Re: Visions of Futures Past (Our Stories in Art)
I guess it depends on what you classify as SF but I always liked the art on the PERN novels and the Wheel of Time novels.

Re: Visions of Futures Past (Our Stories in Art)
Here are some that really captured my imagination as an impressionable kiddo.
Regarding the first two, obviously I assumed one to be a sequel of the other: it takes the next letter of the alphabet, and it made me wonder what happened that the man goes from looking longingly at the the galaxy from afar to hurtling toward its center in distress.

I know the series never stopped and their Anne's kids got in on it. I read the original three.GreyWolfVT wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 10:04 pm I guess it depends on what you classify as SF but I always liked the art on the PERN novels and the Wheel of Time novels.
I've never tackled the Wheel of Time series. So thick and so many.
Starbeard I'm a big Bradbury fan too, and even more so Silverbeg. I like the naming pattern of those Lando novels.
Re: Visions of Futures Past (Our Stories in Art)
I only read the first 3 Pern novels and it was a long time ago. I have read the wheel of time a couple of times, good stuff.

Those authors and awesome book/mag covers and artists are very much on my favorites as well.
I ran a character here in multiple (short lived) SF games. Isaac C. Heinlein of the Double Mind, injecting lots of classic SF into more modern settings.
Ender's Game has done much to bring SF to younger audiences and into school reading lists. Orson Scott Card is the one author who my kids both like and have actually read, starting with Ender's Game and kept on going.

Re: Visions of Futures Past (Our Stories in Art)
For Anne McCaffery I always thought the titles
"Get off the Unicorn" and "To Ride Pegasus" were fantastic. And "Restoree" was a good story - if sad. And the Menolly stories.
And these were what filled my weekends at the library
Truely rubbish but fun.
However, I quite liked the Gate of Ivory (Sorry no picture) and its mix of technology and something else not quite magic.

Re: Visions of Futures Past (Our Stories in Art)
I've never read Perry Rhodan, though he was quite popular it seems in UK and Europe?
I had forgotten how popular Pern and Anne's dragons are. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised about mutiple players wanting the world. I read the first three books. In light of interest, I was curious and read a "Get to Know You" biography on Anne (a short YA book but informative). It had some interesting pictures:
From the Montclair, NJ newspaper after Anne's first published story.

Anyone recall Stewart Cowley's images for 2000-2100?
Or Angus McKie?

Re: Visions of Futures Past (Our Stories in Art)
I haven't heard of those artists, but I recognize the first of those paintings.
It seems each decade has a "look" to its genre art. I like the 1970s look at lot, but also the trippy and abstract 60's (Richard Powers) and quaintness of the 50's (Ed Emschweiller, Wally Wood).
Some other of my favorite artists in no particular order are Brothers Hildebrandt, Frank Kelly Freas, Frazetta, Darrell K. Sweet, Boris, Virgil Finlay, Michael Whelan, Keith Parkinson, Vincent de Fate and a bunch of pulp-era cover artists whose names I don't recall but recognize when I see it.
I too recognize that cover of The Time Machine, for its morloks and eloi. I enjoyed the original film; the more recent remake was fun to. Time travel is such a rich vein in SF>

great pictures for sure. I recognize several but couldn't have told you the artist. Sci fi and fantasy have some interesting art for sure.

I loved reading the book. The movies were good too. Even the futurama versionish episode wasn't terrible.

Rereading the Lensman series...My weren't the 1930's stories simplistic!

Re: Visions of Futures Past (Our Stories in Art)
I haven't read too much of 1930s SF. I occasionally dip into an Asimov-edited "Before the Golden Age" anthology. They are clunky and of their time, but I imagine for readers than it was quite "out there."
