Port Royal

Docking bay 9

Dimitri and Terry hire a taxi to shuttle them and their belongings to the Jon Stenvallez.

Deciding a separate approach might be prudent, Terry has breakfast in a slop shop close to the ship berths.

Moving through the port Dimitri is directed to docking bay 9 for the Jon Stenvallez.

Cargo loading is underway and there is a fair amount of activity in the bay.



He's met by a gruff man in ships uniform who looks up from a clipboard he's holding.

"You Vlodnak?"

"I'm Dimitri, pleased..''" Dimitri begins but stops short as the man holds up a hand for silence and quickly reviews Dimitri's bona fides on the screen muttering to himself.

"Hmm, can't very well check any of this now can I? Imperial Navy? Halfway across the bleedin universe. Right then, put this on," he says handing Dimitri a VR headset and haptic gloves.

"Just follow the prompts and this here will suss out your skill soon enough."

About 10 minutes later the simulation ends.

"Alright then, guess they taught you well enough back home. We're lookin' for a full timer but since we leave tomorrow and no one else has come up yet you'll do as our 24."

He hands Dimitri a tablet, "Your mark here to accept the standard working passage terms; no pay, 1 jump including food & berth. Ships uniform and work kit provided for the duration and expected back on arrival at Onreon. You'll bunk with Stimez, he's in the cargo bay lashing containers. On this ship Gunnery reports to the Steward, that's me and Chief Triggs to you.

Unless there's work in the Gunnery you'll go where you're assigned and work when you're not off duty or at meals. I see you've some gear to bring aboard. We'll go stow it together, any weapons go in the locker. Declare 'em now. Try to smuggle one onboard and we find it, it's the boot or the locks after we're underway. Captain Viritz doesn't muck about with such nonsense."

Terry will lay low in the slop shop until boarding begins and then make his way onto the ship.

Alphonse gets himself properly cleaned up and changes into his Merchant Marine dress uniform arriving at Bay 9 5 minutes before boarding is due to start.

Lifting his luggage from the taxi he strides confidently towards the ship.

Aye aye, Chief Triggs.

One proviso: if you send me away from the the ship for cargo, parts, provisions…whatever…I want access to my weapons first. Only been here in Port Royal short time. I already realize what a cesspool this place is. Other than that, I got nothing to hide from you.

And you’ll get nothing but quality performance outta me. I’m actually not sure where in the sector I’m headed or what I want to do here…other than earn a lot of money. So, perhaps, consider this a tryout. Oh by the way, iI’m sure you saw my credentials regarding my other ship position quals, so when you need augmentation there just let me know. I’ll throw in there without charge.


He adds that last part in grinning, then he follows Tiggs inside to unload all his weapons in the locker and change into a crew uniform.

Terry spends the rest of the day in the slop shop, as long has he's awake and buying the staff don't seem to mind. He arrives at docks rumpled and highly caffeinated and is soon joined by Rando and Alphonse.

Passengers are greeted by Dimitri his dress whites. He leads them through depositing weapons for storage and staging any luggage for bulk cargo. He then has them walk through a large scanner before passing through to the boarding area. As names are checked off the High Passengers are escorted to the forward lift which opens into the Captain's Salon, a lovely room with subdued lighting and dark fragrant wood paneling offsetting brightly polished brasswork.

The room's chief feature is a holographic orrery surrounded by comfortable low furniture and which is currently displaying a slowly rotating Port Royal - including real-time meteor impacts. A large silver tea service, platters of warm pastries and bowls of fresh fruit are laid out for passengers to enjoy while they wait for departure.

Rando and the other low passengers are herded off to the aft lift near the cargo doors where last minute cargo is still being loaded.

The aft lift opens into a grey and white corridor that winds around to a room just big enough to hold 9 upright sleeper berths. Just outside the room a bright orange ladder leads up to an equally bright orange ceiling hatch marked - "Life Boat".

The ship's medic, a dour man who appears to be nursing a hangover, gives them a quick once over before sealing them into their cold passage berths.

"Strip, clothes go in the bag, bag goes in the drawer below your berth. Remember to keep breathing regularly while the capsule fills, you're not actually drowning. Next!"

Alphonse will check-in to his stateroom and ensure his luggage is safely stowed.

He will then make a tour of the readily accessible areas discretely checking that all safety equipment is in place and has valid test certificates visible. Following that he finds a seat in the Salon and takes tea and a pastry while exchanging small talk with any other passengers.

Terry will help himself to a few snacks and then proceed to his room to settle himself in for the journey. After cleaning himself up and getting presentable he will join Alphonse in the salon.

At 15:30 sharp gangways are raised and by 16:00 the ship is underway. The pilot is a canny one and manages to avoid any close encounters that require the ships guns. At 20:30 she enters jump space without incident.
