Olivia Linderoth

Olivia looks for something to light the fire with from the lantern’s flame.

“Let me light this from your flame”, Olivia says to the lantern carrier. She delicately carries the flame over to the edge of the spilled whisky. As she hears footfalls coming down the stair she lights the alcohol and retreats back to the lantern bearer waiting for his lead down into the darkness.

Once everyone appears to be ready, Piers will lead the way down the stairs holding the lantern high so as to give the most light.

Characters:
  • redwarrior: Hild Gamlidottir (1 / 3)
  • Samwell Turleton: Olivia Linderoth
  • ybn1197: Piers
  • (NPC): Ylves
  • (NPC): Scruffy Northman (prisoner)
  • (NPC): Braided Sailor (prisoner)
  • (NPC): Matted Dwarf (prisoner, unconscious)
  • (NPC): Sigurd
  • redwarrior: Bork OdinKarsson
  • Alethan: Gudmund
  • Alethan: Skardi
Hild heads down the stairs first, carrying the matted dwarf with the aid of the braided sailor. Piers follows closely behind, his lantern lightening the slick, stone stairs as they spiral down, down, down inside the bedrock. Olivia ignites the casks-full of alcohol poured on the wooden stairs leading upward to the room above, then brings up the rear with Ylves and the scruffy northman.

The flames roar, consuming the poured spirits, then eventually igniting the timbers of the stairs and flooring. You hear hissing, sibilant protests above but no longer the sound of boots in pursuit. As you flee down the stone stairs below the cellar, you hear the crashing sound of timbers, knowing the way behind you is now more permanently shut.

The way forward is slow with you all being more exhausted and two of you carrying the dwarf. It takes hours to pick your way down the interminable staircase, scores of steps going on and on without end. Finally the stairway ends at a wide hallway, curving high above you and large enough to organize a sizeable force before sallying forth onto the plains beyond. A steel portcullis seals the mouth, which itself is hidden behind a bend in the cliff face so as to not be readily visible. Mounds of detrius form the nests of several rat colonies inside the gate, but they scurry away at the approach of your lantern and it doesn't take too long for you to clear it and reach the gate. Armed with the locksmith's keys, Piers is able to open the portcullis and lead you to freedom.

It is dusk when you pass out onto the plains, the fields bloodied with corpses who came forth from the Land Gate and were hunted down. You hear the sound of chittering kobolds and hissing drakes still hunting in the near-dark, carefully avoiding them. You pick your way to the forest beyond, eventually finding welcome among a small cluster of northmen who appear to be kin to the scruffy man you've rescued from the cells. They are grateful to you as his rescuers and welcome you at their campfire, allowing you to rest for the night in safety and relative peace. It is approaching midnight when you hear the cracking and groaning of splitting wood and see a large, dead oak tree collapse at a nearby fire circle. Luckily, it doesn't sound like anyone was hurt, but you did hear some child-like screams for a moment.

Everyone add a backpack, waterskin, and 20 days dried rations to your gear!

Roleplay here in this thread for your aftermath of surviving the day, interactions with your fellow survivors, and your epiphanies as you work through your experience and choose classes to level up to Level 1 characters.

If any player (in this group or not) wants to pick up Ylves the locksmith thief or the Scruffy Northman, Braided Sailor, or Matted Dwarf, they're available to become characters. Roll them normally (except for the bits already determined) and start roleplaying them here, first come first served.

When you're done with roleplay here (everyone needs at least one reaction post) and have leveled up, you can move to Chapter 2 appropriately. I'll post that thread shortly.

As Hild looks back over this morning, has it really been less than one day?!, She is done being a stablehand. Nothing wrong with that, but she is destined to right wrongs well on this world, and is determined to earn a seat in Valhalla, and maybe even be given duty as a Shield Maiden, in the next. She feels it in her blood. grasping her father's sword, that she kept for all these years, she now knows why... Hild will be a legend among warriors and protector of the weaker.
