouls were the source behind the animal neighing that you heard which perhaps in the acoustics of the crypt, sounded more equine when they were calling 'from beyond the grave'. They also bore strange, almost prehistoric animal skulls upon their heads. One is taken as a keepsake by the guards.

Vann Hector sneaks ahead. The elf goes down stairs, dark slick, oily underfoot, wet with rot and lichen, almost squelching in slimy miss underfoot. He keeps his balance, descending an indeterminate number of steps, cautiously observing his surrounds using infravision. That pales though as you bear you acquired blade, it gives off a baleful glow rather than a bright radiance. Magic swords glow, giving off a 5'ft radiance of light, sometimes more. In this instance, the dire green is a dark throbbing, something that has not emanated before.

... VH refering to ooc actions in private forum.

The others follow, their way brightened by flaming torches, a lantern and shield. Somehow the elf has descended beyond view for after going in to the darkness, he is not seen. In fact once you get halfway down the steps, the darkness overwhelms you and those natural lights become dimmed as though extinguished though by the heat you know the flames still burn in the tarry shafts. The darkness us magical then and only magical light can penetrate its depths.

Ghostly sounds are heard. The moaning of spirits chained or bound. You feel sudden small gusts flutter across faces, but no wind can be present here. The 'whoosh' fly by of disembodied personae, angry poltergeists who agitate you with annoyance. Though not physically harming you, each are subject to a poke, a prod, a trip, a stone being thrown to clatter against a helm. Only Sir Dewey is unmolested by these provocations. The group huddle closer, hands in the shoulder of the person in front.

Bharazd'had invokes a Light spell. A ball of light that he holds up in his hand. Immediately the flurry of spectres recede into the darkness as if banished. You stand not on a flagstone floor but upon a field of grass. Grey misty swirls surround you, it is as if you have left the Barrow Mound and wandered upon the Barrow Moor. Before you is a group of ancient standing stones, arranged in a circle. Each stone is roughly hewn, covered in thorny Rose vines that coil around them. The faces of the stone inwards to the circle are flat and etched with ancient runes.

In the middle of the standing stones is a large coffer upon a stone dais. Kneeling before the coffer is Vann Hector who is trying to lever the lid off the top of the coffer with his baleful blade. He has a wild look in his eyes and speaking in a foul utterance of 'black tongue'.

next actions, with initiative, everyone please.

Call it a few pounds in weight. An ancient urn, even a plain one might have intrinsic value.

Sir Dewey

He suggests keeping both urns, if at all possible. "I know a guy who may be interested."

As they reach the impossible scene of a grassy field, the Knight feels his hair stand on end. "This isn't natural." He points to the stones and asks "Can anyone check for magic around? I fear illusions." He reaches out with his senses, trying to determine a direction of evil nearby, focusing on the coffer and Vann Hector.

"Vann! Stop! We must use caution!" Sir Dewey advances on Vann Hector, calling his name and trying to get his attention. If he is able to reach Vann before stuff goes down, he'll try to pull him away.

Vann Hector

Is working furiously to unseal an ancient and warded sarcophagus. His sword, taken from a Nergal knight, perhaps a lieutenant to the Master buried within glows a sickly malachite green. An unearthly throbbing of colour that matches the equally disquieting throbbing going on in his head. Migraine?

He works like a man possessed (figuratively and quite literally) scraping lichen and moss and eons of grime away and clawing at the heavy lid.

As the group intrude upon his presence, he turns and curses them with a stream of unprintable curses, mocking their cause and the endeavour. He looks and sounds very un-Vann like ....

As the paladin moves towards him, he pulls out his crossbow and triggers a loaded bolt ...

Vann Hector triggers HH-xbow [1d20+1]=1+1=2 [2d4]=4
