Aged 38, Marco Hulsebosch leaves the army via explosive mishap that injured him. The effects were a reduction in his Endurance.

He applies to Merchant marine, enlisting as Crewman and gaining Steward 1 (quatermastering rather than service skills) and Engineering 1 (jump drives), a sister skill to his army learned (life support).

He survives career mishaps and through a Life event is rewarded with an increase in his Engineering (jump drives) 2 which reflects his twenty years of experience and craft.

He advances to Senior Crewman, gaining Mechanics 1.

Despite working out, age begins to catch up with him and the lack of enforced military fitness swapped for life in the civilian stream causes him to reduce -1 Strength.

Still, he feels good and with Cassiopeia growing, (she is twelve now)! He needs to think of her own college and life course.

He stays another term in the MM, gaining Pilot (space craft) 1. However he suffers a career mishap with Imperial restrictions impounding the ship and forcing it out of business. With the Captain and crew turning Rogue to stay in business, Hulsebosch leaves on good terms but with the 'Dog's Bollocks' and her crew as a contact if ever needed.

Now aged 46, reduced in physique (-1 Str & - 1 End) and with a teenage girl grifting Uni fees, he finally goes freelance, mustering out with a 'Ship Share' to see what adventure he has in the stars.

Childhood (1230-1248)
As a child of Plaats, I should have had every privilege and luxury – but I didn’t. My family ran a manufacturing firm on Magazijn with lots of exports to Plaats and so spent their time flitting between these two worlds. If we went, their idea of childcare was to deep-freeze us for the trip.
My response to their grooming me for executive life was to paint and escape to the water in a small dinghy; To use the family grav-gar for jaunts as soon as I could get a licence and to Party.
One of my older friends had joined the Army (Officer Cadet in University) – and after a particularly spectacular row with my dad it seemed the most disappointing thing that I could do was to join the Army. So, I did – and not a fashionable regiment either!
Term 1: Imperial Army (1249-1252)
The 32nd Line Regiment was not a grand unit. It was the kind of unit that went places and did the hard stuff and when the hard stuff was done, the riff-raff were returned home and the plush regiments came in and exploited the posting with less risk.
6 weeks of basic training taught me to shoot. The next four years honed that ability. The general garrison stuff was nothing much, but then we got landed in the Cauldron. The Imperium wasn’t prepared to give the place up and just kept feeding in replacements for those that died. 132 men of ‘B’ company went into that city; just over 400 replacements followed. 14 of the original 132 walked out – and we had only 60 (or so) effectives by the end. I was a platoon commander by then – an Officer by field promotion. None of the original company officers had survived. Ten troopers lost every week for a year. Not that it was that even. We even had a couple of weeks where no-one was killed or maimed. I still have my (now much patched) armour from the period; the “Nerve Fix” they applied to “Make us better soldiers” – and the dreams.
They gave us pretty ribbons and bits of metal by way of thanks, and I shifted out of the line into “Internal Security”
Term 2: Internal Security (1253-1256)
Someone thought an ex-Army guy who had lived through the Cauldron would be good in Special Reconnaissance. Sneaking, Hiding, Watching and occasionally Shooting. They put me back on the table, fiddling with my body so that I could lie with conviction (Another legacy I now endure) and then we spent an age training, Training, TRAINING. This time, the battlefield was to be amongst the people not just for a pile of unoccupied ruins. The occasional mission seemed like a rest.
Term 3: Internal Security (1257-1260)
For the first time, I felt like I was doing something genuinely Good. Infiltrating a nasty gang of criminals, investigating their activities, hacking their computers, stopping their operations. They were, of course, targeted because they were disrupting Noble Profits – but we didn’t care at the time. Their victims were mostly grateful. The Agency was also grateful. They paid me the complement of a promotion to Field Agent – and my prized rifle was retired to my private collection.
My spare time was taken up with ancient martial arts, learning the dance of the blades.
Term 4: Internal Security (1261-1264)
Watch, make contacts, watch some more. Scout round the premises. Observe without being observed.
Lots of making sure Government Employees and Scientists weren’t leaking stuff. Some of the “sheep” even became lasting contacts, having become friends with their “sheepdog”.
Term 5: Internal Security (1265-1268)
Being based in one place for so long meant that I got to spend time in one pub in the evenings. It was there that I met a lovely woman who seemed to care about who I was not what I did. By various devices, she was never on-the-radar for work.
Anya was clever, but never really paid attention at school – so end up working bars and then running one.
Term 6: Internal Security (1269-1272)
The Agency became involved in a coup on Whaiaro. The Imperium’s favoured new government is destroyed in a counter-coup. It was a complete mess. There was a lot of back-stabbing (literal and metaphorical) as a result. Anya was always there as the person to come home to.
Part of that operation put me in contact with the TAS (a lot of meetings with members) and I managed to get elected into that organisation
I moved out of Internal Security and into something as innocuous as I can think of…Working with the Poor for the Community of Peace.
Term 7: Community of Peace (1273-1276)
The Community of Peace is a hard-working, “apolitical” group that is tolerated by the Empire because of the socially-pacifying, socially-cohesive nature of its work. After all, “Religion is the opiate of the masses”. This change of pace (and change of name) allowed me to survive the post-Whaiaro clean-up.
Anya followed – she was Pregnant when we moved.
This was the period when I got to know Monte Smith. As a Quid-pro-quo for project funding, Monty was introduced at the TAS.
Term 8: Now (1277-Current)
