Then There Was One
Go Time! Round 28
Evening, Partly Cloudy, Warm

Thamansa springs to the ladder and begins to climb, knowing that she must stop this traitorous Xyxax from hurting any more of her group. When she gets to the top of the ladder, she finds that the hatch must be barred rom above. No matter for her now with her new super strength. She starts bashing away at the wooden trap door while hanging on to the ladder with her other arm. It takes a little doing, but the door is eventually in small enough pieces for her to rip it the rest of the way out of its frame so she can climb up into the dark room above. She hears a muffled explosion coming from somewhere outside the tower walls and a murmuring of human laughter coming from somewhere in the dark room she is about to enter.

Ondrake roars from the top of his massive tower, quite sure he is now the king of this entire castle. When he moves to the north to smush a few more of the lowly humans below, he sees a tiny pebble of fire shooting towards him from the middle window of the central mages tower. The pea sized fireball races towards him until it gets directly in front of his hideous face, then it erupts with a force unlike anything the giant has felt before. With his thick skin now burnt entirely from his massive body, the very last sensation he ever experiences is the smell of fatty meat cooking over an open fire. The huge hill giant is reduced to a large burnt hunk of dead flesh in mere seconds and dies in a stupor right there on the top of the tower. 49 dam  :? X's Fireball [6d6] = 20 + [6d6] = 29

Pressure's on!

Thamansa takes a moment and prepares Stinking Cloud. Then she peeks above the trapdoor. If she spots Xyxax, she gases him. grabs another furball out of her back of tricks and throws it through the trapdoor. Then, take a moment to prepare Stinking Cloud, or, as she thinks of it, the Devil God of Flatulence, and peek through the trapdoor. If she spots Xyxax, she gases him.

Bag of Tricks: [1d24] = 4
4. Skunk (AC 9 ; HD 1/2 ; hp 2 ; Dmg. Musk )!!! Thematically appropriate!

Man, you got hosed on those rolls too. A rat, a skunk, and an ostrich out of all those sweet choices? You guys must be Irish monsters.

Tossing a ball of black and white fur from her magic sack up into the room above, Thamansa starts to think about the words she needs to utter to bring forth a devastating cloud of putrid smoke to envelop the blue mage.

Sticking her head above the floor of the next level of this tower, the gangly bugbear sees what must be the wizards private chambers. There is bedroom furniture spread throughout the entire floor and along most of the walls. This floor is not separated into two equal rooms, like the last 2 were, but there is an access hole in the ceiling, just like the one on the floor below. A tall wooden ladder is resting against the wall under the ceiling hole to allow access to the floor above. There are no stairs or other doors to contend with in this room.

The witch scans the area with her dark vision, but the only living things she sees in the room is a bird in a distant cage and her friend the skunk looking around on the floor, desperately searching for something to attack. Can I get a save vs. Spells with your next action, please?

Thamansa approaches the caged bird, cautiously, her new pokin' stick held out in front of her. "Polecat," she whispers to the skunk, "If'n anything but me makes a move, blast it, right?"

Then There Was One
Go Time! Round 30
Evening, Partly Cloudy, Warm

The black and white polecat sniffs around for something to attack, eyeing up the same birdcage that Thamansa makes her way across the floor towards. Once she gets there, she sees a fat old cockatoo swinging on his perch.

"Aawwkk! Hello! Aawwkk! Ernie is a pretty bird! Aawwkk! Pretty bird!"

A feint sound of the wizards murmuring is coming from the open hole in the ceiling above when Thamansa suddenly falls into a fit of shivering and shaking. Something inside this room has frightened her so badly that all she can think of to do is to run away, but all she can actually do is to shade her eyes and cower. This lonely bird cant be that scary, can it? (I'm not really sure what things you can get away with under the effects of a Scare spell, but hey.......lets find out together.)

Eyes bulging, nostrils flared, fur standing on end, Thamansa crouches, frozen in fear. That demon bird! Why is she so afraid of it? Taking one bony finger, she bites down on it hard until the pain clarifies her thinking, like she did as a child just learning to master her emotions.

Okay, this has to be magic. Maybe it is the bird, or its cage, or maybe the wizard targeting her from above. Well, just in case, she grabs the birds cage and dumps it down either the trap door or out a window, whichever seems like it will fit through. Then, whether the fear abates or not, she coaxes the skunk back into her bag of tricks, pulls out another furball, whispers, "Gut that rotting wizard" to it, and tosses it through the hole to the next floor. She is prepared to scramble up the ladder once she hears whatever distraction results.

Bag of Tricks: [1d24] = 24
24. Tiger (AC 6 ; HD 5+5 ; hp 30 ; Dmg. 1d4+1/1d4+1/1d10——2d4/2d4 )

Yes! At last!

The effect of the Scare will last 7 rounds. Luckily, it takes just about that much time to do everything you mentioned in your post. (the skunk was being very stubborn) ;)

Despite biting on her finger till it bleeds, Thamansa just cant shake the fear of going after the wizard. She can however be a nuisance in other ways. She goes for the cage at the same time as the skunk, grabbing it before it gets knocked over.

"Aawwkk! Ernie Likes Cookies! Aawwkk! Ernie Is A Pretty Bird! Aawwkk!"

She takes the cage to the hole in the floor and drops it in. "Aawwkk! Ernie Likes AAAAAAAAWWWWWWWKKKKKKKK!!!!" The frightened bugbear gets a small amount of pleasure from dropping the bird to its death as the cage bounces and careens off walls and floors on the way down, eventually ending with a loud crash. The bird doesn't squawk again.

Then she turns her attention to the skunk rooting around on the floor, looking for something to attack. It takes a while to corner it and convince it to get back in the sack, but she eventually wins that battle as well. She can hear more chanting from above, but continues on with her plan all the same, scared to face the man, but not scared enough to run away herself, knowing the wealth of magic she stands to gain by killing such a powerful human.

Reaching into her filthy magic bag again, she pulls out a ball of orange fur this time and tosses it up through the hole with a sly smirk. The carnage she hears from above is enough to snap her out of her fear completely. Sounds from her tiger ripping and biting into something above, roaring out loud as several tiny voices all shriek in fear, is all the witch needs to hear to leap for the ladder and begin climbing.

Just before she reaches the top third of the ladder, her gangly hands grasp onto a rung that is covered in some kind of slimy grease. She climbs a few more rungs and realizes that the entire top third of this ladder is slathered with the funky slime. (I will need a [3d6] Dex check (dex or lower) if she wants to keep climbing. Then I will need another Save vs. Spells from her please)

The sounds of her tiger ripping apart its screaming victims urges her on. She hears curses and shouts of retreat in the goblin tongue, but is still too far below the top of the hole to witness the mauling for herself.

Action!

Thamansa grins savagely at the sounds of carnage. "Oh! there's a pretty kitty! Paint the tower red with that wizard's insides!" Then she hears the sound of goblin voices. What in the halls of hell could be going on up there? "Kitty! The wizard! Forget the small fry and get that syphilis stain of a wizard!" she cries as she hurries up the greased rungs.

DEX (12): [3d6] = 13
Oh dear.
Save vs. Spells (12): [1d20] = 5
Oh dear oh dear oh dear.

Ok, I will admit that this game was designed to be difficult for the monsters to succeed, but the rolls you guys got really didn't help your cause at all! Having to wait several rounds for the Scare spell to wear off gave Xyxax enough time to buff up and figure out a plan of attack as well. :x

Then There Were None
No Time! Round 38
Dark and Cold

Thamansa tries to climb up through the opening in the floor despite the greasy conditions on the ladder. This proves to be her downfall.

Using her new strength to pull herself up so she can see what is happening above, Thamansa spots a room that must be used for magical research and spell testing. The wizard Xyxax stands on the far side of the room, amongst tables and desks filled with laboratory equipment and writing materials. He is covered by some strange magical force field that floats in mid air between him and the witch's aggressive tiger. That animal is currently engaged with a small handful of goblins, two of them whom already have their throats ripped out. The 3 remaining goblins are currently between the tiger and the mage, fending off the beast while fighting for their lives, and failing at both.

The mage continues casting, his latest spell aimed right above Thamansa's exposed head. Suddenly an unseen force pushes down hard on the bugbear, still hanging onto the greasy ladder for dear life. The push is enough to break her precarious grip on the slippery rungs, causing poor Thamansa to slide from the ladder and begin falling straight down. She hits the next floor hard and plunges through that hole as well, unable to get a good hold onto anything to stop her fall due to the greasy residue still on her furry hands.

She falls unconscious after hitting the next floor level, dreaming about how she will eventually be queen of the Keep as she looks upon the dead Ernie, still in his cage right next to her bloody head. Then everything fades to black in the horrid witches mind..........forever.

Kermut's body is stripped and tossed from the back tower of the keep into the deep ravine below for the scavengers to devour. Horsefly is dually treated, his body is also stripped of his items and tossed over the wall never to be seen again. The bodies of Othrod, Shozbot, and Ondrake are all burned with the rubble in the aftermath of the destruction. When the guards go to collect the body of the unconscious minotaur, they find that he has somehow run off, his remains no longer anywhere to be found. (His Ring of Regeneration brought him back to consciousness just in time for him to realize that the attack failed, allowing him time to escape back out through the rubble of the collapsed tower unseen. So, no TPK after all.)

The next morning, after the wizard had plenty of time to rest and regain his magic, (which was nearly depleted, by the way) anyone watching the area can see the flying kobold leading a large contingency of orcs and goblins towards the ruined keep. (Loopis flew back to the caves and convinced some of the tribes that the battle was a complete success, tricking them into entering the keep to celebrate with the surviving victors.) With fireballs and ice storms, the wizard kills off most of that group at a distance from the safety of the top of his walls. The tricksy kobold flies back to the kobold caves unscathed, laughing the entire way.

The End!

Thanks for playing along everyone!!! I had a fun time running this one, despite the hardships you had to face as a group. I think this would have gone much better if you were all playing at the same table and could coordinate better, but that is how these things go sometimes.

I hope you enjoyed the game despite the less than stellar outcome. I am happy to hear any feedback about the game, good or bad. Thanks!

But the wicked spirit of the bugbear witch-doctor, Thamansa, lingered in the tower, and clinging to the wizard Xyxax in particular. Whenever the Keep's menu was overly-reliant on beans, or he got a bad piece of pork, at his most private and vulnerable moments on the privy, he'd feel a tickle on the back of his neck, and very nearly hear a voice whispering,

"I'll roll up your soul...

"and use it as a suppository...

"for a runny-gutted troll...

"a runny-gutted troollllll...

"It weren't re-tory-cal...

"after allllllllll..."
