Dexterity (Initiative)
The optional Individual Initiative rule will not be used.

The 'Initiative' modifier under the Dexterity ability score can be ignored.

Prime Requisite Modifiers

Prime Requisite Modifiers
I want to avoid perpetuating the built-in advantages characters with high ability scores already have, and instead try rewarding characters that are successful despite working at a disadvantage.

As an experiment, we are going to ignore the current Prime Requisite Modifiers chart from the book and use the following matrix instead:

2. Choose a Race

#23 Post by dmw71 »

Choose a Race
If you're here, it's because you selected the Advanced Method of character generation. Good, you're in the right place.

Note
If you selected the Basic Method of character generation, you're in the wrong place. However, since you're here:
* If you chose a traditional class, your race is Human.
* If you chose a race-as-class, well...

Select one of the races available from the below list, noting:
  1. Some races have minimum ability score requirements;
  2. The listed racial level limits will not be used;
  3. Because of this, the Human race will inherit certain racial abilities.
See the 'Related' section, below, for details.

Racial Level Limits

#24 Post by dmw71 »

Racial Level Limits
Racial class and level limits also work as a balancing factor in the rules, offsetting the extra abilities granted by demihuman races with strict limits on class choice and level advancement.

In this game, however, these level restrictions will not be enforced.

Since this change will eradicate the sole advantage of the Human race -- its unique access to some classes and its
unlimited level advancement -- making humans relatively underpowered. For this reason, optional racial abilities are given
for the Human race (see: Human Racial Abilities).

Human Racial Abilities
Because the Racial Level Limits for demihuman characters has been removed, characters of the Human race will also have the following racial abilities:

Multiple Classes

#28 Post by dmw71 »

Multiple Classes
Upon further consideration, because of the exponential nature of the class XP tables, single-classed characters will rarely be more than one level ahead of mutli-classed characters, putting them at a fairly significant disadvantage.

For that reason, I am leaning towards not allowing this optional rule.

I might be willing to consider a request to allow a multi-class combination, but these will be considered on a case-by-case basis, and only allowed in rare circumstances.

In these exceptional cases, the multi-class options must be chosen at character creation. Once play begins, a character will continue in their selected class indefinitely and no changes can be made.

4. Adjust Ability Scores

#29 Post by dmw71 »

4. Adjust Ability Scores
If you wish, you may raise your character’s prime requisite(s) by lowering other (non-prime requisite) ability scores.

For every 2 points by which an ability score is lowered, 1 point may be added to a prime requisite.

The following restrictions apply:
  1. Only Strength, Intelligence, and Wisdom may be lowered in this way.
  2. No score may be lowered below 9.
  3. Some character classes may have additional constraints.

6. Ascending AC
We will be using the optional Ascending AC rule in this game.

With this method, under the THACO column for your class, you will record the attack bonus instead of the THAC0 target number (and corresponding attack matrixes).

7. Note Saving Throws and Class Abilities

#32 Post by dmw71 »

7. Note Saving Throws and Class Abilities
Record any special abilities possessed by your character as a result of their race and class, as well as their saving throws.
Spell Books (AF,112)
Standard Spell Book Rules
Advanced Spell Book Rules

If your character has a spellbook, ask your referee which spells are recorded in it.
The referee may allow you to choose.

Rolling Skill Checks
All skills except falling are rolled on d%,
with a result of less than or equal to the
listed percentage indicating success.

Player Knowledge
The referee should roll for hide in shadows
and move silently on the player’s
behalf, as the acrobat always believes
the attempt to be successful. If the roll
fails, the referee knows that the acrobat
has been noticed and should determine
enemies’ actions appropriately.

Hit Points at 1st Level

#35 Post by dmw71 »

Hit Points at 1st Level
The optional Re-Rolling 1s and 2s rule will be used at 1st-level only.

There would only be one re-roll allowed, and again, only at 1st-level, but you can keep the higher result from the two tries regardless of the order in which they were rolled.

For example, if you re-roll a '2' on your first roll and a '1' on your second roll, you are allowed to keep the '2'.

This 'Re-Rolling 1s and 2s' rule will apply to either (or both) hit point rolls attempted by Human characters (Advanced Method) as part of their Blessed racial ability (see: Human Racial Abilities).
