Foix replies "Our primary objective is halting the cruiser so we plant the charges first. We then search for and evacuate any persons on board. Since they appear trapped and in unknown numbers our default plan is to have them abandon the cruiser and await pick up from our small craft. When we have done what we can we set a time delay on the charges, exfiltrate the cruiser and evade its attention as we fly away".

He adds with a cheerful smile "Madame Captain, after triggering four nukes with the aim of causing a ship's spinal mount to become unstable upon firing I have no intention of lingering aboard to assess either the damage or the radiation levels".

Cmdr. Taheri

copied/edited from main thread

She has been observing the back and forth, and is realizing that the gathered crew and passengers, with a few exceptions, haven't a clue. And too many cooks are indeed spoiling the broth.

Meeting this warship head on, or in a conventional manner is not advisable. Do we have some rough schematics of this class of ship? There may be a more subtle method of disabling it. Every ship has at least one weakness. I know this, since I was often in charge of making the in-flight repairs.*

Note: character knows much more about Traveller Naval ship construction and tactics than player does.

Anne Dubois
(Cpt, SCN, retired, tactical and engineering specialist)

Anne nods at the commander

"The ship is centuries old, and we've just identified it as Telonqi. It's worth looking in the ships records, but it's unlikely we have schematics. The information we have from Lefron's data bursts do provide useful systems information in general." Anne looks thoughtful "We could draft something rough from that. All the information I've decoded is available to any that want it. There is still data to go through, hopefully that will provide even more useful information. "

The comms officer perks up as a message comes in through her headset. "Comte, Sublieutenant LeFron is hailing us, and asking for you specifically."

"As you know, the Navy won't be able to respond for another forty-seven hours," LeFron begins without preamble. "The last shot we took was too close for comfort, and we are seriously damaged, and down to only enough reaction mass to reach the outpost. We have two people aboard the cruiser. They used our launch to access one of the cruiser's portside hangar doors. I am not confident that I can dodge the next meson gun shot." She pauses for a few heartbeats. "Can you make a boarding attempt?"

Anne Dubois
(Cpt, SCN, retired, tactical & engineering specialist)

While Foix is on comms Anne discretely runs a search on her hand computer. She seems surprised when it pops up a result, which doesn't take her very long to read.

She waits for Foix to finish his communication with LeFron before speaking. "Sir, I did find something useful in the records" with a flick of her finger she sends it to the room screen:
Telonqi Imperial Navy "Hawton"-class Frontier Cruiser: 50Ktons displacement, 5-parsec jump range, 2g accel. Armaments: 20Gj meson spinal mount, 12 144Mj N-PAW bays, 100 120Mj laser turrets, 50 missile barbettes. Defenses: sandcasters, dampers, meson screen. Crew: 406
Notes: Configuration varies from ship to ship - 3600dT of modular bays and accommodations for up to 210 passengers allowed for a wide range of mission loadouts. 47 known to have been laid down, 7 were reported lost over their 92-year history. Length: 250m, 18 decks in most configurations.

Foix, Legionnaire General (Leader, Tactician, Soldier).

Foix replies "Thank you, Captain Dubois, please find us whatever detail you can of the interior layout".*

He waves the comms officer over with a gesture that invites discretion and lowers his voice "Would you please raise the Lady Kuryakhina via tight beam and inform her that I have need of her services?"

Turning to Vee with a glimmer of what might be mischief in his eye he says "My Knight, would you work up options on flight plans? I believe we must approach the cruiser through the "tunnel" that, I presume, she has battered through the asteroid cloud or, instead, wait on the edge of the cloud nearest us for her to emerge. Either way we take her from behind. You must please forgive a soldier's ignorance of naval terms here - I believe "up the baffles" was your expression?"

(OOC: For GM : Absolutely not requesting deckplans here! ;) Just some assumed prior knowledge of interior layout to apply only as and when it may prove advantageous).

Anne sees that the cruiser's data entry only contains the summary and the redacted hull image. She might be able to interpolate some details from the general specifications, though.
OOG: I use TNE's FFS, but the other Traveller ship creation rulesets will get you in the ballpark on how she might be laid out.

Fevre nods respectfully. "On it, Sir." She turns her attention to her datapad.

Vee nods. "This asteroid cloud is considered very dense, but they are still many miles apart. So, she's not really clearing a path as much as presenting a somewhat larger target. We can easily move up behind her with some judicious lookout for any stray rocks that are large enough to hurt us. We are all in more or less the same orbit, so there isn't a lot of velocity difference to worry about. I would still approach from the rear, or the baffles - I have no idea about that term - since there are fewer sensors pointed that way. Normally, the maneuver drive's plasma trail presents a problem to sensors, too, but she's not accelerating."

Smythe sits up a bit straighter. "Should I take the ship further out to drop you off, or continue in company with the rescue pinnacle?"

Cmdr. Taheri

She reads the data on the monitors.

That thing is massive. A crew of 406, and 18 decks. And it seems to be running on autopilot, or nearly so. Even a skeleton crew could be more than 100 people. The more we know about the inside, the easier it is to stop it.

Would Taheri have any knowledge of the ship's layout, from her service days? Maybe in a "history of ship production" class, relating to repairs. Info like where is the bridge, location of weaponry, etc.

Anne Dubos
(Cpt, SCN, retired, tactical & engineering specialist)

Anne nods at Foix and turns to Taheri "My guess is that the AI currently controlling the ship was retro-fitted. Commander, I would certainly appreciate your assistance with the layout. I'm sure that between the two of use, the limited data we have and some educated guesswork we can came up with some likely scenarios"

While Anne's engineering knowledge is extensive (3), I see her as more theoretical than practical at this point. Although she has done practical work in her early career

Generally speaking, warships are designed with the vitals buried deep in the hull, with fuel tanks and other spaces arranged to absorb damage. A ship this size would rate a separate CIC or aux bridge, and an extensive damage control network. The large meson gun's muzzle is open to space to aid in cooling, and is covered with armored shutters when it's not firing. The hardpoints and bay weapons are usually arranged in groups around the hull, and the armor is typically sloped to increase its effect. Another factor is fuel. A quick calculation yields that 30% of the ship's volume would be fuel for a five-parsec jump, plus whatever bunkerage she allocated for maneuvering fuel/mass. Her drives and machinery would take another 12-15% of her volume. The rest is weapons, cargo, and then the habitable spaces.

Anne pauses, looks at Vee, Foix, Captain Smythe and back to Vee "Just call me Anne, or Ms Dubois if we need to be formal." she then glances at Taheri "Hmm, I need to get out of old habits myself, I'm new to this retirement lark." she smiles "Captain Smythe should be the only one using that title on his ship, we don't want any confusion in the current situation. The rear overtaking manoeuvre is usually optimal, and there is nothing in the scans we have to indicate a better option. I just hope we get lucky and don't end up having to cut through the hull. Captain Smythe, I'm certainly not throwing aspersions on the competence of your crew, but we ought to consider running some checks on the pinnacle to ensure her RF signature is as low as possible"

"Yes, Sir," the officer replies. She listens for a moment. "Comte, Lady Kuryakhina is available. I can patch her into the room's system, unless this is a private conversation."

Josephine's concentration is shattered with the ship's alarm klaxon. She had been deep into the delicate and temperamental calculations of her research, her mind holding an entire genetic algorithm, and nudging it carefully into the proper shape... or the theoretically proper shape in any case. Her intuition of a critical connection was flaring bright as the Founder's day fireworks during her childhood.

It's all gone in an instant, the entire thing washed out of her mind by sound nearly as irksome as her would-be brother in law's dramatic bombast. The mere thought of the hours of reconstruction work that she would require, assuming she found that particular thread again of the thousands of possible variants... She didn't wish to think on it.

Somehow managing not to dash her computer to the floor in a fit of pique, she hurriedly writes as much as she could remember about the particular construct, praying it will be enough to rediscover it when her environment is less distracting. By the divine, did they really have to have that damn alarm running the entire time?

She looks at the data she had managed to capture, profoundly dissatisfied with it. Then she glances at the door of her cabin wondering just what trouble Foix had gotten them into now. Only a short time traveling with him and her prime observation was the trouble he seemed to attract called the randomness of the universe itself into question. "The man is so theatrical, he manages to turn existence itself into rather torrid play." She mutters to herself.

Josephine considers her options. Naturally she wants to understand whatever the nature of the current predicament was but she has little doubt that the General had already taken charge, and she has, until now, done her level best to avoid him and his paramour as much as possible. This, of course, proved challenging on a small ship, but there was work to do anyway. Even so, the walls of her cabin often seemed to be closing in on her.
A polite but firm knock at the portal to Josephine's cabin. The steward, when cleared, entered. He was sweating, and flustered, but doing his job. "Ma'am, to keep you informed. We are still in battle conditions, and request that you remain in your cabin. Captain Smythe will keep us informed, and please let me know if you have any needs."
Josephine jumps at the knock and does her best to quell her racing heart as she nods her acknowledgement at the steward.

She tries to stay in the cabin but the more she waits the more agitated she becomes. She paces and wrings her hands. Finally she mutters a swear that would have appalled her mother and sighs. "You are right yet again, Maman. I cannot abide the... the not knowing." She steels herself and makes her way out into the corridor and toward the bridge.

She is unsurprised at the gathering of people there. Between ex-military officers and noble-born passengers they are all used to being in charge, or at least deferred to. Foix certainly looks to be in his element. Miss Becker too, right at his side. Josephine does her best to not call attention to herself, lurking just inside the hatch, instead listening and watching to get the gist of the current situation, and as much specific data as possible. Boarding an AI controlled warship? Josephine mutters under her breath in her own dialect. It's another of those curses Maman would disapprove of.
