How far away are the bails of hay? The sling is a great idea as long as the hay is within range.

The Cultist troops are gathered at the Gatehouse. You're hiding at the alleyway most directly across from the barracks building which Sigurd has encouraged you to enter, saying you'll find the Sally Port stairs within to head down and out beyond the cliffs. The hay is in the horse yard on the opposite side of the gate. You could easily hit the hay with a bow, perhaps also with a sling, but you'd be shooting over the guards. The other option is to sneak back through the alleys around to the next alleyway to set your distraction (no problem using a sling across the road from there) and then sneaking back through the alleyways again to get where you are now.

Piers looks to those assembled here. "Does anyone have a bow? If not, I think our best option is to use a sling; we can fashion one if need be. A couple of us can sneak back down the alley and maneuver a couple of houses down to get to the stables and launch something to set a fire. A bow would be better as we could fire an arrow from here, but I don't think that is an option."

Olivia Linderoth

Olivia begins ripping a long strip of cloth from her outfit. She unwraps the beeswax she is carrying with her and takes the waxed linen tying it at the center into a protective sheath or pouch. She ties the other two ends of the cloth to the end of her staff.

I agree - I think if we can get around the side of these buildings here we may have a chance at remaining unseen.

Olivia and Piers will sneak back around the building we are standing at. Once close enough to the road, Olivia will light the bees wax and use the makeshift sling to set the stables on fire.

I agree. Olivia is going to wad up some of the waxy honeycomb or other visible flammable substance that can be gummed up into an object that will hold together, light it from another fire in the streets, and attempt to sling it into the hay from a more discrete location with Piers' assistance.

Characters:
  • Alethan: Gudmund (1 / 2)
  • Alethan: Skardi
  • redwarrior: Bork OdinKarsson (2 / 3)
  • redwarrior: Hild Gamlidottir (1 / 3)
  • Samwell Turleton: Olivia Linderoth
  • ybn1197: Piers
  • (NPC): Sigurd and Ylves
Piers and Olvia concoct a plan to create a distraction while Gudmund, Skardi, Bork, Hild, Sigurd, and Ylves hide at the mouth of the alley across from the barracks which Sigurd says will reveal the secret exit from they city.

Olivia tears her clothing, fashioning a staff-sling and converting her wax and linen into an effective flaming projectile. With Piers covering her, they slip back through the alleyways, luckily not attracting any attention from the patrols who still roam them for prey and stragglers. Swinging the ball of flaming wax and sending it flying, it arcs across the street and lands in a large haystack in the dressage yard of the stables. Watching to ensure it begins to catch and smoke, they then hurry back around the way they came to return to the others.

The ruse is successful - as smoke begins billowing up from the mound of hay, a cry of alarm goes up from the cultist guardsmen at the gate, turning the attention of many towards it and away from you. But not all - some remain wary for a trick and the archers atop the wall still have a vantage upon where you must run...

Everyone:
Make a DC 10 Reflex save as the archers shoot off the wall at movement in the street, take [1d6] damage if you fail.
Make a DC 8 luck check, failure means you're engaged with a melee guard. Success means you scoot across aided by the ruse.
If you attack a guard (who is your way or to aid someone else) instead of running into the building, roll and post a standard attack roll for your weapon.

Olivia Linderoth

Olivia sees the billowing clouds of smoke from the hay fire blow into the street in plumes aided by the wind. It doesn't fully obscure the path to the gate but she tries to move in the direction of the shifting clouds keeping low to not breathe in too much of the acrid stuff. She makes her way as quickly as she can across the street to the door and quickly gets inside.

She hears a few archers loose their arrows into the street but only hears the twang of the strings and not the arrows' bite.

The guards don't react to her moving quickly across the street.

Olivia gets to the door and holds it open for others to follow quickly in behind.

This way, quickly...quickly! she urges in hushed tones waving the others on.

Reflex Reflex Saving Throw [1d20-1] = 20-1 = 19, Damage [1d6] = 4, Luck [1d20] = 13

Bork running across the road, feels another arrow jab into him, but he is able to continue on, only to run into a guard. Caught off guard (no pun intended), he lashes out with his dagger. With luck, the guard might laugh to death.

Reflex DC 12 [1d20] = 1 arrows [1d6] = 1
Luck DC 8 [1d20] = 2
Attack [1d20] = 2 Damage [1d6] = 6

Hild rushes across, while all the archers are intent at shooting Bork, arriving across safe and unseen. Seeing Bork in trouble, she lashes out with her staff at the back of the guard's head.

Reflex DC 12 [1d20] = 20 arrows [1d6] = 2
Luck DC 8 [1d20] = 19
Attack [1d20] = 14 Damage [1d6] = 3

Piers scrambles across the street, avoiding both the arrows shot at him and any guards to get in the way.
Piers: Reflex (DC10) [1d20+1] = 14+1 = 15
Piers: Luck (DC8): [1d20+1] = 18+1 = 19

Gudmund, Farmer

Gudmund waits for the exact wrong moment to step out into the street to run as an arrow sinks into his eye the moment he moves into the open. He drops to the ground without making a sound, instantaneous death preventing him from doing so.

Reflex Save (DC10) [1d20+1] = 5+1 = 6
Arrow Damage [1d6] = 2

Gudmund the farmer has expired.

Scardi, Merchant

Scardi scampers out with the rest of the crowd, running for the door. He sees the young farmer drop to the ground instantly, an arrow protruding from his eye. What he WANTS to do is pick up the pace and keep running! But Scardi, forever being Scardi, pauses just briefly, wondering if those nice boots he was eyeing earlier would fit his feet.

He feels some pressure on his chest and looks down to see the fletching of an arrow sticking a mere two inches from it. He quavers on his feet a moment before slowly toppling over backwards. When he lands, his head rolls to the side and he ends up staring at the soles of a well-made pair of boots...

Reflex Save (DC10) [1d20-1] = 9-1 = 8
Arrow Damage [1d6] = 4

Scardi the Merchant is dead.
Dragon foot. Bamboo pole. Little mouse. Tiny boy.

  • ybn1197: Piers
  • (NPC): Ylves
  • (NPC): Sigurd
  • redwarrior: Bork OdinKarsson
  • Alethan: Gudmund
  • Alethan: Skardi
Olivia darts across the road and flings open the oaken door on the other side, Ylves the trusting child hard on her heels and holding an apron string, Hild right behind them. Bork takes a grazing arrow for the second time, but is only slowed by the wound. The snarling hiss of a man-sized dragon-kin erupts as the cultist guard comes out between the buildings and swipes at Bork with his long, curved sword. Hild returns to aid him, smacking the creature with her staff (-3). The creature guts Bork with his sword. The fruit vendor drops his bundle of fruit his finely crafted Pewter Mjolnir and sharp-bladed knife falling from his hands to the dust. "Møt produsenten din!" yells Hild as she cracks the lizard-man in the head, opening his skull.

A rain of arrows comes down then, puncturing Gudmund, Skardi, and Sigurd multiple times over. "Nooooooo!" screams Ylves in anguish as her father colapses in the street with the merchant and farmer. The chicken bwagwawks! as Gudmund falls head over very-fine boots, his pitchfork flying to the side. Skardi dies still cradling his wooden box of semi-honest weights and measures to his chest.

Hild has just enough time to grab the pewter mjolnir necklace, knife, scimitar and sack of fruit before she sprints back into the door and Olivia drops the heavy crossbar in place to hold the oaken door of the guardhouse closed.

Inside the guardhouse by the thin light coming through the shutters, you see a table and chairs and small kitchen area in what is otherwise a spartan recreation room for the guards. Wooden steps lead up to rooms above, a set of stone stairs cut into the bedrock leading downward into the dark below.
