Sector Information

#1 Post by Marullus »

This is where IC information about our corner of the universe goes. (Players are encouraged to capture things revealed in-play for later reference and also to add facts established in their character's backstories.)

Anyone who has access to functioning databases has seen the map of Sector Canippe Rho. Little to nothing is updated since the Scream, however.

You can access the Player View of the sector here. I will make more information available in that map as characters discover and verify it.

Your grandparents lived in a better world, a better life. The Scream that broke the universe is fresh, the wounds still new. The collapse on this planet was incredibly swift - the instant death of the psychic-dependent government, the succession wars, the bombs - the first 15 years killed 80% of the people. It is the New Earth we dwell in now, we ragged children of a fallen world. The leavings of our ancestors sustain us; with each generation, it grows harder. Each year we have less. But this world is ours. Our ancestors ruled here, our fathers and mothers lived and dreamed and died upon its earth. Our children will never know anyone with any memory of the Before. What will we leave them? What legends endure?
  • Most of the planet is Badlands, small towns and clusters of people living at a TL2 level of existence. Some cities endure, maintaining a TL3 level with wifi reaching the city limits and radio broadcasts reaching the surrounding territories. TL4 goods still exist, valued and treasured, for as long as they last until they break down.
  • The contents of bombs dropped throughout the Succession Wars have radically changed the environment. Radiation, bio-weapons, and nanoparticles have blighted and changed swaths of the countryside, slaying, stunting, or mutating life therein. It is harder to eke a living from the soil, and only hard people live outside the cities where monstrous creatures now make their domains.
  • The weapons of mass destruction killed the planetary population so fast that even 50 years on some places remain secured and untouched. "Reclamation" is a key business, those willing to brave the Badlands selling high-tech finds to those in the city desperate to keep their tech functioning.
  • The moon, Oenon, still glows in the night sky and the two orbital space stations still pass by like moving stars. Glendore station is whispered of softly by the cityfolk, a utopia where everything still functions, but only welcoming of those elite/rich enough to be worthy. Langtang station cut all communication 30 years ago and all reclaimers who tried to go to it have not returned.
  • Spacecraft are rare on Earth-9, but not non-existent. Like all advanced tech they dwindle year by year, but there are still a number of known captains keeping their ships flying, even a rare few who have claimed to attempt spike drills out of Chloea System. Most captains know their knowledge is power, and they keep quiet on what still exists elsewhere. The real problem, they say, is that Earth-9 doesn't give them much of a reason to visit.

Order of Saint Chrysostom
Origin Tradition: Eastern Orthodox Christianity
Leadership: Patriarchal/Matriarchal - A single leader determines doctrine for the entire religion, possibly in consultation with other clerics.
Evolution: Sacrifices - The faith finds it necessary to make substantial sacrifices to please God. Some faiths may go so far as to offer human sacrifices, while others insist on huge tithes offered to the building of religious edifices.

And then a heresy based on this religion.
Founder: High Prelate - Founded by an important and powerful cleric to convey his or her beliefs.
Major Heresy: Stringency - The sect believes that even minor sins should be punished, and major sins should be capital crimes.
Attitude Towards Orthodoxy: Filial - The sect honours and respects the orthodox faith, but feels it is substantially in error.
Quirk: Must donate labour or tithe money to the sect

So, it looks like the already bloodthirsty Church we broke off from just wasn't ruthless enough for someone close to one of our characters, so they founded their own branch that still respects the original faith but goes the extra mile to punish wrongdoing. Honestly, that sounds like a pretty workable belief structure for someone who hunts 'evil' shadows. I think I'll develop this idea a little more and go with it.
The Eastern Orthodox church is a primary religion on Earth-9, popular with both the Greek and Russian cultures which predominate. The Order of Saint Chrysostom, led by its High Prelate, has established and spread its evangelical truths in the Badlands, the primary church silent and allowing leeway outside of the city populations.

High Prelate Evangelos Teresides, facing the rise of darkness in the Badlands of Earth-9, has inspired an order of militant exorcists who have spread out throughout the lands of Greater Kumekhna. The towns offer tribute to the Priests, tithing ten percent of their laborers each season to build the new domed cathedral outside the city of Deluga and live lives of hushed oppression lest they be punished for their sins. The fear of the Dark Ones is greater, though, and the power of the Prelate to route-out and eradicate the evil forces in the Badlands is proven. The holiness of his priests is respected and those without sin know they have no fear from them and the fear of sinners is righteous.

Initial stub is that the psychic leaders went mad, starting inter-regional wars, the non-psychic leaders both had to have civil wars to wrest control and also fight with each other for dominance. The end result was complete collapse of the world government, 80% of all populations dead through pretty effective mutually-assured destruction (MAD) measures, most of the planet turned into Badlands, and a stalemate that led to regionalization of power in a fractured city-state system.

Details below that are open for players. Feel free to color in by creating your characters, backgrounds, and goals. If you specify an important NPC, group, or place in your goals, a culture in your background, etc, that will make it exist and result in a post here. For example, defining a religious group as Eastern Orthodox to be the background of the preacher resulted in defining Greater Kumekhna as one of the regions, Greek and Russian as predominant social groups with Eastern Orthodox as core culture, a sub-group of more radical exorcists needed to fight Shadow cults in the Bladlands, an NPC leader of that group, and Deluga as a core city for that Order. I am open to players developing as much of this type of thing as they like and I'll expand at my option. The fractured, regional world supports multiple cultures and norms on the planet so all players can have freedom.

The Terran Mandate
The interstellar government which made possible the jump gates to reach from sector to sector, facilitated terraforming and colonization, and maintained the connect from Core Earth to all the planets of the universe. Also assumed to be responsible for the Scream, which collapsed and ended it all. With the sundering of the jump gates as a first-order effect of the Scream, local Mandate officials were left without any unification or order, quickly becoming subsumed by the planetary governments they were stranded with. Even so, mandate standards and technology remain the standards of the universe, from which each collapsing world now digresses.

Exchange of Light
The interstellar bankers of the universe-before, these Buddhist brokers were highly dependent on both psychic capability and the most advanced technology to keep their records and systems aligned across systems, sectors, and even further beyond. They were one of the first institutions to go dark, collapsing utterly almost immediately with the Scream. With their collapse, digital currency and the stability that underpinned it dissappeared as well and the fortunes of entire planets, corporations, and virtually all oligarchs went with it. This mass crash of the commerce system was a triggering event for the cascading failure of governmental systems on a myriad of worlds.

The Perimeter
An interstellar enforcement arm of the Mandate government charged with protecting from threats against humanity itself by circumscribing and eliminating any evidence of Maltech: technology that enslaves the human race, destroys habitable planets, or creates unbraked artificial intelligence (which will ultimately do one of the other two). Unlike the clean and dramatic end of visible Mandate and Exchange presence, nobody really knew where the Perimeter's Agents were anyway, they being either clandestine or covert. With the abrupt end of the Mandate, it is assumed the Perimeter Agents collapsed as well, bereft of authority, support, or funding.

Order of Prestation
Arising out of the planet Partana in the Nacimne system, the Prestationers worked tirelessly as esteemed advisors and purveyors of power who helped create authoritarian and oppressive systems throughout Sector Canippe Rho. Their homeworld was a teeming penal colony, hosting their elite caste of psychic overseers and one of the sector's most advanced psychic academies. Their axis of planets grew in power until their combined military might threatened the sovereignty of the rest of the sector. Their first strike was at the Brotherhood of Phe roughly 200 years ago, in an event that came to be known as the Day of Everlasting Mourning (also known as the Day of Pain by the Prestatons), where a million of the Brotherhood clerics and the people they were helping were slaughtered. The Mystic Knights of the Chun Kuk emerged from the remains of the formerly peaceful monks of the Brotherhood of Phe, created to be the response to the Prestatons. The resistance to the Prestationers solidified throughout the sector, and within 50 years their network of planets was broken. They remained confined to their homeworld - still elite but now as imprisoned as the rest - until all contact was lost during the Scream.

The Mystic Knights of the Chun Kuk
An order of legendary gunslinger-monks founded in response to the Day of Everlasting Mourning two centuries before the Scream. Their Knights were instrumental to breaking authoritarian regimes across the sector, after which they settled into a benevolent protector role against oppression, largely disappearing from view and being resigned to legend.
Mystic Order monasteries were established in remote locations on several planets, where individual knights were trained in two main skills: diplomacy and war. Legends abound but actual sightings were very rare. Most legends speak of "one planet, one Knight" where a single knight would be sent to a planet where injustice had arisen. There is a saying: "if a Knight has come to your world, it's worse than you thought, but about to get better." Also, "if a Knight invites parley, be thankful." Knights pray twice daily, with evening prayer involving cleaning their weapon. They eat meat when possible, and are known for hunting game: the fresher the better. Their main virtues to which they strive to meet are justice, courage, and even-handedness.
