Background: Lakeside Town

#1 Post by Eris »

Located on the southern shore of Dragon Lake near where the Dragon River leaves the lake and heads south, Lakeside is a frontier town with thick walls and armed guards walking the parapets. Pirates, and worse, roam the lake while Orcs, Goblins and again worse infest the hills and woods west of the town. To the east of Lakeside the country is a bit less wild along the road that follows the lakeshore, but not by much. This is very much a "point of light" in a vast wilderness of darkness.

Lakeside Locations & NPC's

#2 Post by Eris »

The Duck's Pond Inn and Tavern - a tavern near the waterfront that caters to sailors, merchants and travelers.
NPC's:
Harry Sill - owner
Lou Sill - Harry's wife and cook at the Inn
Mary Baker - part time server, wife of Tom Baker
Jon - general worker at the tavern

The Main Gate Tavern - the largest and best tavern in Lakeside...and the prices reflect that.

The Broom and Board - a respectable Boarding House.

The Laundry - a small building near the docks where you can get your clothing washed and pressed during the day and a bit of slap and tickle after hours...if you know the secret knock.

The Smithy - is near the Market and is not just where horses are shoed, but also where weapons and armor are repaired and occasionally forged. The Smith and his family are currently grieving the loss of their eldest son...damn adventuring bug!

Leonora's Bath House - directly across the street from The Temple, much to the Priests and Acolytes displeasure, is the bath house. It wouldn't be so bad if it was just bathing that goes on in there, and not the shenanigans' rumored to take place upstairs in that establishment.

Tom's Bakery - the only bakery in Lakeside
NPC's:
Tom Baker - town baker
Mary Baker - his wife
Tom Jr. - their 10 year old son

Fresh Meats - the town butcher shop
NPC's:
John Foster - town butcher
Kell Foster - John's son and assistant

Lakeside Sewing - is a small building at the Lakeside Market which sells and repairs clothing of all kinds. Bespoke items can be commissioned from the two men who run this store, Bob and Halrod.

The Orphanage - a large building housing many orphans from the Lakeside area. The orphans are used as casual labor in several shops and on local farms.
NPC's:
Reverend Olaf Brawn - burly half-orc master of the orphanage. A stern, even cruel, man who religiously follows the precept of "spare the rod, spoil the child." Reverend Olaf
Helga Brawn - Olaf's wife human wife. Helga is as warm and kind to the children as she can be, but is totally under Olaf's thumb and defers to him, in his presence, at least.

A great deal of gossip and rumor has swirled around Lakeside in recent days. The Reverend Brawn is arrested and charged with dark rituals, not to mention selling orphans to Barklings to serve as food! Then there is Helga, she was always a warm kindhearted presence in the lives of the Orphans, at least, that's what everyone thought, now it appears she was a evil witch in disquise! Well, maybe not a witch, just a criminal mastermind that was behind all the organized crime in Lakeside. Just rumors, mind you, but isn't it a fact that she's gone missing and is nowhere to be found? Hum, where's there's smoke there must be a fire! Who is Olga?

The Temple of Light - This is a very large stone temple temple dedicated several gods, the main ones being:
Pelor (god of sun/light/agriculture/time)
Melora (goddess of nature and the sea)
Bahamut (god of justice, protection and nobility)

NPC's:
Jocaster, Prelate of Pelor
Brother Xertses, Speaker for Bahamut
David the Sage, Seeker of Artifacts

Hospitalier Caran - the town's hospital and home of healers. Lakal, goddess of healing and health is worshiped here. This building is an annex of the temple.
NPC's who live and work here:
Brother Lathain
Brother William
Sister Margret
Carilor Zexez - herbalist and student of alchemy

Avandar's Tower - This five story stone tower is the home and workshop of Avandar the Wise.
NPC's:
Avandar the Wise
(10th level Wizard)
is a recluse, seldom leaving his tower, but always on the look out for arcane artifacts.
Quint - Avandar's gnome servant and assistant.

Lakeside Keep - A high walled, secure keep where the Baron and his family live along with the Town Guard. The Baron and his family occupy the upper floors, while the guard and bailiffs are based on the ground floor, it is said that no one wants to go below the Keep where prisoners are kept and certainly not deeper than that!

NPCs:
Captain Larson - Commander of the Town Guard, he is an older man considered vain and somewhat stupid having gotten his position mostly through the influence of his family. Once upon a time, Larson may have been a brave knight, now he's just a grumpy old man.

Sergeant Howard - Second in command of the Town Guard, he has the reputation of being an honest man, not corrupted by graft and bribery like some of the town guards and officials. He is gruff and stern, but has never been unkind to those around him.

Head Bailiff Richard - The representative of the Baron tasked with keeping order inside Lakeside and the area around it. The Guard defend the town from external threats, the Bailiffs deal with crime, like thieves and smugglers, and other internal threats to public order.

The Castle Steward Beatrix - serves under the Baron and deals with the day to day running of his interests in the area.

The High Ridge - is a section of Lakeside where the more respectable residences and businesses are located.

Paul's Goods and Sundries - This is something of a general store where higher end items can be found. It is owned by Jacob Paul.

The Apothecary - is the name of Lakeside's apothecary. It is owned and operated by Simon and Carla Black. Carla is a skilled maker of potions, salves and elixers who seldom leaves her workroom in the back of the shop. Simon runs the shop and deals with customers. He also buys and sells magical items. Although he usually has only minor magical items he is always on the look out for the more exotic and will pay top dollar for items of interest brought in from the many ruins that dot the countryside. He and Carla seem to be doing well.

The High Ridge Inn - located in High Ridge just in from the docks is where traveling merchants stay while in Lakeside. The merchants there take boats up and down the rivers and along the shore of Dragon Lake and often are looking for crew and guards. You will always hear them complaining about pirates out on the lake and bands of goblins and orcs threatening their boats on the rivers...if only the Guild would do something about it!

The Guild Hall - is a large building, part of the Silvervale Manor area. Trade Guilds, including the Merchants Guild, share it among themselves.
