Whichever fits your idea of the character better. My biggest complaint with point buy systems has always been that they encourage players to min/max the character builds.

There are so many ways you can do things.

You can min/max with other systems but point buy does make it easier.

Very true, it just seems like point buy encourages it more. Don't get me wrong I like the flexibility of the system. The biggest issue for me is that there are so many options/ways to get there that I am having a bit of a block on what I want to do.

Here is a thought. I have been thinking about disadvantages and how to take a bunch that combine to make sense. I have also been thinking about the genetically modified soldier, a search and rescue combat medic specialist in particular. The question really boils down to how far out there the GM is willing to go with this and fit in their view of the world/setting. My thoughts at one point came back to something like the Rifts Dogboy characters. A St. Bernard DogBoy would be both classic and perfect for this role and I can think of a ton of Disadvantages that would fit and make them cool to run at the same time. They could be a one-off that went wrong somehow or the cutting edge of the technology. Some info below if you are not familiar with Dogboys.

Sounds like a great concept if the GM is cool with it.

Looks cool to me Rex. You are correct that there are some magic numbers, but the best way to build a character is have an idea (conception) and move toward that. Often you will want more than you have have points for and that is where the decisions come from.

As interesting as that sounds, it won't work in my world. There are genetic modifications...on humans only. So, sorry to pop that bubble.

With that in mind, speaking only for myself we are doing a lot of guessing what your world is like and not like.

Should we be expecting some additional information coming?

House Rules?
Standard Items?
What should be purchased with points and what with money?

That is fine, I figured it was probably to far out there. That said a little more info on the setting would be helpful.

Yeah, I think I've gone as far as I can with character creation without a little more direction on the campaign world, and the previously mentioned rules.

Thanks.

Okay. The setting is near future. There are high tech weapons available as seen in the weapons list. Mega-corporations are the leaders in the world, although there are rogue corporations out there that are looking to further their own agendas or even chip away at the big boys. Humans have been using genetic modifications as well as technological means of enhancing their soldiers and those with the funds to afford it. It is feasible to 'dive' into the net via cybernetic enhancements as well as through 'dumb' terminals. Many areas of the world that were classed as third world areas are in chaos and are classed as 'red travel' zones. Space exploration stopped for a while, although there are several mega-corporations working on trying to get back into space. The population of the world fell sharply and is currently estimated to be around 3 billion, but that is a rough figure as the collapsed areas do not provide info on their populations.

  • So to use these weapons you should purchase WF: Small Arms to have Proficiency and appropriate skill levels to improve accuracy?
  • What are the HERO game mechanics for 'diving' into the net via cybernetic enhancements. Lots of Computer Programming, Duplication, Multiform, or just EGO and Mental Defense only on-line - Something else? I can think of multiple ways of doing it all have a different flavor.
  • What are limits on enhancements? What is the normal populations view on enhancements (are you treats like mutants in the X-men stories or is it more mainstream)

It seems we would need some sort of computer character in the group.

For ideas we currently have a mechanic type and a soldier/medic. Maybe we need to figure out the overview mix and then try and figure who takes what?

All equipment will be bought with money except for items that may be incorporated into a character's body (ie bionic eyes, limbs, cybernetic implants, etc) Standard game rules to be used.

Computer Programming, Security Systems, Systems Operation. Each attempt will be skill based with the ones I listed. Bonuses and penalties will be applied based on the type of computer equipment used or not used as well as defensive software used.
  • What are limits on enhancements? What is the normal populations view on enhancements (are you treats like mutants in the X-men stories or is it more mainstream) The public does not have any negative views on cyber enhancements and as to limits, you cannot emulate "superhero" powers such as power blasts, shrinking, invisibility, etc. If you have an idea on something, please ask and I can tell you what is good and not.

Sorry, I hadn't realised you'd answered the previous questions in your quote, due to the formatting.

So armour is bought with cash, as it's not incorporated into your body? But it's not listed in your equipment list.
