Leibish sighs loudly in relief when the lamprey releases its jaws and he pries it from his skin under the point of his blade. His face is then fraught with conflict over who to assist first. He glances quickly between Sigrid and Harmony, trying to compare the distances between them and his current location.

He randomly determines Sigrid is closer and struggles to assist her, from the waters teeming with hungry parasites. He wades towards Sigrid and locks arms at her elbow for balance. "Steady your legs now for just a moment, my lady," With his dagger in his free hand, he reassures her and brandishes the dagger.

He slices at the lamprey still attached and pries its jaws embedded in her skin

Bogtown Northwoods

The vampiric eels continue to leech warm blood, sating themselves on the plasma rich streaks flowing out of Sigrid's and Harmony's veins. Each suffers a further -1hp blood loss. The critters hang on. Wrapping themselves like serpents around limbs to secure their toothy hold upon leg and back. Despite the best efforts, no one is able to shake free of the lampreys bloodlust.

Sigrid melee dagger vs lamprey [1d20+4]=3+4=7[1d4]=3Harmony melee spear [1d20]=7[1d6]=4

The women look desperately anaemic, pale and faint and the lampreys could easily bring them to unconsciousness. Deciding it easier to help each other, they stab out at the creatures afflicting their comrades, the elf slicing through the lamprey on the mage's leg. But Sigrid is not able to reciprocate the act, failing to stab into the feasting creek dweller.

Sigrid melee dagger vs lamprey [1d20+4]=1+4=5[1d4]=4 Harmony dagger vs lamprey [1d20+4]=17+4=21 [1d4]=2

Leibish, successful attack on lamprey ends the conflict, fail and Harmony takes another minus to her health.

Can you clarify the last sentence? I'm not sure if it succeeded or failed:

No, I am suggesting an outcome for your next attack.

So I rolled two attacks for the women, the first included your attack, then the lampreys withdraw blood automatically (until slain or gorged and they drop off) then Sigrid's and Harmony's next attack. As one attack missed and an eel is still feeding , I need your attack to try and kill it.

Once it is dealt with, I will narrate the rest of your journey to Bogtown.

Leibish fails as he attacks the lamprey in melee with dagger [1d20+4]=2+4=6 doing [1d4]=3 slashing/piercing damage

As Harmony weakens with each passing moment the lamprey drains her blood, Leibish struggles to effect a rescue.

With one arm locked in hers at the elbow, Leibish feels Harmony stumble with a splash and become momentarily limp. He fights against both gravity and the river current to keep her from collapsing. His dagger in his other hand swipes wildly through the air in an attempt to sever the parasite from her body.

The writhing creature continues to pulse and suck undaunted.

Forgive me for taking a creative license, based partially in imagination, and partially based in ignorance of lamprey, this lamprey pulses while sucking the blood from its victims. It's a fairly gruesome image in my Mind's Eye

gruesome is good. You get the image of it sucking blood in with each heart pump.

Sigrid melee dagger vs lamprey [1d20+4]=5+4=9[1d4]=3 Harmony dagger vs lamprey [1d20+4]=2+4=6 [1d4]=4

This eel is a real blood sucker. Harmony suffers another -1hp.

After sating itself, filling its stomach and reservoir up with a full of elven blood, the lamprey burps, releases it vacuum strong hold on her back and drops off to wriggle back through the mud and into the creek.

With no more creatures feasting on you, the trio can bind wounds as best they can and trek southwards towards the frontier settlement of Bogtown.

I am in the process of adding more to that Settlement thread. But for now you can post your arrival at the Toasted Troll Tavern.

In that thread Golgarth is present though for calendar synchronization, he is actually a few days ahead of you so you can't interact as characters.

I will post an arrival in that thread as soon as possible but ask your forbearance as Passover begins Friday night next week, April 15.

In case you're unfamiliar, it requires the most intense manual and seemingly obsessive effort to prepare of all the Jewish holidays: buying supplies, cleaning, cooking, cleaning from cooking, etc. (If you're curious, slide through parts of this video for a short and cute presentation)

Things seem to be going as smoothly as possible at my house for now, but experience shows the tension tends to escalate until it arrives.

Bogtown to the Wrydwood.

May 14th 1066.

Starting out after breakfast, Leibish heads off southwards, Sigrid & Harmony by his side. The latter is fifteen miles from home though those short leagues are taken through a dangerous and unpredictable wilderness.

Between the two settlements is a forest fraught with creatures fleeing their own nemesis's of the western Barrow Moor or the mountain peaks to the east. Torch bearing as guides are two mercenaries, they trudge in silence concentrating on the task to follow a slim trail much overgrown through lack of use.
A couple of hours in and that danger already shows itself. You are walking slowly through dense undergrowth, the two mercenaries cutting a new trail with their machetes. Up ahead you hear a commotion. Several cries and grunts of pain as if a fight was taking place. You can see some figures brandishing flaming torches, firebrands like your own. One figure, seems to get caught up in the melee and flung backwards to impact with a sickening crunch against a tree trunk. They slowly collapse lifeless to the floor.

You are yet to be noticed, so can pass by possibly and leave whoever is troubled to their fate. Or intervene as you see fit.

Leibish will intervene, drawing an arrow back in the string but holding it in place for the moment. He kneels between Fenton and Milner, within sight of the main assailant and calls a warning, "Stop! Do no more harm!! What is the nature of this violence?" Unsure of the circumstances between those fighting, Leibish will wait to release the bowstring until there is a clear threat.

Bogtown Southwoods.

May 14th 1066.

Deciding to intervene rather than pass by, Leibish nocks a shaft to the Elkhorn bow and creeps forward, moving from tree trunk to tree trunk to gain a better view of the melee taking place in a small clearing ahead.

Following through the foliage behind come Sigrid and Fenton leaving the other mercenary guide with Harmony in a sheltered spot behind.

Calling out to halt the fighting does little to stop the fight through you add to the distraction.

More than half a dozen rough goblinoids, as tall as a man with piecemeal leathers are surrounding a larger olive skinned, warty giant. The gaunt figure, a shock of black hair and jet black eyes fill out a neanderthal visage of prominent bones and misaligned teeth. He wears a kilt of animal skins and brandishes not a weapon but a large bellows under his arm which has several bone pipes dangling from it. The hobgoblins prod him with spears and harass him with firebrand torches, oil upon his leg already burning his mottled troll skin.

He cries both in anger and pain, raking a claw across a hobgoblin's head. Gripping his victim by the throat, the troll lifts him off his feet and shakes him like a ragdoll.

Two hobgoblins closer to the trees turn to see this new figure emerge upon the scene. They brandish spears and firebrands in your direction.

Seeing the situation better, you can make a more informed choice as to how you involve yourself or try to withdraw.

Leibish's defiant tone turns remorsefully fearful, "My mistake, Sigrid, this is not the fight for us to interfere! Flee and I'll deter them. "

He withdraws from the approaching hobgoblins, releasing his bowstring in suppressive fire at the nearest two. I'm uncertain of the distance, so I simply rolled and will let you adjust as necessary.

Leibish fires two arrows from his elkhorn short bow. [1d20]=18[1d6]=3[1d20]=1[1d6]=4

Sigrid frowned at the sight of such uneven odds, though the troll's strength and tenacity no doubt brought things slightly more in balance. Nonetheless she shouts in trollish to the giant: "If you need our help, we will be glad to join the fray!" Waiting for a response before following Leibish's command of retreat.

Bogtown Southwoods.

May 14th 1066.

Suddenly faced with an unexpected encounter, the archer Leibish releases an arrow at point blank range into the torso of a charging hobgoblin. The figure clutches at the shaft, blood streaking down his chest. A follow up attack by the mercenerary is parried and a second shaft goes wide.

Sigrid shouts in Trollish, a dialect she has not used in a while. It surprises her comrades as much as the troll.

The hobgoblins are caught between two forces. An angry troll who they try to bathe in oil and burn and the trio of adventurers. One archer evens the odds by aiding his injured comrade and sending an arrow to impale the guard in his shoulder also. The quartet of humanoids surrounding the troll press attacks, inflicting -5hp on the giant-kin.

The troll is swift in his retribution. He bites the throat of the hobgoblin he holds, mauling the warrior and in a gout of blood, decapitating him.

One hobgoblin charges, spear levelled at the barbarian mage who dares to intrude and side with the troll. He thrusts but buries his spear into the trunk of the tree she stands beside.

Sigrid continues speaking trollish until the hobgoblin strikes at her. She curses in northern and then speaks an arcane incantation casting Magic Missile at the offending hobgoblin.

Leibish harnesses his bow and grasps his new quarterstaff. With the hobgoblin's Spear embedded in the tree, Leibish strikes with a sweeping arc and crushing blow in an attack of opportunity!

The melee continues. Sigrid pierces the heart of one Hobgoblin with arcane words that trigger a shaft of energy. He goes down under a hail of blows. Your mercenary still tussles with his opponent, both injured by arrows.

The troll makes short work of those humanoids harassing him, taking off another head and sending a third to crunch lifeless into a nearby tree.

The archer hobgoblin retaliates with an arrow that stings the troll but the wound, though bloody, soon begins to congeal and regenerate. The troll is scarred from his burning leg but the oil has been used up.

For the hobgoblins, the battle has turned against them and they turn to flee the scene, running at pace into the forest in all directions.
You are left in the tense aftermath of the encounter. A troll, stares at you not sure of your intentions. Equally you stare back. Harmony and the second mercenary come into the clearing.

Looking around and seeing no more adversaries assailing him, the troll bites on a bone pipe attached to the bellows he carries. He blows into the drone bag, squeezing it rhythmically between his elbow and rib and piping a few notes of a solemn dirge.

Seeing victory has been delivered, Sigrid places her hands on her hips and begins to sing a song in trollish that roughly follows the troll's dirge. When finished, continuing to speak in trollish she asks if the troll might give them direction to the safest route of travel.
