Action Thread (Year 1153, Day 107) CHAOTIC GOOD

Year 1153, Day 107: 10:20 AM [Deep Forest NW of Ruins]

Grakluse Longleaf’s ears perked at the sound.

You had been walking along the main road for days searching for some mischief to get into … an opportunity for a little payback. All of the encounters had been too neutral to bother attacking, or too large to directly confront. Then you arrived at the fork in the road and the sound of chopping from the abandoned side branch. Checking the crude map scribbled on an old piece of paper, that path was supposed to be a relic from before the War … yet someone was down there and chopping away.

Blending into the forest, you followed the old ruts to a narrow freshly cut path. Then carefully working your way along the freshly cut path, you heard the guttural sound of pigeon-Common coming from the throat of some Trollkin. You pressed only close enough to catch a glimpse and discovered some sort of Patrol in matching tunics. Three large, hairy Trollkin towered above three normal humans. All wore leather armor and seemed determined to cut a path through the forest along the ancient road.

Perhaps opportunity had finally knocked. For now, you just let them do the hard work of cutting a path and you quietly followed from a distance. An opportunity would present itself and you would be ready when it did.

The humans are wearing matching armor and carrying light crossbows. The Trollkin are armed with Axes and a Morning Star.

Year 1153, Day 107: 11:20 AM [Edge of Forest NW of Ruins]

Grakluse Longleaf had been sensing the gradual change in the forest for a while. The Patrol seemed to feel it, too. As the forest thinned of nasty underbrush, the Trollkin became quieter and more nervous. The Elf stopped abruptly.

The forest suddenly ended and a vast meadow lush with green grass and wildflowers in bloom spread out before you. In the center of the meadow, a ruin of some sort rose above the surrounding grass. The Trollkin were walking towards the ruin, however with each step closer they seemed to move ever slower and glance around a lot more. Something made them nervous. Unfortunately for the Elf, that meant that you needed to just wait and watch from the edge of the forest if you didn’t want to be seen by the now hyper-alert Patrol.

So you waited until they were further away and then began to follow in a crouch … allowing the waves rolling through the grass to hide you and guide your rate of movement.

Year 1153, Day 107: 11:25 AM [Meadow NW of Ruins]

At 800 yards away, Grakluse Longleaf can see nothing inside the ruins. However, as he tracked the Trollkin, he was able to spot what appeared to be a flight of hawks alight from the ruins. They were presently circling the sky above you.

For some inexplicable reason, perhaps it was some genetic memory, the sight and thought of hawks circling overhead filled the Elf with a warm calm … almost as if they were watching over him, like in the stories of the ancient days when Elves and Hawks lived together in the forests.

Grakluse will look to see if they are trying to cut there to the ruins or if they are tracking something.

Year 1153, Day 107: 11:35 AM [Meadow NW of Ruins]

Grakluse peaked up from his hiding spot in the tall grass to get a better look at the Trollkin Patrol. Having hacked their way through the dense forest to reopen the ancient road, now they were following parallel to the old ruts, hiding in the tall grass.

The elf chuckled silently to himself. The Trollkin had spotted the hawks as well and as calm as they made you, that was how nervous those same hawks seemed to make these Trollkin and Humans. From the way they kept looking around as if they expected an imminent ambush from every direction at once, it might have been more than the hawks that made them uncomfortable.

The old road that they the Patrol was following appeared to be leading to the ruins and the Trollkin Patrol continued to remain hidden in the grass and just in sight of the old road. You were all headed to the ruins, apparently.

Year 1153, Day 107: 12:10 PM [Gate to Ruins]
The Trollkin Patrol had stealthily followed the old road to the ruin and were approaching the moat and drawbridge with great care. They clearly had some sort of formal military training. They approached from due south and had just broken cover of the tall grass into the remains of the old road, keeping low and to the shadows as much as possible.

[Round 1]
In the blink of an eye, Grakluse saw the first of the Human Crossbowmen disappear in a flash of green. The man didn’t even have time to scream as he was immediately dragged into the grass on the other side and torn in two and swallowed by a pair of giant frogs fighting over his body. The third Human Crossbowman was being slowly dragged across the road by the thick tongue and towards the open mouth of another giant frog, when a fourth frog leapt a bowshot’s length to snap its jaw on the man’s arm. The second (middle) Human Crossbowman was struggling against yet another tongue as the two Battleaxe Trollkin fought to hold onto him and fend off yet another Giant Frog. The Morningstar Trollkin unit leader chased after the first Human and struck the Giant Frog as it bit him in half. The heavy spiked ball barely broke the thick Frog hide.
