Kentaro listens to the rumors of the postal courier, pushing his rice around in his bowl. The Minamoto care for their own power, he thinks, recalling his own grandfather's defamation, the neglect of his mountain at their hand ever since. Ever my home suffered their neglect through the Matsumoto, but to turn out the common folk and burn their homes... that is unthinkable. His mood is darkened when the man joins the table, but he says nothing. After a time, he begins with his samisen.

Haruto smiles and welcomes the courier to the table, offering conversation in contrast to the dour and taciturn Omi, Ito, and Kentaro. "Great trees are envied by the wind," Haruto quotes as they discuss the Minamoto pursuit and failure to siege the Taira. His mind turns to his father's prayers for him. Haruto introduces himself to the courier as a cousin within the Takeda and shifts the conversation back to the siege. He tries to sound wise, speaking from his knowledge of military strategy on matters of war, on the lack of tactics of the battle, hoping to convince the courier to divulge more in the process.
