Scavenger

#2 Post by Enoch »

Given the constant state of war, I imagine there are plenty of ruins, including destroyed stations and ships. We know that there are warships, as even little personal vessels like PCs have are armed. A character who focuses on searching out and looting these vessels could be fun.

Paths: SCAVENGER is clear. Looking at the rules for derelicts, it looks like EXPLORER may be key as well. Other options:
  • GEARHEAD is pretty important, too; he's likely to be isolated, and much of what he scavenges may only be saleable if he repairs it.
  • SERVICE POD allows him to scavenge from non-atmospheric conditions, and an EXOSUIT allows him to board and explore vented ships. Alternately, a UTILITY BOT Companion could probably do the exploring also.
  • SCOUNDREL might be necessary in order to sell stuff, or possibly TRADER.
  • VOIDBORN. This character is going to spend a lot of time in space.
  • EXPLORER might be appropriate, as he roams in search of things to loot.
  • OUTCAST is possible; scavengers are likely not particularly welcome anywhere, even when they're necessary.
  • WORKSHOP improves his ability to repair things and makes him almost more a tinker than a scavenger.
Stats: Wits will be important for repairing in the field, and is also used to Resupply by scavenging or crafting. In addition, it's also used to Explore a Waypoint. Wits should absolutely be 3.

Swordmaster

#3 Post by Enoch »

Assets: Blademaster, Bannersworn (to Ironhome school)

This character could go in a couple different ways, depending on the 3rd Asset:
  • Haunted: An instructor who made a mistake and got a student killed, or who was forced to kill someone he didn't want to in a duel
  • Loyalist: Emphasizes the instructor role, as he assists his students
  • Mercenary: A graduate of an Ironhome school who now sells his blade for coin
  • Vestige: The last surviving member of an Ironhome school. What happened to the school? Was the Ironhome destroyed, or was the school wiped out in war?
  • Veteran: Most graduates make their living in war, which is endemic in this setting.
Stats: Emphasis is likely to be on physical stats. Iron is likely to be primary. Heart is also going to be important. Suggested: Iron 3, Heart 2.

Infochant

#4 Post by Enoch »

COURIER would be interesting given the reliance on data couriers. Add SCOUNDREL for an Infochant, or ANALYST for a spy or analyst. Maybe this guy is working for a faction, either trying to poison a rival faction's information, or maybe he collects and sells information to the highest bidder? An Ex-Herald is an interesting concept.

Assets: COURIER is the obvious choice; Heralds are information-couriers. An infochant would probably want AGENT (to steal info instead of buying it, as well as decrypt information), and SCOUNDREL or TRADER can handle the trading aspect (choice really depends on how above-board the character is- is he selling stolen or illegal information, or is information-selling a legitimate enterprise?) ENGINE UPGRADE could be useful, for quickly transporting time-sensitive information.

Note that this concept is not really about COLLECTING information (AGENTS and DIPLOMATS and EMPATHS are better at that), but about acting as a middle man to connect buyers and sellers.

Stats: Wits is probably primary, but Heart will be important, and Shadow will also be necessary if operating on the fringes of the law (which you probably will be). Suggested: Edge 1, Heart 2, Iron 1, Shadow 2, Wits 3

Bounty Hunter

#5 Post by Enoch »

COMMUNITIES and LAWS indicate that there are numerous, far-flung communities with no overarching legal system, and few (if any) concentrations of power to enforce justice. These conditions are ripe for bounty-hunting, as desperate communities hire justice instead. That said, hunters will see few, if any, legal protections, and life is close enough to the edge that bounty hunting will not be a glamorous profession.

Assets: BOUNTY HUNTER, of course. Other options:
  • ARMORED makes sense, particularly given the endemic state of war (and reinforces the Boba Fett vibe).
  • A weapon-related Path: BLADEMASTER, GUNNER, or GUNSLINGER. GUNSLINGER's 3rd ability is interesting for a Bounty Hunter. Even BRAWLER works, as it explicitly is not just for unarmed combat, despite the name. (In fact, disarming/grappling/shoving/stunning will be important for a Bounty Hunter.) SNIPER probably isn't as good unless the Bounty Hunter typically only takes contracts to bring the target back dead.
  • COURIER is actually viable, as a bounty would be a valuable cargo. The 3rd option there is probably not kosher (I would not consider returning a bounty as a "courier mission", although a Bounty Hunter may take a job to safely transport someone to another place).
  • EMPATH could be useful for gathering information from a bounty's associates.
  • WEAPONMASTER is great for recreating that Boba Fett vibe of having lots of suit-borne weapons.
  • For a supernatural element, SEER is uber-useful and gives you a Gand Findsman-like Bounty Hunter. Bonuses to Gather Information are quite useful for Bounty Hunters.
  • A HOVERBIKE or BANSHEE could be useful for planet-bound transportation. Alternatively, equip a ROVER with an INTERNAL REFIT module (2nd ability) to have a containment cage.
  • Companions are just generally useful. Besides the BANSHEE, a COMBAT BOT or ROCKHORN is always an obvious choice for a combat-centric character; GLOWCATS or SIDEKICKS are useful for interrogations and information-gathering; SURVEY BOTS are useful for initiating an encounter with a bounty, etc.
Stats: Stats will depend greatly on the Assets chosen. Emphasize any stats appearing in the special abilities. All of the stats will be useful to a Bounty Hunter.

Pirate

#6 Post by Enoch »

Given the state of law and communities and the ever-presence of war, pirates are pretty much a given.

Paths: ACE and SCOUNDREL. Options for the 3rd:
  • Ship Components will be really useful for a ship-focused character, of course.
    • ENGINE UPGRADE is not super-useful at the base, but the 2nd and 3rd abilities are great.
    • EXPANDED HOLD could be useful if you're successful.
    • HEAVY CANNONS are always useful for combat, and the 3rd ability is all about using your firepower to intimidate an opponent- perfect for pirates!
    • STEALTH TECH is always useful for pirates, and the base ability lets you ambush foes.
  • A SERVICE POD Support Vehicle could be useful if you're forced to destroy an opponent, but there's useful cargo floating around (kind of video-gamey, but still...)
  • An AUGMENTED pirate captain would be memorable.
  • Some weapon skill, particularly BLADEMASTER, BRAWLER, or GUNSLINGER. (GUNSLINGER's 3rd ability is useful for intimidation.)
  • BANNERSWORN, if you're part of a larger fleet or pirate nation.
  • COMMANDER is obviously useful for a pirate captain (though it's really only useful if there are other PCs present).
  • VOIDBORN is useful for anyone who will be spending most of their time in space.
Stats: Shadow. The rest will depend greatly on what direction you take the character.

Vault Hunter

#7 Post by Enoch »

Given the information about the Ascendancy, a character that seeks out and explores old Ascendancy vaults could be a lot of fun.

Assets: ARCHIVIST, EXPLORER, SCAVENGER. Other options: SENSOR ARRAY, NAVIGATOR, BANSHEE, SIDEKICK, SURVEY BOT.

Stats: Wits is probably the most important, but Shadow, Edge, and Heart are also probably important as well, and Iron will get you through injuries.

Big Game Hunter

#8 Post by Enoch »

The system is full of interesting lifeforms. Some probably have valuable medicinal or commercial properties, or hold religious or folkloric value. But they can't be, or haven't been, domesticated, and someone is needed to harvest these dangerous beasts.

Assets: NATURALIST and SLAYER, obviously. Final asset has some options:
  • SNIPER is useful for the upgrades, but the base doesn't really help (it's all about taking out mooks at the start of a fight).
  • GUNNER is generally useful for ranged combat, whether you get the drop on your target or not. Might save your life if you become the hunted.
  • EXPLORER could be useful as you travel the worlds in search of prey.
  • A HOVERBIKE or BANSHEE would be handy to travel with, but a ROVER might be even better, considering you're (hopefully) going to be bringing back a carcass.
Stats: Edge and Shadow will allow you to sneak up on your target and ambush them at range. Wits will allow you to identify potential game and find them. Suggested: Edge 3, Heart 1, Iron 1, Shadow 2, Wits 2.
