Jump To Spectra

Now that the ship is in jump space safely, the crew begins to settle down for the jump from Kurzu and Spectra.

You don't know what to expect when you emerge, it should be a normal re-entry into normal space, but you don't know.

You also don't know what to expect when you reach Spectra. There has been very little information about that system available. You are able to find the following in the Library:

Spectra (B875933 8) is an industrial world with pre-stellar tech, but it does have a Starport capable of building non-starships and repairing starships. There is 1 planetoid belt and 2 gas giants in the system. The atmosphere has a taint of some kind, but it isn't clear what it is. About half the surface of the main world is covered in water. It has a high population, about 2 billion inhabitants. A self-perpetuating oligarchy runs the world but the law level is pretty low. You find a note that Spectra produces a large amount of Industrial Chemicals and Plastics from rich petroleum fields.

Joxe works with Kendrick and Magda to analyze the jump drive's telemetry, both what she'd recorded, and the real-time data from the system.

While in jump Hendrik will go through the data with Joxe and Magda. He will also kick himself for the criminal lack of opsec and work on a a program to check the port ship registries, news feeds and comms data when we enter and leave a system to look for possible tails. He'll record available model, designation data as well as names, in case they're doing the same thign we are swapping in different ID's.

Hendrik, Joxe and Magda scrutinize all the data and the jump looks completely normal. Everything from the new software and hardware to the original stuff was within 0.0001% of perfect. It really does look like this works. Hendrik and Magda have the merest inkling of why the new software is working and what the new hardware did, too. It's going to take a good while to figure this out for them. Experts in Jump Theory and Jump Drive Engineers might get there sooner, but both of you feel good about this. Joxe is a bit flummoxed, however on the new theory. Of course, she was flummoxed on the old theories and just does things by wrote when it comes to running the jump drive.

Magda sees what Hendrik is doing with the new software to check registries, new feeds and comms....

While in jumpspace, Tamaki will continue to do what she's been doing lately (studying sensor and comm ops, and taking bridge shifts).

You don't have enough data from the one system you've done this with. You'll have to collect data for a while for this to work, but it should...and it's a very good idea <-- says the Ref. :)

Joxe, who has practically worn the paint off the maintenance hatches while making repeated inspections of the jump drive and grid nodes, sits at her Engineering panel in her vacc suit. She has the helmet and gloves stowed - for the moment. She briefly considers pumping down the atmospheric pressure, but then she decides that the difference won't matter to the starship's tough hull. If something went wrong, well, explosive decompression would be the least of their worries. She keyed her comm. "Bridge, Engineering is ready for emergence."

Hendrik pulls the Mae Lee transponder cartridge out and put in one of the others before we emerge.

He rolls a die from the board games and the number came up for "Desmond's Win" , he'll pass out the ships ID's and put the papers where they're normally stored. He'll set the screen display header for all the ships systems to say "Desmonds Win" at the top, so we don't forget and slip up :-)

Does this include the logs or do we have some sort of subroutine in the Ship's computer to fix this? This place is WAAAY off the beaten path so I'm not sure what to expect, but I expect that in more civilized ports examinations of the logs would not be uncommon?

There is a subroutine that substitutes the name from the transponder into the logs. A real hacker expert (like Magda) could detect tampering with a really deep dive into the logs, but normal port examinations wouldn't find anything.

At 167 hours, 59 minutes and 52 seconds into the jump, Akus Moby emerges from Jump Space. Everyone's stomach twists slightly, but this is a smooth transition, one of the smoothest you ever remember having, and you are all back to normal in just a few seconds.

Data starts coming in from sensors on the bridge. Who is manning the Sensors/Comm station?

The pilot sees nothing near the ship visually, or on short range radar. He awaits the maneuver drive to gain helm control.

During the few seconds it takes to start getting maneuver, the bridge crew drink in the visuals and radio noise coming in.

There is a blue white marble 20 degrees off your port, from the look of it you'd guess only about 400,000 klicks away. A pair of moons orbiting it are visible circling this world.

The radio channels are filled with a plethora of sounds, music, voices speaking a language you aren't familiar with, modulated noise that has to be visual signals that you haven't tuned into correctly yet, hissing staccato pulses that you think are data packets coming from the planet, bouncing off orbital satellites, and some heading away from this world toward somewhere else in the system.

In Engineering, Joxe and Tas check the data from the engines, everything looks perfect. Who is shutting the Jump Drive down and securing it and who is bringing the maneuver drive online so the pilot can steer the ship?

Hendrik is on Comms/Sensors. He'll start scanning for a system control beacon, and start scanning around us for other traffic etc. He also turns on the ships transponder so they know we're here and maybe what language to talk to us in..

Tres starts the maneuver drive then comms the Bridge, "You've got maneuver now. The jump looked perfect back here how did it go up there?"

Joxe's downloads go into a cartridge for later viewing. As she's doing the downloads she is looking at the board and everything on it is green. Best board she's seen since coming aboard Akus Moby.

Hendrik is on Comms/Sensors. He'll start scanning for a system control beacon, and start scanning around us for other traffic etc. He also turns on the ships transponder so they know we're here and maybe what language to talk to us in..

There is a pulsing beacon coming from the planet off to port. Sensors pick up two ships in orbit around the planet and two more in what look like far orbit, about halfway between where you came in and the planet itself. The transponder codes coming back identify them as SDB's, part of the Spectra Navy (names given, but not needed right now).

Hendrik flips the transponder on, seconds before receiving a request to identify...passing in transit obviously. The request came over the radio in a heavily accented Ganglic. It is followed up by a another call.

"Velcome to Spectra, Desmond's Vin. Ve get wery few wisitors here on Spectra, zo your appearance is wery unexpected. System Defense Boat Tankard Fill vill come along side for inspection and clearance. Take course 804, piped to you, and hold steady on velocity as Tankard Fill matches up vid you."

"Your transponder says you hailed from Surt in the Confederation?"
the traffic controller asks, "Now, vot brings you to Spectra, Desmond's Vin?"

Hendrik replies "Hello Spectra control" Ok, now my Bond Villain radar just exploded! :D "We have a charter willing to pay for empty space jumps to get to Schlesinger a little quicker; really hoping we can tank up now that we're here!

Curiosity, too; might be a way for all of us all to make some credits if it turns into a more regular route. "
