002 - Traveling to South Port
Re: 002 - Traveling to South Port
The sharp-eyed ranger steps carefully along the right side of the deck on her way forward. Something catches her attention, a glint of light, maybe? She turns to look to her left, and she spots a low craft with people on it approaching. A quick look in the opposite direction, and she sees another craft closing in!
They are a bowshot away (about 300'), and they are angling in sharply to catch the barge between them.

Amistad: perception check [1d20]=6
As Mirek and Aden get ready to sleep, Aden says, "Good night Mirek", in Thieves' Cant just to see his reaction, if any.
Aden sleeps lightly and keeps his bows strung and handy in case they are needed during the night.

Mirek has his bow laid out as well, strung and ready. His short swords are in a harness but on the deck where he can draw them or don them quickly, as required by circumstances.
Re: 002 - Traveling to South Port
Dree thinks she knows the intent of those two ships and she quickly nocks an arrow saying to Armistad, "We've intruders sailing directly for us." She won't let the arrow fly yet, though she quickly notifies all on deck of the approaching vessels.

Amistad
"Put an arrow or two into that helmsman. We need to slow them down and speed ourselves up." he says to Dree, pointing at the nearest boat.
"To arms." he calls, ringing the bell that may toll people to quarters. More experienced in such attacks he would expect Ustasi to haul up extra sail. If the barge is poled, he suggests the non-combatants get heaving the barge away.
"The longer we keep them from boarding, the better for us."

Mirek jumped to his feet, marshalling his thoughts. As they are not in combat yet, he clips his quiver to his waist, shrugs into his sword harness, and nocks an arrow. As he slept in his studded leather, he is ready to fight.Spearmint wrote: ↑Sun Oct 31, 2021 8:25 pm Amistad

Re: 002 - Traveling to South Port
Aden awakens and sees Mirek preparing for a fight.
"It would have to happen during our rest time!" he grumbles as he sits on the floor and pulls on his boots.
"Any idea how close they are?" he asks as he stands and strings his longbow and puts his quiver of arrows over his shoulder, "I'll use this until they are within 30 feet, then switch to my hand crossbow."
Aden has his hand crossbow tied to his belt with a leather cord so he can drop or switch to it quickly. A case of bolts is attached to the chest of his studded leather like a breastplate, "I'm able to get off shots quicker with the crossbow, but it doesn't have the range of the longbow."
Bounding on deck Aden looks around [Passive Perception: 15], if he sees the approaching craft on either side. Aden will try to determine [Perception check:12+5=17] how far away they are, how many are aboard each craft, what their races are, and how they are armed.
As he is looking at the craft he is nocking an arrow and calling out, "How many bowmen have we? Half go port and the other half go starboard!"
Others might note with interest that Aden seems to have left his short sword back in the cabin

Round One
Aden happens to glance forward - and he spots a third raft dead ahead, and only sixty feet away, headed straight for them! Even in the cloud-filtered moonlight, he can see that there are four large humanoids aboard, and he spots moonlight glinting off the swords in the closest persons' hands. An arrow whizzes by his head and barely misses Dree's right shoulder as it passes outboard of her.
The other rafts are still over two hundred feet away, angling in to catch the barge. It's quickly evident to Amistad that they're falling behind, and there is no way that a poled raft will ever catch the barge under sail. They are still within archery range, and an arrow hisses in from each barge. The one from the right sails harmlessly overhead, and the shaft from the left thunks solidly into the hull and bounces off, falling in the water.

Looks like he'll be going toward the end. If he saw the front boat, one of the large humanoids will be his target.

Round One
Aden calls out, "Boat dead ahead, 60 feet away and closing fast!"
[Initiative: 16+4=20]
When it is Aden's turn, he will attempt to move to the bow and fire his long bow [To Hit: 15+8=23, Damage: 5+4=9] at the large humanoid in the forward boat that appears to be using a bow!
What rate is this boat closing? Aden wants to switch to his hand crossbow when they get within 30', as he'll get two attacks per round from his Crossbow Expert feat.

Amistad
He has hold of a long barge pole and punts the water studying the approaching craft. He takes a javelin and throws it as it nears, aiming for the figure at the front of the vessel.
Amistad: initiative roll [1d20+3]=11+3=14
Amistad: throws javelin [1d20+5]=13+5=18 [1d6+2]=1+2=3
I want to check for next round as I have a reckless barbarian idea. That is to use the bargepole as a pole vault and run across the barge, put the barge into the reef bed and leap the 20ft gap to crash into the other figures on their boat and cause some mayhem. How feasible is that?

Re: 002 - Traveling to South Port
The quartet fires on the rapidly approaching raft, and all four of them hit the largest enemy, now visible as either an orc, or a half-orc. He staggers back a step, and then topples overboard, dropping his scimitar in the water. The rest of the raft's occupants belatedly realize that the barge is about to run them down. The four hundred-pound raft is a poor match for a fifty-ton barge, but the occupants are somewhat fortunate that the bows sweep them down the left side of the barge, rather than running them over. Even so, two of the occupants are thrown overboard by the collision.Darithe wrote: ↑Tue Nov 02, 2021 3:38 pm Dree aims for the helmsman and fires her bow.

Round 2
Dree and Aden see a half-orc struggling in the water as the barge charges past. He is desperately trying to unbuckle his armor to avoid drowning.
Meanwhile, Amistad and Mirek watch the raft scrape it's way down the barge's left side, with a human man struggling to climb back aboard from where the collision had dumped him into the water. A half-orc, clad in skins and a leather cuirass and wielding a rusty broadsword, nimbly leaps aboard the barge and turns to challenge Amistad. An orc archer, still aboard the raft, looses on Amistad at just beyond arm's reach. The arrow thuds into his chest armor, but it fails to penetrate the tough, layered leather.
The other two rafts are falling further behind, despite the occupants' frantic paddling to catch up. The archers aboard them shoot again, and a scream from somewhere aft signals at least one person aboard the barge is hit.

Re: 002 - Traveling to South Port
Amistad unlimbers his axe as the orc leaps aboard. Before his assailant can bring his sword up, the barbarian's axe flashes downward in a powerful chopping attack. The blade catches the orc at the junction of his shoulder and his neck, and cleaves him to the top of the sternum. The orc's grip relaxes, his sword clattering to the deck, and he crumples boneless to the deck as dark blood sprays everywhere from his sundered vessels.Spearmint wrote: ↑Tue Nov 02, 2021 5:52 pm Amistad

Please specify that you draw or sheathe a weapon each time. I presumed - this time - that he'd drawn his battleaxe immediately after throwing his javelin.

Round Two
Aden ignores the man in the water and moves along the port side dropping his long bow to the deck as he moves and raising his hand crossbow from his belt.
As his Action he fires on the man with the bow who is in the boat. Not so good!
With his off hand free, Aden (Crossbow Expert Feat) uses his Bonus Action to fire his hand crossbow again at the Orc in the boat off the port side.
Natural 20 on this roll, so I double the 5, so the damage is 10+4=14! Much Better!
OOC: If you don't mind, JR, I'll go back to using dndbeyond.com to make the rolls.

Mirek is further forward than Amistad, and the barbarian cleaves the boarder immediately after he sets foot on the barge, leaving Mirek to dodge a fountain of blood from the attacker's neck. The orc archer aboard the raft, which is moving rapidly aft as the barge passes it by, grabs his chest as a crossbow bolt appears to sprout from it. He drops his bow and falls flat on his back.
