Character Creation.

#1 Post by Spearmint »

This thread will be for comments and questions regarding character creation.

We have a Campaign ID: 916

To start with, I am using the AD&D 1st ed Players Handbook. It covers all the current playable races and classes. (Sorry no Assassin's, Barbarians, Bards, Psionics or Drow. I am not using Unearthed Arcana).

Please can everyone use a character sheet from the Unseen Servant dice roller forum. When completed you can pm me a copy for approval, I am easily pleased so you don't have to go overboard...

The method I favour is the standard: Roll [4d6c1] six times and you may assign the statistics in any order of preference. You may also racially adjust your ability scores if you are playing a non-human character. This is very much a game in which your starting attributes may go up and down, depending upon your actions, discoveries, skills and wounds.

After you have assigned stats, choose a race and class that you prefer to play. I appreciate that the fate of dice rolling may generate good, average and poor ability stats. So I want to reward those brave or foolhardy players willing to risk playing perceived underachievers by compensating them with bonus personal items. Please see my house rule reference topic on Heirloom items.

Choose your character's gender, age, weight, height. Create a little backstory for your character. You don't need to go overboard.

Roll [3d6] x10 to generate your starting gold piece allowance. A frugal amount, hence signing your life away to go adventuring in an effort to make your fame and fortune or die trying.

Equip your character. You may each have a standard set of normal clothes, backpack & bedroll for free. Every mage starts with their initial spellbook and a pouch of spell components, clerics have a basic holy symbol and a Vial of Holy Water, rogues receive set of basic Thieves Tools.

Everything else is book price. Players may purchase animal companions such as horses, pack mules, guard dogs if desired and Mages may start with a Familiar if they equip a Find Familiar spell as a choice. The Familiar type will be randomly determined.

After character creation you may find significant in game increases in the cost of armour, weaponry and equipment subject to local supply and demand.

List your inventory and weapons!. Remember if you do not have it recorded then you do not have it. You may assign any unspent gold to loose coinage or create saleable (and easier to carry or wear) assets like gold earrings, gemstone bracelet, fancy brooch. List any on your sheet.

All characters may start the game with maximum hit points plus or minus any constitution modifiers
for their 1st level. Players such as rangers or monks who start play with two hit dice only receive max hp for one dice and must randomly roll for the second dice. Con bonus is only applied once.

The player's guide indicates that certain dual-class combinations may be played by demi-human characters. However I prefer to have all characters begin play as single classed adventurers who then may add an additional class to their character after the point in which they would advance from 1st level. (so Red Eric the dwarf rogue must accumulate enough xp to become either a 2nd level rogue or choose to stay at 1st level but add a 1st level fighter class).

Choose any alignment except an evil one.

All characters speak Common, plus their racial language. Additional languages may be learned subject to Intelligence language bonus or time invested in study.

After completing your sheet, pm me a copy. Introduce your character in the rogues gallery topic of Tomb Raiders, announcing your arrival in the town of Helix.

And most of all, have fun! Any questions please ask.

[4d6c1]=15 [4d6c1]=7 [4d6c1]=15

[4d6c1]=15 [4d6c1]=9 [4d6c1]=11

Didn't make the 60 or less. :(

Are you allowing any 2 for 1 swaps on stats?

No swapping but you can adjust for racial features.

OM you rolled! I thought you might want to unarchive someone from your question previously.
For roleplay flavour you can bring along a Capuchin (monkey not monk).

I never heard back from you on that, but I will revive the salty mage for this game if you prefer. :D

Should I simply bring him back into the picture at first level?

Oh. I thought I asked if you had anyone in mind.

Anyway, Sven Jolly looks just fine from the rolls. The Capuchin can be to perk though we have no pistols for him to shoot you with.

Have updated inventory as you asked. One question. Are you allowing thieves to use bows? I am going to feel a poor elf without one especially if clerics of Herne may use them.

No thieves presently do not use bows but as an elf you may dual class at the next level which would provide one as a weapon of proficiency.

I added some favoured weapons or skills as a way to give some flavour to clerics and differentiate between faiths.

I am giving folk a few days to finish off filling in all the tabs and notes on character sheets. As long as they are fine before you leave town, a few days tweaking stuff is okay.

Were you going to give me the stats for his monkey?

Or should I just get them from one of the books?

How about this:

Tiny beast, unaligned: Capuchin Monkey

Armor Class: 6
Hit Points 2
Speed: 60 ft, climb 60 ft.
Saves: as F1
Acrobatics/Climb Walls as thief of 1st level.
Sleight of hand/pick pocket: as thief of 1st level.

May be trained to do specific skills (fetch, strike match, open jar, ring bell).

Unless you wanted to swap a spell for Find Familiar and cast that sometime?

Isvander’s starting roll.
Stat roll 1. [4d6c1]=15 [4d6c1]=11 [4d6c1]=9
Stat roll 2. [4d6c1]=9 [4d6c1]=15 [4d6c1]=14
Money roll Money [3d6]=10 x10
Secondary skill: None. Secondary skill roll [1d100]=83

Not bad. Now to decide what I want to be when I grow up!

No.

Just pick an age, gender, height, weight appropriate to character.

You can at least modify stats by in game roleplay to become wiser, more foolish even, insane, dextrous.
