Re: A World Apart (ooc and questions lll)
Hey Scott and Ravenn...
As per the house rules, casters can only move 1" and cast. So Amethu can move behind Garrin this round, and cast next round if you wish.
Loche already rolled the dice to attack with his sling. So I have to go with that. Next round, if he can squeeze into the front line, he may attack with his dagger.
General reminder: A fighting human occupies all of a 5' x 5' space.
Thanks!

No warning about firing into melee this time?
Re: A World Apart (ooc and questions lll)
How many warnings can one DM give?OGRE MAGE wrote:No warning about firing into melee this time?
Loche just came out of his fear-stricken paralysis. I figure he's panicking.

Re: A World Apart (ooc and questions lll)
I was going to say that was only because I didn't know he had that dagger, but since Loche can't get in to attack with the dagger anyway... I might have missed it (or ignored it as it wasn't applicable to me at that moment), but what exactly is your rule on firing into melee? I rolled a 16 and still hit my teammate.Inferno wrote:Loche already rolled the dice to attack with his sling.

It's 1e, by the book. From DMG p. 63:Scott308 wrote:what exactly is your rule on firing into melee? I rolled a 16 and still hit my teammate.
So, launching 1 missile into a group of 4 melee combatants (of approximately equal size) has an equal chance to strike any of them. So I rolled a d4...Likewise, discharge of missiles into an existing melee is easily handled. It is permissible, of course, and the results might not be too incompatible with the desires of the discharging party. Assign probabilities to each participant in the melee or target group according to sheer numbers...
Loche hits: Xuthal? (1), Garrin? (2), Xorzen? (3), Kiri? (4): [1d4] = 3
...resulting in Xorzen. Then your 'to hit' roll and damage roll are applied to the target, Xorzen. The 16 hits him.
I hope that's clear. In short, it's bad to fire missiles into a melee where your friends aren't extremely outnumbered.

This may be a good time to run away if we still can.
The die roller clearly hates us.
I think we need to be at full strength for this powerful adversary.
This feels like a boss monster to me.

I agree. I generally don't advocate running away, but I think we need to at the very least get into a location where more characters can attack the Pharaoh. And you never know- maybe if we leave the tomb, he'll stay there and leave us alone.

Just a friendly reminder: In 1e, if you withdraw from a melee, your opponent gets a free attack on you.

Even if they are still engaged with another opponent?
Re: A World Apart (ooc and questions lll)
You mean one of you is going to stay behind while the others flee?OGRE MAGE wrote:Even if they are still engaged with another opponent?
But seriously, from DMG p. 70:
In other games, I've allowed second rank PCs to swap places with first rank PCs (and avoid the free attack against them), but that isn't the situation here. It looks like there will be no replacement combatants for any that depart.Breaking Off From Melee:
At such time as any creature decides, it can break off the engagement and flee the melee. To do so, however, allows the opponent a free attack or attack routine. This attack is calculated as if it were a rear attack upon a stunned opponent. When this attack is completed, the retiring/fleeing party may move away at full movement rate, and unless the opponent pursues and is able to move at a higher rate of speed, the melee is ended and the situation becomes one of encounter avoidance.

Hey gang,
I'll be away for the holidays, but this seems like a terrible moment to pause the game.
I don't know if one more round will make a difference, but if you can post by tomorrow or Thursday, I can try to get one more DM post out before I go. Thanks.

Run! For love of the Gods, RUN!
With Garrin and Kiri already attacking, at this point Zahra could replace Xorzen, and he could escape without the free attack being made against him.
Fyi, if Xorzen doesn't withdraw, and no one facing Xuthalhotep is killed or knocked unconscious, then Zahra can't squeeze into the combat line.
