Internal Server Error

I've seen some significant slowdown and internal server error pages this afternoon.

I also noticed around 500 guests for quite a few hours this afternoon.

It seems to have recovered now and the number of guests is dropping right down.

Same thing here. I wasn't sure if one of my posts went through but it appears it did. Seems good now.

Oddly enough, after trying to post the above, I got a 500 error. Once I was able to get back in, the post was already there.

Hitting the "Reload" icon a few times will often, but not always, get the page.

An unsurprisingly a crapton of new spammers attempting to post. Ban hammer activated!

Can the pages that "Guests" can see be limited? It should drop the server load.

I think we can limit the IP addresses. That helped over at DF.
I’m not gonna attempt that though. Maybe Dave or Greg will give it a whirl. :)

Great minds think alike Leitz! ToniXX just blocked those effing Huawei bots as well as the MalX bots. As well as a couple others. Thank goodness.

So I'm not the computer guy (and Dave and Greg very much are) but don't the bots help with searches?
phpBB search isn't the greatest, but the bots help with Google searches of the forum. Since we are mainly PbP it might not be a bad idea to block all bots. But I don't know if it affects anything else negatively.

It's always a trade-off; more bots mean more exposure but a poorer member experience. So far our users seem happy to advertise for us, and word of keyboard is one of the more powerful marketing tools.

I've been reading about the robots.txt file, and wondering if it would be of any use (or if it can even be used on a forum?). Same question about the .htaccess file.

It wouldn't take much to convince me that bots are more trouble than they're worth for this particular site.

I did a Google search on 'How to block Huawei bots' and it came up with some useful info,

If you can understand such techno-blurb.

To me, it is like 'speaking in tongues' for computer buffs, I am still on Windows 95 dinosaur tec.

But maybe it will help. I just wouldn't want malicious nerds to be able to corrupt games and hack into things just for the fun of chaos making.
