Oghma

#1 Post by The Bindoner »

TravellerWiki: https://wiki.travellerrpg.com/Oghma_(world)
World Culture
The Oghman Clans are a barbaric culture of raiders who have reduced the nearby worlds of Marduk (2120) and Borite (2219) to pre-spaceflight technology levels through theft of equipment and enslavement of scientists and scholars.
The rulers of Oghma intend to conquer their neighbouring worlds along the Dustbelt by weakening their industrial and technological bases. Over the course of generations, the Oghman raiders have targeted scientists, teachers, engineers and craftsmen in their slaver raids. The Oghmans are savage xenophobes ruled by tribal warrior-kings, where a warrior’s worth is determined by how many jump-capable ships he ‘rides’ and how many soldiers he commands. Oghman Raiders are a common threat in Sindal subsector; they are despised by all civilised worlds.

The people of Oghma are barbarian raiders who despoil their neighbours

The people of Oghma are proud warriors, descendants of those who survived the Star Dragon's Wrath, and by carrying the fight to his vassals have kept the Dragon Emperor in chains.

The people of Oghma enslave anyone who can read.

Those who cannot fight must work. Those who do not work for Oghma work against it. A worker taken from the enemy is a double blow, for it strengthens Oghma while weakening the foe.

Thousands of years ago the Sindalian Empire thought they had bombed Oghma back into the stone Age.

They were wrong.

Oghma persists, the Sindalian Empire is a legend.

Lord Hallsteinn Ásgeirr is a successful Warlord. In his late 40's he still leads raiders on the soil of the prey-worlds. He is not fully trusted or respected by the other Warlords however. He is not considered to respect the traditions of Oghma sufficiently. Despite that he is too powerful to shun, especially as he controls "dark Jump" fuel depots that link Raider Fleet to the more distant clusters. He has a Great Hall and Ship-Field at the Great Starport of Oghma, a place of honour.

Some blame this on his wife, Vigdis. She was a Corsair Tech, and an unorthodox one. She learned to fly captured Offworlder ships, from their former crew. Raider Fleet was glad when her children were old enough to require her guidance and she "left space" to run her husband's holdings and raise their family.

Every Slave is fitted with one of these, beside any other items their owner may decide on:

Ship Slave Anklet

A metal ankle band with a bulge to one side. It is often decorative, and marked with the rune of its owner or their ship.

It contains a short-range radio, computer and small shaped charge.

The computer uses the radio to check proximity to the ship it is coded to, or a portable control unit carried by the owner. The range can be set to a distance of up to 1 km, but is usually set to 200 metres or less. The radio transmits the details of the slave, their owner and current location. An Oghma comm will display these details on first encountering an active Anklet. This broadcast can be encrypted, so only comms with an authorisation code can track the wearer.

If the wearer exceeds the set distance from the ship or control unit the anklet delivers an electric shock. After a minute, if it is not back in range another shock is delivered every 30 seconds for 2 minutes, then the charge detonates. The timing and amount of shocks may be adjusted. Some users give a warning shock at low power and then a debilitating shock. There is enough charge for 2d6+2, usually dealt out as 5x 2pt shocks.

The shaped charge is designed to break the ankle, but may cause injury severe enough to cripple the wearer. It is equivalent to a Snub HE round ( 2d6+2 HE/ST )

On the division of spoils from raiding:

The Lord provides ships, and his loyal warriors crew them. Whatever they take belongs to the Lord, but he owes his followers a fair share of the treasure they have won for him.

Typically, the distribution is half to the ship, half to the crew.

The Lord who owns the ship takes 50% and pays to maintain the vessel and tithe to the priesthood out of that.

50% goes to the Raid Leader and Ship Commander, who reward the rest of the crew as they see fit, pay for equipping their followers, and cover any sundry expenses (like food and fuel over and above what was provided at the start of the voyage - this encourages Captains to fill their holds quickly and not stay "at space" raiding too long).

After a profitable raid a good lord will pay bonuses to deserving officers and notable warriors. An Oghman's power is reflected in their generosity to their people.

It is not necessary to return everything looted to Oghma, so long as the value is recorded and the half due is paid.
