Listening Towards The Trail
Waterday, 24th of Goodmonth
Late Morning, Hot, Humid, Buggy

It takes a good deal of time and even more effort, but Jaxsen is eventually able to travel through the jungle far enough to where he stops hearing the distant noises.

Daring another trek towards the trail, he doesn't see anyone around, and can just barely hear the chopping a good distance away, back towards the mine.

Action?

Jaxsen Reiter

Jax takes a little longer, both to take another drink of water and to take a second, careful look around to check for any sentries that might be nearby. Once, and only once, he is sure he is alone, he moves out onto the edge of the trail and begins to move quickly once more. He doesn't move at his full speed, allowing himself a chance to listen for any noises ahead of him, but sets a pace the armored Dwarves will not be able to match without their mounts. He keeps his eyes and ears peeled for trouble, his only mission now returning to Beachtown.

Jaxsen makes it to the trail and is elated when he doesn't hear or see anything of the dwarves anymore.

He starts making his way back towards the loggers trail, listening for any sign of danger ahead as he jogs along the edge of the path.

After about an hour, his lack of sleep from the night before starts to catch up with him. Can I get a Con check, please?

As he catches his breath, he starts to hear something coming towards him in the direction he is traveling. It sounds like more lizards headed his way.

Jaxsen Reiter

Jaxsen quickly dodges off the trail and back into the foliage. He goes about ten feet and drops low into the cover.

Almost happy for the chance to take another break, the nearly exhausted Jaxsen slips back into the jungle to await the oncoming threat.

The noise of heavy trampling continues to get louder and louder, confirming that it must be more lizards headed his way.

Jaxsen Reiter

Jaxsen hears the words he heard most often at his temple. "Patience, young grub." He hears those words in the voices of numerous masters over the many years of his upbringing. The words ring through his mind in his own voice now. "Just be patient, grub." He thinks. "Let them pass. Stay low, stay hidden." And he follows the advice of both his masters and their pupil.

His patience paying off, Jaxsen eventually sees another patrol of 6 mounted dwarves on huge green lizards begin passing his position off the side of the trail.

This patrol looks the same as the ones he has seen the day before.

There is no talk amongst the riders.

Jaxsen Reiter

Jaxsen waits until the sound of the lizards is very faint. Then he allows another ten minutes for another patrol to be heard. If nothing else comes along, he gets back out on the trail and moves out once again. He still doesn't make his best time, but continues to allow himself to listen for anything approaching. I'm thinking about 12" of his 17" movement rate.

Remembering the standing stones at the junction, and the rumors that they might be some kind of warning devices for the Dwarves, Jaxsen decides to get back off the trail about 1/4 mile from the junction and make a loop around the stones, in the direction of Beachtown. He hopes this will get him back to the Logger's Trail safely.

Once he is certain that the patrol has passed, the wise monk waits a little longer.

When no more noises are heard, he gets back to business, hustling his way to town to report what he found.

He passes the same landmarks along the trail, and then cuts back into the jungle well before reaching the merge where he thinks the dwarven sentries might still be stationed.

During his slow slog detouring back to the loggers trail, he hears something strange coming from the trees above him. The noise sounds like some strange form of chirping speech, but the young human has definitely never heard anything like it before.

Jaxsen Reiter

Knowing that a lot of the things in the jungle are of the "Kill First, Then Eat, Then Talk" variety, Jaxsen spares a look upward. He stays ready to run, if necessary, but is curious to see what might want to communicate with him.

The chirping noise stops when Jaxsen looks upwards, and all he can see above him are leaves, branches, ferns, bugs, thorns, and vines, just like most places in the jungle.

Then the monk notices that the natural din of the wild is muted somewhat in this area.

Jaxsen Reiter

Suspecting that he is actually approaching danger, Jaxsen stops and backs up a bit, to the point where he first heard the chirping, before stopping again. He becomes as completely silent as he can and both listens and looks for any sign of danger.

Moving away, back to where he once was, Jaxsen notices that the normal noises of the jungle are more prevalent here.

Jaxsen Reiter

Jaxsen considers some good advice he got recently, and looks up again, looking for something in particular.

How thick are the trees here? If Jaxsen got up 25 or 30 feet, is the canopy dense enough to allow moving through it? Not swinging like Tarzan, but just climbing from one to another. (I went with 25-30' because that seemed about right to me. If higher or lower would be better, Jax is considering those options, too.)

Though this entire area is dense with vegetation, a lot of it is comprised of massive ferns and other bushy plants that grow closer to the ground. There aren't enough trees that grow to the same size or that are positioned close enough together to allow a steady mode of brachiation.

Jaxsen Reiter

Investigating the route over the area, Jaxsen allows himself a bit of a scowl. "OK," he thinks. "If the ant can't climb over an obstacle, he goes around it." He decides to base the level of threat to himself on what he has noted already: The ambient noise level. He'll start moving to his right in a wide semi-circular path, listening carefully to the jungle sounds around him. If the noise decreases, he backs up a bit and moves further to the right, and hopefully, further from the threat. Fear of drawing the threat to himself, as well as wanting to hear the jungle's noise, makes him move slowly and stealthily once more.

Jaxsen Reiter

Still cautious, Jaxsen sits in the deep foliage, carefully watching and listening for anything approaching on the Logger's trail. Once again, he gives the exercise a full ten minutes. Once he is as sure as he can be that he is alone, he steps out onto the trail and begins what he hopes is the final leg of his trip. As he did on the mine trail, he sets a good pace, but not one that will prevent his listening and watching around him. (Again, about 12" of his 17" movement) He also finds that the slower pace allows him to conserve a little of his flagging energy.

Jaxsen Reiter

Once again, Jaxsen is grateful to the Masters that taught him caution. He quickly ducks back into the foliage once again, giving himself fifteen or twenty feet to get deep enough into the greenery to hide. He ducks and hides, quiet and unmoving, waiting for the newest patrol to pass. Went in a little deeper because I'm guessing the foliage along the larger trail is a bit sparser?
