Rusty weapons are not needed but a shiny horn could always come in useful. I will take it off the corpse and continue on to the ruin.
Just a short DM “thumb on the scale” note ... The two LG Keepers will arrive at the ruins in about an hour. I didn’t want the players to get bored DOING NOTHING until the NG and CG Characters resolved their issues with the Patrol encounter. So I threw in the Horn as a “McGuffin”. If you blow it, some monsters will come and the Paladin and Cleric can fight them. So you have the option of just waiting for the NG thread to finish the encounter and then you will “arrive”, or you can kill some time killing a random encounter. Your choice.

Bogarde

Wouldn't blow the horn to announce our presence. But as he nears the ruin he will discuss with Edralt the plan of action regarding our progress.

Why are we going to the ruin exactly? What we hope to achieve and what plans we have in place to deal with different variables. ie: the place is empty or occupied by trollkin or (as is the case though we don't know it) occupied by potential friendly forces.

Discuss with the paladin our next plan of action and options to assess nearby villages.

I will let the Characters and Players work out the details of their plan, but the BROAD GOAL of your mission is to reestablish the ruin as a forward outpost of the KEEPERS to spy on the Evil Civilization, and from which to launch "guerilla" operations against Evil targets of opportunity. The assumption is you will use the resources in the secret basement area and recruit Good Sympathizers from the population to equip for action. A Paladin can detect "Evil Agents" and a Priest has access to Divine Powers ... that should aid the work of rebuilding an Outpost of Good in the Wilderness.

"I sense we are nearing our goal. Let us press on."

He leaves the field of bones behind, jerking the horse into a quicker trot through the remains of the forest.

Introducing a new Human Fighter … with no name yet. ;)

Year 1153, Day 107: 1:00 PM [Forest SE of Ruins]

“Maybe this wasn’t such a great idea” thought the Lone Fighter as he fought to survive. It had seemed like a good idea when he followed that Priest and his escorts into the woods.

“No, it was a good idea.” he though as he remembered killing the Priest. The fool had left his guards to pray alone to his dark masters and never even saw the blow that removed his head and forever silenced his filthy mumbling. The lone fighter had seen too many children sacrificed by priests like this one to not know that his death was worth any price. His death had saved thousands of children.

“Die treacherous scum!” screamed the mace wielding Bodyguard.

“Not today.” thought the lone fighter as he blocked the attack and kicked the guard away to gain room to maneuver.

After killing the Priest, you had thought you had lost his bodyguards. Who knew these animals would track you day and night without sleep. Captured while sleeping, exhausted after days and nights of travel without rest … that was the only way they COULD have taken you so easily. Stripped of your armor and weapon, hands bound like a common thief, they were leading you back to the Temple to be punished.

Where were those smug looks now. You had wiped those looks off their face when you slipped out of your ropes and reclaimed your weapon. You wiped those smug looks off their face when you killed two of them before they even had a chance to attack you.

“We should have killed you when we had the chance.” said one of them.

“You won’t get out of here alive.” said another as the four remaining guards formed a wide circle around you. They were cautious to approach, but determined to offer you no route of escape.

“Funny, I was thinking the exact same thing about all of you.” thought the lone fighter. “I should have killed you when I had the chance and none of you are leaving here alive”

Year 1153, Day 107: 1:04 PM [Forest SE of Ruins]

[round 4]
“Lone Fighter” has no damage, is wearing no armor and is facing 4 Guards.
The Guards have no armor (they were sleeping) and are fighting with Horseman’s maces [1D6] and Shields [AC 9]. Two are wounded and two are not wounded (2 more are dead and wearing armor).

Edralt and Bogarde were traveling through the woods and nearing their destination when they heard the unmistakable clang of clashing arms from the forest. There was a fight raging on nearby.

Bogarde

I guess riding on by unseen is more unconscionable than pragmatic.

"Hark the sound of blade upon blade and blade into blood." says the half-orc. He winces, reacting to the nearby incident could prove costly in reaching the goal unhindered. But in all good conscience he is prompted to at least investigate.

"Let us hope it is only the cat that curiosity kills," he whispers to Edralt and unslinging his bow, creeps forward unmounted to view the ongoing fight from some close cover.

What I would like to determine among the obvious '4 v 1' fight is if I can pick out any signs or marks of allegiance. So do the shields bear heraldry of Lawful ideals or families, the voices curse calling on particular duties to aid them? Any of the 'guards' trollkin?

Establishing the 'good vs evil' sides he very ineptly fires a couple of arrows high into the trees over the heads of the shield bearers.

Bogarde. Longbow at short range. [1d20] = 1 [1d6] = 5 2nd arrow [1d20] = 3 [1d6] = 5

The Shields of the human guards are of the Priesthood of Molech … a Demon worshiped by sacrificing infants and children in a fire that burns in the stomach of its statues.

Just as well … ranged attacks into Melee have equal chances of striking any combatant.

Fergle

Surrounded, fighter's eyes shift from one person to the next. He remains calm and confident even under this dire situation. He grins having faced death many times before in his childhood You may kill me, but not before I kill more of you. Who's first! Gripping his sword tightly he waits for the first to attack Just then arrows fly over head. He immediately thrusts his sword forward at the abdomen of the one in front of him holding a shield, now momentary distracted. Aggghhhhh!

[1d20+2]{1d8+3] longsword attack to hit and damage respectively: [1d20+2] = 16+2 = 18 [1d8+3] = 3+3 = 6

Year 1153, Day 107: 1:04 PM [Forest SE of Ruins]

[round 4]
Arrows flew overhead and one of the guards stood a moment in stunned surprise at the sword thrust through his chest. His mouth opened to speak, but all that came out was a trickle of blood. Then he collapsed in a heap on the ground.

The two guards to Fergie’s left and right shifted positions to maintain the encirclement as the guard to your rear rushed forward to land a solid blow from behind. Fergie was winded but quickly recovered. When the adrenaline wore off, you were going to feel that.
Update for:
Fergle ‘Fergie’ McGregor (human): AC 10 (none); Move 12”; FIGHTER 2; hp 24; #AT 1; D8+3 (long sword), THACO 17; ST 18.62, IN 8, WS 10, DX 10, CN 16, CH 10; AL CG.
Guard 1 hit with a 19 for 5 points of damage. Fergie's Current HP = 19 out of 24.

Year 1153, Day 107: 1:05 PM [Forest SE of Ruins]

[round 5]
The guard behind Fergie raised his shield and adopted a defensive posture (AC 8 for this round), as the two guards to the front left and front right attacked with maces. Fergie nearly dodged the attack from the left and almost blocked the attack from the right, but both managed to land light but effective blows.
Guards won initiative. Guard 1 defended only; Guard 2 hit with 16 for 4 points; Guard 3 hit with 18 for 2 points. Fergie's Current HP = 13 out of 24.
Fergie, Edralt & Bogarde may attack. If Edralt & Bogarde attack from behind, ignore shields (AC 10).

Fergie

The fighter's knees slightly buckle from the blow from behind. He winces, then quickly gains his senses again, spinning on his heals 180 degrees and slashing at his attacker.

[1d20+2][1d8+3] [1d20+2] = 1+2 = 3 [1d8+3] = 5+3 = 8 fumblllllllle!!! :o

Bogarde

Drops his bow and motions to the paladin Edralt, "Shall we even the odds?" It is a statement more than a question as the half-orc moves from the cover and swings the halberd in a wide arc above his head.

Bogarde: halberd melee [1d20+1] = 5+1 = 6 dam [1d10+3] = 3+3 = 6

"Come filth, your god awaits to greet you. May the vengeance of St Cuthbert ease your passing." he says to the nearest shieldbearer.

Year 1153, Day 107: 1:05 PM [Forest SE of Ruins]

[round 5]
Fergie spun and slashed at Guard 1, but the skilled defender countered with a shield rush that allowed him to knock the sword from the warrior’s hand. Bogarde and Edralt charged in to engage Guards 2 and 3. The Guards lack of armor made them vulnerable, but it also made them quick enough to evade your attacks. With three on three, now it was a more even battle.
Edralt rolled 8 ‘to hit’ and missed.

Year 1153, Day 107: 1:06 PM [Forest SE of Ruins]

[round 6]
The Good heroes formed a protective circle, each covering the back and flanks of his companion as the Guards cautiously circled, looking for an opening.

Edralt feigned a shield rush on Guard 3, but merely knocked the Guard’s shield out of position enough to stab him in the shoulder. Guard 3 dropped the shield and his left arm hung limp and bleeding at his side. A feeble counterattack by the guard had no chance of success and was effortlessly avoided by Edralt.
Edralt rolled a 16 to hit; damage = 4.
Guard 3 rolled a 4 to hit

Bogarde took advantage of the reach of his longer weapon to strike first at Guard 2.

Fergie had retrieved his blade and still held initiative in the attack against Guard 1.

Bogarde

Aims to run through the cultist guard with the pointy bit of his halberd but just ends up bypassing him like a thick bull in the matador's arena impaling a nearby trunk instead of a torso.

Bogarde: halberd melee [1d20+1] = 3+1 = 4 dam [1d10+3] = 8+3 = 11

Fergie

The fighter quickly retrieves his blade. Seeing now that he has help a surge of adrenaline flows through the fighter's body. He lunges forward, holding the sword with both hands, and slashes the blade towards the the guards right shoulder.

Year 1153, Day 107: 1:06 PM [Forest SE of Ruins]

[round 6]
Guard 1 had sensed the tide of battle turn. They had lost their numerical advantage against this more skillful assassin. He raised his weapon and prayed to Molech for the strength to avenge his Priest. As if in answer to his prayer, Fergie landed a blow under his right arm that cut across his chest until it exited under his left arm.

The feral grin was still on the face of Guard 1 as he fell in two pieces at your feet.

Bogarde missed with a thrust and Guard 2 landed a blow with a mace that was harmlessly bounced off your armor.

The guards and heroes formed two lines, facing off and in no hurry to attack. Each side waited for an opening. Finally, the three heroes found an opening and attacked Guard 2 and Guard 3.

Fergie

The fighter eyes bore into guard 2 while raising his sword high and then swinging with the intent to cleave his foe. As he does so his right foot slips a bit on loose soil underneath him whoa!, causing his sword not to hit its target.

to hit and damage rolls respectively: [1d20+2] = 7+2 = 9 [1d8+3] = 8+3 = 11
