"I'll attempt a more soothing effect on the other one. " says Petra.
"Athriel! Wake up and go find our hostess!"
She starts to sing a soft tune to the creature Ty is not feeding: lullaby vur mel'thurkear. gethrisj ekess vdri moxt suorra
Petra uses Slumber Hex(DC 13). using a hex is a standard action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity. The save to resist a hex is equal to 10 + 1/2 the witch’s level + the witch’s Intelligence modifier.

Marshal will just watch how the others handle this. As he is very certain how he would handle it. But they seem to be taking a rather peaceful bent for it.

Initiative Order
25 - Petra
22 - Ty
13 - Monsters
04 - Marshal
---
00 - Athriel (still stunned), (PM to ybn1197 still not read.)

Round 2
"I'll attempt a more soothing effect," Petra says. "Athriel! Wake up and go find our hostess!" she yells, before quickly switching her tune and breaking into a soft song in the same ancient tongue she used previously. The creature targeted completely ignores the attempt and continues on its destructive ways. "Maybe they're hungry," Ty suggests. He reaches into his pack, grabs the nearest piece of trail ration he can find and tosses it to them, but the offering is simply ignored.

The creatures continue to wreak havoc on the room. The first howls in glee as it picks up another scroll and begins to rip it to shreds, while the second sends the sharp blade of its knife slicing through a candle sitting on the desk.

Marshal resits the urge to put the club he freed to use, and watches while Petra and Ty attempt to diffuse the situation peacefully.

Actions?

Notes
  • Will save vs slumber (13+): [1d20+4]
    (base: 10) + (half level: .5 = 0) + (int: 3) = 13
Slumber wrote:Effect: A witch can cause a creature within 30 feet to fall into a deep, magical sleep, as per the spell sleep. The creature receives a Will save to negate the effect. If the save fails, the creature falls asleep for a number of rounds equal to the witch’s level.
  • I wasn't sure how to determine whether the creatures would be tempted by the food, so I figured another Will save would be appropriate, against a DC of 12.

Rolls
Will save vs slumber (13+): [1d20+4] = 20+4 = 24
Will save to resist food (12+): [1d20+4] = 20+4 = 24 (Damn, these things sure can make their saves!)

As if his connection to the world was suddenly severed and then re-established (unexpected loss of internet connectivity while moving), Athriel shakes his head to clear the cobwebs.

"I don't like the way negotiations are proceeding." Unclasping his heavy mace from his belt, he places himself in-between the creature and the scrolls it continues to rip up. He swings his mace once in an effort to force the creature back, not to hit or injure it. "Bad do... creature. Whatever it is you are."

Marshal gets frustrated by his groups actions or inaction. He reaches out to snatch one of the gremlins up to toss it back into the box, in hopes to lead the others in getting them removed as a threat. But as he reached for it, he seemed rather unlucky hitting his pinkie on the table as he reached, which totally diverted his opportunity to grab at one of the critters.

Initiative Order
25 - Petra
22 - Ty
13 - Monsters
07 - Athriel
04 - Marshal

Round 3
Petra continues to demonstrate an exorbitant amount of patience, singing her sweet song through a smile, only this time a little louder. "Oy, Sheila! We got yer box opened!Ty calls out. "What do ya want us to do with these things?" he says, grabbing his rations and tossing them in the direction of the destructive creatures. The passive attempts of Petra and Ty continue to be unsuccessful, but the one gremlin's resistance to the temptation of food is not nearly as strong.

Chaos ensues as the dog-faced looking gremlins continue to wreak havoc and cause destruction. The scroll-ripping creature abandons those efforts and darts to one of the outer walls, which are lined with bookshelves. There, it begins to empty the books from the top shelf. The other, dagger-wielding beast, continues to carve what look like symbols into the tabletop it has been terrorizing.

Athriel snaps out of his temporary stupor and quickly surveys the situation. "I don't like the way negotiations are proceeding." he says, unclasping his heavy mace from his belt. He moves to intercept the creature that is emptying books off the shelf and waves his mace once in the direction of the creature, causing it step back away from bookcase. Marshal, frustrated at the lack of success with the peaceful efforts, reaches out to grapple the gremlin Athriel just forced away from the wall, but catches his pinkie on the table as he first makes his move to snatch the small pest and allowing the elusive creature a chance to duck out of the way.

, you can feel free to roll your own initiative and post it at the bottom of your next update. If not, we will just stick with my roll.

Will save vs slumber (13+): [1d20+4] = 18+4 = 22 (These things are hex-proofed!)

We can go with my roll but it doesn't change much.
Initiative: [1d20] = 6 + 3

"Why is it exactly that we're aren't using a little more force?" Athriel says to no one in particular. Hefting his mace, he strikes out at the nearest creature intent on knocking it out, but the creature simply takes a side step throwing Athriel's balance off.
Nonlethal Damage, taking a -4 to hit.
To Hit: [1d20-4] = 5-4 = 1 Damage: [1d8] = 4 nonlethal

Out of options, Ty draws his Longsword and attempts to subdue the creature with the knife.

Longsword, subdue [1d20-1] = 11-1 = 10 damage [1d8+2] = 2+2 = 4

Longsword, subdue [1d20-1] = 20-1 = 19 damage [1d8+2] = 5+2 = 7

Marshal knew these things are not friendly and the damage they are doing is only increasing. Marshal groaned and brought up his club to go smack one of the fey. But as he rose to his feet to do a swing he got off-balanced by the chair catching up on his pant leg....

Initiative Order
25 - Petra
22 - Ty
13 - Monsters
09 - Athriel
04 - Marshal

Round 4
Petra, noticing those around her converging on the creatures, heads for the door their hostess disappeared through and calls out to her and the half-elf. Ty draws his longsword and attempts to subdue the creature with the dull side of his blade, but is unable to harm the first gremlin.

The gremlins, now fully aware they are under siege, turn their attentions on the group. The first brandishes its dagger, which looks huge in its hands, and weakly slices at Athriel, managing to strike him with solid precision (lethal damage: -2 and non-lethal damage: -1). The second gremlin, dagger already in its hands from its table-carving efforts, looks to carve a symbol into the flesh of Marshal and, while precise in its attack, is so weak the dwarf barely notices (non-lethal damage: -1).

"Why is it exactly that we're aren't using a little more force?" Athriel asks rhetorically, now irritated at the scratch received seconds earlier. He hefts his mace and strikes out at the creature nearest Ty, intent on knocking it out, but the heavy head of the weapon crashes into a table as the creature side-steps out of harms way. Nearby, Marshal groans and attempts to club one of the gremlins, but the shifty creature causes the dwarf to become unbalanced and he ends up clubbing a bookcase instead.

Actions?

Notes
  1. Updated the initiative roll for Athriel, but it does not affect the order.
  2. I was struggling to find rules to handle subdual attempts, then found this: Is there a way to make someone unconscious without threat of death? and realized the "subdual" damage is now called "non-lethal" damage, which linked to this: Nonlethal Damage.
  3. Botched the damage function in the attack against Athriel by copying-and-pasting the formula which resulted in a long-dash, not recognized by the roller. The actual damage was re-rolled with the critical threat roll, and the critical damage roll was made separately.
  4. Speaking of the attack against Athriel, the creatures have a 3 strength giving them a -4 modifier, which affects their damage. The attack roll was a natural 20, so it automatically hits, and per the rules on 'Critial Hits', the critical damage is a separate roll from the normal damage.
  5. Per the 'Damage' rules, if the result of the damage roll is negative, the attack will still deal 1 point of non-lethal damage.
  6. I wasn't sure how to handle the one negative and one positive damage result? I did a bit of searching and found this: 'On a critical hit, does one double negative modifiers?' In that link, Greenstone Walker wrote: " If you roll 1 and 2 then you do 1 nonlethal and 1 lethal damage," in part of his response, which works for me.

So, in this case, the actual damage roll (result: -2) would deal 1 point of non-lethal damage, and the critical damage roll (result: +2) would deal 2 points of lethal damage.
  7. It's taking a lot of work to actually research and apply all the various rules, but I like them so far!
  8. I really need to go back and start tracking all of these decisions I'm making so I can more easily reference them remain consistent in my rulings going forward.

Rolls
Gremlin #1 vs Ty (1-3) or Athriel (4-6): [1d6] = 6
Gremlin vs Athriel (AC 13): [1d20+3] = 20+3 = 23 [1d2–4] = err (See Note #3, above.)
Gremlin critical threat vs Athriel (AC 13): [1d20+3] = 16+3 = 19, [1d2-4] = 1-4 = -3
Gremlin critical damage vs Athriel: [1d4-2] = 4-2 = 2
Gremlin vs Marshal (AC 16): [1d20+3] = 14+3 = 17, [1d2-4] = 1-4 = -3

"I just remembered we havn't gotten paid yet!" He roars aloud and swings like a batter to smash one of the little critters to goo, hopefully. As he swings and goes wide, smashing a bust on a nearby pedestal he just stopped to sigh, rubbing the thick part of his brow.

Petra calls out to Sheila & Koriah again, without opening the door.
"For the love of the gods! " she says impatiently, taking in the scene, that is now becoming deadly.
She looks for something blunt to use as a club. Perhaps a thick book.

Initiative Order
25 - Petra
22 - Ty
13 - Monsters
09 - Athriel
04 - Marshal

Round 5
"For the love of the gods!" she cries impatiently to Sheila and Koriah through the closed door. Believing she finally hears someone coming, she scans the room and grabs a wooden scroll case off a bookcase shelf to potentially use as a club. Ty again does his best to try and subdue the creature with the flat of his blade, but feels powerless against the creatures.

The gremlins continue their own attacks, sniping awkwardly with their daggers, but seem to have fallen victim to their own bad luck as Athriel and Marshal are able to easily avoid being struck.

Stinging from the cut inflicted upon him, Athriel shouts, "This is going too far!" as he swings his heavy mace at the head of the nearest creature. What he was certain was going to devastating blow actually ends up cracking a shelf in the bookcase instead. "I just remembered we haven't gotten paid yet!" Marshal roars as he swings his club wildly, knocking over a lamp, which was thankfully unlit during the daylight hours. The dwarf sighs and rubs the thick part of his brow in frustration over the difficulty he and the rest of them are having at containing the creatures, or worse.

He motions at Ty. Walking past his own gremlin he moved and flanked the other frustrated figures munchkin opponent. Perhaps a flanking maneuver is all his obviously dulled skills need to squash one of these things. He brought his club down with a soft thump sound. Pulling it away he hoped to see a little grease stain and some little limbs remaining. Hoping his luck had finally changed.

Flanking now. Lets hope this makes a difference.

Club[1d20+2] = 19+2 = 21;[1d20+2] = 18+2 = 20; Damage [2d6+2] = 4+2 = 6

Woohoo!! Roll to confirm Crit. Total Damage to this critter is 14

Confirm[1d20+5] = 13+5 = 18;[1d20+5] = 16+5 = 21; Damage [1d6+2] = 6+2 = 8
