Sol wrote:Just to throw out a random question. DM Keehnelf, how do you feel about henchmen? These guys can be useful in lots of ways - carrying treasure, as torchbearers, or even for swinging a sword now and then. Since we're doing OSR and we are 5th level, if hirelings are allowed in this world, I figured we might even have a few by now.

My charisma, on the other hand, could be a limiting factor.

I'd assume, too, that all henchmen ought to be dwarves, but then again, that might not be correct.

Just curious about your take on it,
Sol
A good question--and one I hadn't considered. Here's my answer:

Everyone will get up to one henchman based on their character background--I will work up the details once they're ready to join. The Prologue chapter will allow everyone in the group opportunities to find and recruit (or be recruited by) a potential henchman. Basically you'll get a series of situations and once you take on a henchman, that's the one you've got.

PCs and henchmen will not be replaced unless extraordinary circumstances allow it (like a henchman died or went missing, and then somehow you convinced someone you encounter along the way to join up--going back to town to replace them is not an option).

I like the henchmen idea. We use them in my FtF game to great effect.

I've not ever played with Henchmen, but it really says "Oldschool" to me.

With 16 HP (including a +2 CON bonus!), "go" pretty well describes what he'll do if weapons come anywhere near him. :)

Quick note:

The following need to do significant work on characters to complete them--background, description and gear at least:
Ybn
Rusty

The following need background and description at least:
Zhym

Rusty also needs to post his character sheet in the character sheets thread.

Once this is taken care of, we can begin!

Hi all. As much as I want to make this work, RL is playing havoc I with my time. Two sick children are the bulk of that, though there are other factors as well. Sadly, I'll be sitting this out.

Good luck!

I'm usually horrible at character backgrounds. That's even more the case here, where "rune caster" is the DM's construct.

Fjirn is a dwarf; he's probably short and has a beard. :D

Okay, let me know how you'd like to see him fit into the overall political picture and I'll fill in extra details about his background to ground it more.

He's LN, so I see him as doing whatever rune casters do in the Firedeep clan, then sent on this mission because the King told him to.

Is he honored by the duty or is he just doing it because it's his duty?

There is some satisfaction in being called upon by the King, if it's a recognition of one's talents (as opposed to just being the most expendable). But duty is duty. Some duties are pleasant, some not. Fjirn is reserving judgment so far as to which this is likely to be.

RL has been busy with house hunting and opening a new clinic for the hospital. I will update as soon as I can (hopefully by the end of the day.)

Frankly, I'm a dad also and totally understand this. In parenthood, time is at a premium. To be honest, that's the great advantage of play by post. The time commitment is much less and also it is possible to log in and post when you have a moment - rather than having a commitment for an exact time and place as would be required for a realtime game.

Don't get me wrong - I *love* realtime games! And for that matter, I have always done play-by-post or PBEM gaming even when I had more free time. However, at this time of life, Play by post is the very best fit.

I think the biggest time investment is setting up the character. If Play By Post doesn't work for you now, perhaps it will at a future time. :)

I, personally, try to post something once per day or so. Sometimes I get delayed from posting on weekends. Also, I can't always post at the same time every day. Sometimes it is in the morning. Sometimes in the evening.

Well, anyway, just a little commentary from Unther's player. ;)

Keehnelf, very much enjoyed the intro. Really felt as if I was sitting in a Dwarven Hall! Great atmosphere you're creating here.
